This live set is a fantastic showcase for the talents of each band member and of their collective strength as a band. Although an acoustic performance (well, the keyboard must be electric), you don't even notice. There is nothing subdued about it. The playing is tight, lively, joyous and infectious. The song selection is first rate. Songs whose studio versions were strangled by the overuse of studio effects (for example, "Oh Yeah" from the album This Time) spring to life on this record.

While I have seen Los Lobos live only once (1992, following the release of Kiko), I place that show among the best I've ever seen by anyone. And I've seen some great ones. A friend told me he never really cared for Los Lobos until he saw them live (not at the same show I saw) and: "That show was easily in my top five. Simply amazing!" Live is how they ought to record all their material. For anyone who hasn't seen them, this album will make you a believer. For anyone who has seen them, it will be an excellent reminder. Get this.

Far from a late-career cash grab, this is a worthy companion to the awesomely ear-splitting "Live at the Fillmore" they put out a few years ago.

If you saw "Disconnected" in the title and assumed this would be like Clapton's snooze-inducing stripped-down "Layla," you owe it to yourself to give this a try.

First off: this is one of the loudest albums I've heard in years. Although acoustic guitars replace electric, they're still played with the same aggression and tight interplay that we love about these guys. You can hear the solos being played on the acoustics with the verve of the originals, and it sounds great. Different, but great.

To my ears, it sounds as though the sax has moved up, almost to where it takes the place of the lead guitar on several of the songs. This album actually makes me want to hear more; I particularly wonder how my favorites, "I Walk Alone" and "I Can't Understand" would sound in this style.

What this says to me is that the band isn't ready to be done yet. If they quit today, they'd still be top-twenty all-time, but unlike a lot of their nostalgia-peddling contemporaries, they're still creating new sounds. In fact, the slightest song on the album is the "La Bamba/Good Lovin'" medley, which basically exists to show that whoever wrote the latter um, well, "borrowed" from the former.

At 6.99 for the whole album plus bonus tracks, it's a steal.

I should clarify and say that this is four stars with the potential for five, but I need a little more than a week to see how mas y mas repeated listens play out.

For now, I can say this with certainty: This is the kind of album that's a reminder of just how ridiculously fantastic these guys are and it almost makes you angry that there isn't more mainstream appeal for such amazing musicians that bring you along on their wild journeys between languages and genres. Let the masses go listen to Katy Perry put out the most generic pop possible. So what if the popularity of Nickelback strains US-Canada relations? And who cares that U2 is still regarded as 'the biggest band in the world' despite ceding any real creativity or soul many albums ago?

Granted, I'm biased since I'm a huge fan of Los Lobos, but I submit that this is among the most pleasing albums for people like me who pretty much own everything else they've put out and seen them in concert several times. It's a more condensed look at their body of work than "Just Another Band from East L.A.: A Collection," but it's more unique in that you're not getting the bulk of the songs repackaged from their original albums. Rather, this evokes everything fans love about seeing the band perform which, of course, is expected in a live recording, though I think the recording and feel of it creates a more intimate experience than, say, the "Live at the Fillmore" album. Even though the larger, plugged-in sound of the Fillmore album is more in line with five or so times I've seen Los Lobos at big shows, the musicianship on "Disconnected" instantly felt more relatable to the live experience despite my only seeing a similar acoustic show by them once.

Two particular standouts for me are songs I previously would have said lose everything sans amplification: "Mas y Mas" and "Bertha." The former is always a highlight when they screech into an extended guitar jam so far removed from something like "Sabor a Mi" and not a track I'd immediately peg as translating to an acoustic jam, so it's a treat to hear a new spin that turns into a percussion and sax showcase. As for "Bertha," somehow Los Lobos manages to out-Dead the Dead for me, giving the song a much cleaner, yet more organic sound than the previous versions I've enjoyed from both bands. Part of me hates the idea that a finalist for favorite track from a Los Lobos album might not be one of their own creation, but considering how many tweaks I've heard put into this song (I had a brief stint doing concert security for the Dead in the early 90s), maybe the fact that this one felt so fresh is a testament to the band.

Frankly, I'm not sure why I needed to say anything about this album. If you're a Los Lobos fan, you should make it part of your collection and I doubt that my endorsement is what's going to seal the deal for you. If you're not a Los Lobos fan, I don't know what's wrong with you and doubt I have the power to help unless your curiosity's been piqued and you're looking for guidance. In that case, I'm on the fence as to whether this is where you want to start. I feel like "Just Another Band from East LA" is the better primer, but "Disconnected" is an excellent representation of what the Los Lobos live experience is like these days.

Like I said, a good chance for five stars as time passes.

(Two notes: Beware of buying the "Intro" track a la carte: It's literally 10 seconds of welcoming the band, not music. And c'mon Amazon: Listing this as 'Latin' music is incredibly narrowing and a touch racist. These dudes are more likely to play alongside Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy than Enrique Iglesias. What's next, lumping Arcade Fire in with Celine Dion?)

Forty years and they remain the best at what they do. Unlike many other bands that remain decades later, Los Lobos maintain their great sound and do not just rely on nostalgia to obtain fans and publicity. I once gave one of their cd’s to a friend who was then in college and babysitting for my children. She and her friends became instant fans. Their mixture of rock/folk, Spanish/English, singing/instrumentals makes them available to all listening ears. I know of people who aren’t as big of fans of this group as I am, but I don’t know anyone who can’t listen to them.

As for this recorded live edition, the band demonstrates their vitality and enjoyment as they feed off their fans excitement. This is collection well edited to give a good taste of the band’s various styles.

When I heard Los Lobos were putting out a mainly acoustic set, I was truly excited as they are one of my favourite groups and the opportunity to hear them in a different context was welcome. After hearing the stunning performance , I was even more enamoured of the idea. The musicianship is superb, the sound is impeccable and the selections are a great combination of old favourites and off-the-wall surprises. One sure tip: Get the Amazon exclusive edition which has five extra songs - well worth the small price premium!!!

Los Lobos perform in a more intimate venue than some of the big halls they usually play, to a receptive NY crowd. A lovely, well balanced set of songs & great interaction between the band & audience. Live albums can sometimes be a disappointment, but the combination of musicianship & atmosphere make this collection one worth having
