Next, consider CHEATER'S GAME: "One of the best legal thrillers of the year." - Best Thrillers.com
Here's the setup: Jake Lassiter tackles the college admissions scandal, and somebody is going to take a hit. Suffering brain damage from his days as a football player, Lassiter says goodbye to the courtroom...until his nephew Kip desperately needs his help. Kip has been working with millionaire Max Ringle in a shady scheme to help rich, entitled kids gain admission to elite universities. The mastermind of the fraud, Ringle cops a plea to save his own hide and shifts the blame to Kip who’s charged with multiple federal crimes. Dr. Melissa Gold, a famed neurologist, supervises experimental treatments intended to keep the ailing lawyer strong enough for a grueling trial. As a fiery showdown looms with Ringle, Lassiter risks everything – including his own life – to keep his nephew out of prison.
BUM DEAL, BUM LUCK, AND BUM RAP WOW READERS AND CRITICS
In BUM DEAL, Lassiter switches sides and prosecutes a surgeon accused of killing his wife. It's an impossible case with no forensic evidence, no witness, and no body. Even worse: Lassiter's symptoms of C.T.E., the fatal brain disease from his football days, are growing more severe. Upon publication, BUM DEAL soared to Number One on Amazon's "legal thriller" bestseller list.
"A drop-everything, read-it-now book for me - and this one has Solomon & Lord too. BUM DEAL is fantastic.” – Lee Child, #1 Bestselling Author of the “Jack Reacher” series
“BUM DEAL is the real deal. Jake Lassiter at his smart-talking, fast-thinking best. A funny, compelling and canny courtroom thriller.” — Scott Turow, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Fascinating, fully developed characters and smart, well-paced dialogue keep the pages turning. Levine manipulates the expectations of the reader as skillfully as Jake manipulates the expectations of the jury” — Publishers Weekly (★starred review★)
Thirteen of Levine's novels have hit Number One bestseller status on Amazon in their genres, and in June 2015, he was the Number One bestselling author on Amazon Kindle.
Now available in paperback, ebook and audio: BUM LUCK. Here's what Oline H. Cogdill in the Sun-Sentinel had to say: "Paul Levine continues his trademark brisk pacing with timely storytelling and well-placed humor. Lassiter, Solomon and Lord make an unstoppable team — concerned about the law but even more about people."
And this, from Bookreporter: "BUM LUCK is a one-sit, must-read novel full of memorable characters and unforgettable vignettes Put BUM LUCK at the top of your spring reading list.”
Levine is best known for two series of legal thrillers: "Jake Lassiter" and "Solomon vs. Lord." The international bestseller BUM RAP brings together the protagonists of both series in an explosive murder case set on glitzy South Beach.
BUM RAP was a Number One bestseller out of six million books in the Amazon Kindle Store. The setup: Lassiter has had it with sleazy clients, shifty prosecutors, and a legal system out of whack. He's about to hang up his shingle when Victoria Lord calls. Solomon has been arrested for murder. What's worse: the only person who can clear him has disappeared. Now it's up to Lassiter and Lord to track down the witness--a stunning Bar girl--before she's roped in by the feds...or eliminated by the Russian mob.
"The pages fly by and the laughs keep coming in this irresistible South Florida crime romp. A delicious mix of thriller and comic crime caper." - Booklist (★starred review★)
Levine's first novel, TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD, introduced the world to Jake Lassiter, an NFL linebacker turned hard-nosed lawyer. Lassiter has been described by Booklist as "one of the most entertaining series characters in contemporary crime fiction."
Levine's other series features squabbling lawyers - and lovers - Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, who duel in and out of court. The Chicago Sun-Times praised "Solomon vs. Lord" as "remarkably fresh and original with characters you can't help loving and sparkling dialogue that echoes the Hepburn-Tracy screwball comedies. A hilarious, touching and entertaining twist on the legal thriller."
Levine has won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and has been nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award, the Macavity, the International Thriller Writers Award, the Shamus Award, and the James Thurber Humor Prize. A graduate of Penn State and the University of Miami School of Law, he was a trial lawyer before becoming a full-time novelist. He divides his time between Santa Barbara, CA and Miami, FL.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2013After a few books featuring Jake Lassiter, former Miami Dolphin and current lawyer-in-trouble, you have the feeling that you want to know what your old friend is up to these days.
Paul Levine works his magic once again with a lead character you've gotten to know so well and some of the old sidekicks that hang with him. If this seems to suggest that Mortal Sin is a familiar book, rest assured that the only things familiar are the primary and the secondary players. The stories are all new and exciting, but they're played out with a bunch of people you've come to know and whose presence you welcome.
This time, Jake's involved with a client in a civil case (which he wins, by the way). However, a serious side story is that Jake is, uh, involved with the client's wife. Apparently, Jake and the client's wife have had an on-again, off-again relationship for far longer than her husband has been a client. And, as we get into the book, we discover that she's had other side interests as well, which complicates the whole deal.
Meanwhile, Jake's client is now involved in a huge business deal located in the Florida Everglades and some of the characters he has business with are less than stellar folks. Parts of the plot involve defiling the pristine environment of the Everglades and Jake Lassiter finds himself involved in a lot more trouble than he started with in the civil case. And right up front of everything are Jake's relationship with Gina and whoever else she is tangled up with as the story goes on.
Just be ready for another great Paul Levine thriller starring Jake Lassiter. You always know that these books are beautifully crafted and the pages are turned quickly with terrific anticipation. Levine knows South Florida as well as anyone and his descriptions of Miami and the surrounding area are true and exact. Mixed with the suspense and dangerous turns are always a lot of laugh out loud situations and smartass remarks and answers by Jake Lassiter.
This has been an amazing series of books and fortunately for me, there are still a few left to read. I never get tired of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2018I enjoyed tge book and the trailer, but I do not buy books. I am a fixed income and can not afford to buy books. I read too much and don't have the extra money to spend on books. I enjoyedbtge suspence and intrigue. I would recommend this book tonall my friends and will read more of
Paul's books if
and when they are free. Keep writing stories like this. Do you write romance novels? I like suspense novels, but I prefer romance. I don't have anything else to say except keep writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2014I have always enjoyed Paul Levine's novels, but some I've enjoyed more than others. It's not the content to which I'm referring; that has always been great. Great plots, great character development, great twists and turns. However, many Levine Kindle books suffer from poor editing. For example, the one I read immediately prior to Mortal Sin, Night Vision, had no breaks within chapters whatsoever; there were no spaces or wingdings to indicate a change in time or locale. Consequently I rated it 4 stars because of the many times I had to trace the text back to the logical break point before continuing.
But that was a previous book. This one, besides being properly edited, has one of the most compelling story lines of all the Lassiter novels. There's the usual flawed woman leading Jake down paths he'd rather not travel. But one of those paths leads to Jake doing what he has never done before (I won't say exactly what so as not to spoil the surprise for future readers), and the consequences seem irresolvable. How Lassiter works his way out of his predicament speaks volumes about Levine's powers of imagination as well as his ability to persuade the reader to suspend disbelief.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2013This is the second Jake Lassiter book I’ve read, the fourth in the series after reading Fool Me Twice, the sixth. I liked that book enough that I wanted to read more in the series. Not anymore.
The story itself is good. Nicky Florio hires Jake, his wife’s lover, to defend him against a civil suit filed by the widow of an environmental activist who dies during a party at Nicky’s mansion. Jake discovers the sleazy developer has plans to exploit the Everglades for personal gain and knocks those plans awry, earning him Nicky’s hatred.
Not much happens through the first half of this book. Jake goes to court, Jake sleeps with women, Jake talks to people. And he comes across as a clueless jerk easily manipulated by those around him. Then in the last 40% of the book, Jake wakes up, grows a spine, and starts to act like the main character we expect in our books.
Jake’s two muses are his Granny Lassiter and retired ME Charlie Riggs. Both are caricatures, not ‘real’ people. Riggs constantly spouts maxims in Latin and tells us the scientific name of every animal he and Jake encounter. It was cute at first but got tiring very fast. Granny Lassiter is a broadly drawn woman who drinks home-brewed moonshine, smokes two packs of cigarettes every day, and insults Jake regularly.
On the plus side, this e-book wasn’t loaded with the errors that plagued Fool Me Twice.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019Just read Mortal Sin, it was good in some parts , but a
little slow in places. I have read a lot of Paul Lassiter's books. This to me was not one of the best of them. But when there was action it was very good. Not for the sensitive people. Some parts are a little to much for them. Read it and make up your own mind. He is a good writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spannender, gut zu lesender Krimi
