Lux (The Nocte Trilogy Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 550 ratings

LET THERE BE LIGHT.

My name is Calla Price and I’m broken.

My pieces are all around me, floating on the wind, even as I desperately try to grasp them.

Who is dead? Alive? Insane?

What is the truth?

I don’t know.

I do know this: The darkness is strangling me. With every breath, I choke on another lie.

My mind has protected me, but that shield will soon be lowered.

All will be revealed.
Every answer to every question.

It’s all been leading to this.

Don’t be afraid.
Be terrified.

OMG WOW! Just WOW! Upon finishing LUX I had to wait for my body to stop shaking, my heart to stop racing and my mind to settle down before I could even think about writing this review. I LOVE LOVE LOVED this book and this series SO MUCH!!! I want to shout it from the rooftops! (or the cliff-tops perhaps would be more appropriate) I don't even know where to begin other than to say that Courtney Cole has delivered so much awesomeness with the conclusion to this trilogy it just makes me wish I didn't have to leave this crazy mindf&%k of a story! I miss the rabbit hole! I miss the insane twists, turns, flips upside-down and right-side up! I miss everything about the Nocte Trilogy. I even miss the constant updates of the support group - the theories, debates, questions, confusion and chaos! Never have I refreshed my screen so often just to make sure I'm not missing anybody's comments or new theories. So much fun!

As with my reviews for NOCTE and VERUM (which you MUST read prior to this last installment), I will keep this short and I will say NOTHING of the storyline or where it takes you. Other than to say nothing is as it seems and once again Courtney Cole delivers an incredibly well-written, well thought out (or as best as her insane mind can offer us) story that will have you hooked from beginning to end. I had considered doing a re-read of the first two books prior to the release of LUX, but in the end did not have the time and felt confident that I would recall the pertinent information as needed. And this turned out to be exactly true; everything I needed to remember about Calla, Finn, Dare, and all the events affecting their crazy lives, came back to me in a flash. It was as if I'd never left them behind several months earlier. Loved that! I also loved that LUX finally answered so many questions that were floating in my mind, and I will say I am completely satisfied with how this last part of the trilogy unfolded. I think as readers we are provided with just the right amount of reminders of what occurred in the previous books, and we are then offered explanations and new theories to explore. Whether as a reader you choose to believe everything you read is left up to you, something the author has done in a most unique way. Again, loved that too!

Courtney Cole you truly amaze me with your writing talent; you drove me to the very edge of insanity, pushed me off that cliff, allowed me to grab hold of a sane branch for a short time until it broke and I was back in the midst of the craziness, craving more. You have given your readers something uniquely special and wonderful with the NOCTE Trilogy, the insanity and the mindf&&ks are just so worth it. I am a fan for life and cannot wait to see what comes next.

What is truth and what is lies? To what extent are we able to change what comes next and to what extent has it already been decided for us? How much of what Calla is seeing is just her mind messing with her?

As the culmination of the trilogy, Calla finally is able to start to put back the pieces of what is reality and what is her imagination. The reader joins her in climbing through the sticky web of memories, do-overs, dreams, loss, love, and fate.

"Warmth rushes through me because Kismet always prevails. The jury has decided. I feel it in my bones."

Courtney Cole has such a creative mind, and the way she presents the struggles Calla's mind goes through in her writing is rather brilliant. I wouldn't want to have to imagine what it was like to be stuck in Calla's not-so-clearly reality and the murkiness of her mind.

"We’re all prisoners. Prisoners of expectations, prisoners of responsibility, prisoners of life."

I've seen a large variance of opinions on this finale, seemingly polar opposites. Either someone loves it or they hate it. It took me a while to digest it myself. And while it wasn't at all what I expected, some is repetitive from the dreams/experiences Calla has had in the first two books, I thought the twist was interesting enough, compelling enough to be a great ending to this series. Hope you enjoyed it like I did!

I highly recommend you read Initium (book #2.5) prior to Lux. I believe it gives the reader a lot more insight and understanding for what is revealed in Lux.

Dark. Chaotic. Emotional. In the final book in Courtney Cole’s NOCTE Trilogy, you will go on a journey that will take you further down the rabbit hole and have you questioning your own sanity along with Calla’s.

    ***

There are simply no words that I have right now. Well, that is not entirely true, but Courtney Cole has left me beaten, battered, thrown to the left, thrown to the right, and in complete awe of her dark and twisty mind.

The final book in a trilogy that has captivated me since the first page of NOCTE is one that I will not soon forget. It picks up exactly where the last book leaves off. Calla is no closer to figuring everything out as she was before, but she is desperately trying. The reader will see her go through the various events of her life as those that she loves die and come back to life. But is it all in her head? Is she crazy? Is there something more that is going on? Will she be able to see the light at the end of this dark and confusing tunnel? If you honestly think I am going to tell you, then you don’t know me at all. This trilogy is a journey that every reader must take with the characters. You have to experience and feel the emotions that are on the page for yourself. And let me tell you, it is worth it.

What I can talk to you about is the writing. Courtney has a distinctly unique voice in this book (and series). The way that she depicts Calla’s mind is both unnerving and marvelous at the same time. Every time I flipped the page, it was as if I were just as confused or crazy as Calla. I would stop and think for a moment about what just happened and then propose the same question as the character only paragraphs later.

Also, there is an all encompassing element to this series that grabs hold of you and will not let go. As the reader, there is no way that I could put this book down and when I had to, I was constantly thinking about it. I DARE you not to become consumed in this crazy, sometimes macabre, world that is in front of you.

I waited what seemed like forever, for this ending. I wanted so much for it to be everything that I wanted. Fortunately for me (and the rest of you), it was better.

Series Note: Ladies and Gentlemen, you cannot read this or any of the books as a standalone. I know that you are upset about that, but if you read NOCTE, there is no way in hell you are going to stop there. This is a trilogy that is positively addictive. So…buckle up! You are in for quite the ride.

    What to say.

    What to say

    What to say.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Think. Pause. Am I crazy?

Breathe in. Breathe out. Think.Pause. Am I sane?

Most books one reads (yep, I'm playing the English card) have the reader play follow my leader. Lulled into an easy rhythm. The author has control. The reader a mere puppet. The reader an insignificant observer. Impotent.

Few books make the reader choose the conclusion. Maybe because we are weak. We lack imagination. We want the author to hold our hands and spoon feed us the happy, rounded, blissful ending where all of the jigsaw pieces come together. All is right with the world.

If you have ever read The Life of Pi you might recognise that feeling of getting to the end of a book and having to decide on which story is real. Courtney Cole has done that in Nocte, Verum, Initium, Lux. How the story works out - you decide and that my friend, is either the strength or the weakness.

Want to be mollycoddled? Spoonfed? You would hate it.

Want to explore the depths of your mind? Draw your own conclusion? Then I dare you.

Breathe in. Breathe out. Think. Pause. Am I crazy?

Breathe in. Breathe out. Think. Pause. Am I sane?

We all have secrets. The irony isn't lost on me. My head is mush. Save me and I'll save you. I've fallen off that cliff so many times that I really think I can fly.

Thank you CC for allowing my brain to shudder. Waiting was such sweet sorrow but I was there patiently hoping. Patiently waiting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real mind play story

I cannot imagine how Courtney Cole remained sane writing this story. It was fabulous. Though most of the time I had no idea what was going on.

Twists, turns, re-dos, angst, love, loyalty, strength - the reader will find this and so much more in this trilogy.

A brilliant idea for a story, I have not read one like it.

You really should try it, though be warned, it is not for the faint hearted, nor the weak minded.

Well, that series was insane. At times I felt so frustrated because I just wanted to know the answers and eventually everything did make sense. Even though the ending wasn't what I expected I liked it, it was like a fresh start at the beginning. I think everyone in this story, fin, calla and dare was just one mind fracturing and coming back together in different shapes. Yet the shapes made sense. Basically what I'm saying is the series was brilliant yet totally mind blowingly cry out loud annoying. I wouldn't read it again as I really do believe it's one of those one time books but I would definitely buy it again and read it again if I had no idea what was going on.

Well where to start on reviewing this book? Well again it was confusing, had me completely sucked in and asking myself questions all the way trough just like the other books! lol You think it's giving you all the answers but then you carry on reading and find that actually you don't!
The writing again is amazing, one of the best series I've read and completely unique! I went into this hoping I would get all the answers but I should have known from the others that it won't necessarily be the case lol
It does end because it's the end of the series but the way Courtney has written the ending leaves it to the reader and what they think. This is great in one way but I'd also love to just know for certain because of how confused and lost I've felt through the whole series!
This has been a roller coaster of a ride, ups and downs, it's had me frustrated, confused, amazed and so much more! A brilliant series and would highly recommend it!

3.0 out of 5 stars More filler than story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2016
I feel quite disappointed in this trilogy actually. The first book had so much promise despite it waiting until the last few chapters for answers. The second was pointless and, in my opinion, didn't need to be a book. The novella could've been part of the second book and the the third was just constant repetition from other books. It just felt not thought out, the repetition of words over and over annoyed me and I'm left feeling thoroughly disappointed by it all.
