Editorial Reviews

"Louder" is the debut solo album from Leah Michele, who is best known for the character Rachel Berry on GLEE, for which she has earned two Golden Globe nominations and an Emmy nomination. Of the 43 million singles sold from GLEE, over 10 million of those are Lea Michele songs. Lea is featured as lead singer in over half of the of the Top 20 selling GLEE songs. Now a veteran of Broadway and Television, this album takes Lea fully into the world of popular music. Most of the songs on "Louder" are written by songwriter Sia Furler, recently celebrated on the cover of Billboard in November, 2013.

It came in on time but with a huge scratch. And it was delivered packed nice and sealed in cardboard so it had to be sent already with the scratch on it. Delivery and packaging: good, quality of product: not good

This album is so good, to me. It’s emotional but she sings so beautifully. My faves are “cannonball”, “on my way”, “burn with you” and “you’re mine”

I've been watching Glee since the beginning, and admittedly fell in love with Lea's face and voice since the first minute she was on my screen. I've never held high hopes for those stars who go from a tv show like Glee to doing a solo album. However, LOUDER is... it's amazing. I agree with another reviewer, she's comparable to Celion Dion of this generation, my generation. While I love Celine, Lea... has the sound, and the lyrics are the most powerful and just pull you in. There are three kinds of music: 1) those where the beats, and actual instrumentals sound better, 2) those where the lyrics far outweigh, and 3) those that are coupled perfectly, and they both take you away.

    LOUDER is the latter.

I have to say that 'If You Say So' is my number one. As a huge fan of Cory Monteith, to get a glimpse into their personal relationship, one that meant the world to both of them.. it makes my heart ache for the both of them that they didn't get to have their happily ever after. Cannonball comes in as my second. Even so, Lea has put out a fantastic album in spite of all the hardship she's had to overcome the last year. As one of her biggest fans, I'm so proud to own this album. Physical copy and all.

Lea Michele's "Louder" CD is a strong set. I heard her sing the leadoff track "Cannonball" on TV and immediately preordered the set. "Cannonball" is a stellar pop song that builds with her amazingly strong, expressive vocals, "Freedom, I let go of fear and the peace came quickly." "On My Way" that follows is also another impressive track with a driving beat and great vocals where she goes into the upper register on "to you." "Don't Let Go" is another favorite of mine with its strong pumping beat and feel-good lyric, "Flying high as a kite, no ground below." "You're Mine" is a strong song with Michele's vocals resounding with conviction. The set concludes with two slower songs, "Empty Handed" and the elegy "If You Say So." This is a strong set that tries very hard to be a blockbuster. While a few tracks lack individuality for me, there are enough sparkling moments that make this a very strong debut for this talented singer. Enjoy!

I don't watch Glee but I have run across clips of Glee and enjoy Lea Michele's voice. I enjoyed her debut album very much but, as discussed below, tLea could have done better. The album has too many run of the mill Pop tracks worthy of Katy Perry, which is fine for Katy Perry but someone as talented as Lea Michele can do better. However, on balance the songs ARE good. In fact, there are a few songs that are very good. Lea's voice is lovely and the songs are not vulgar (as a Mom, this is a big plus - the whole family enjoys this album).

    - Cannonball: This track is a catchy pop song. It's not musically outstanding by any means, but it is good. 4 stars because it is enjoyable.
    - On My Way: This track is a Katy Perry caliber pop song (her "hearts too drunk to drive". The song is not musically outstanding, but enjoyable. 3.5 stars
    - Burn with You: This song has some more "mature" themes about hellfire, but overall, it's pretty good. 3.5 stars
    - Battlefield: This is one of the better songs on the album in my opinion. It's a ballad and I think Lea's voice is best suited for ballads. 4.5 stars
    - You're Mine: This is also one of the better songs. It's up beat but works well with Lea's voice. There are times where she sounds a bit like Celine Dion. 4 stars.
    - Thousand Needles: This song showcases Lea's voice nicely. I think it is really good and is one of the darker songs on the album. One of the best songs in the album. 4.5 stars.
    - Louder: This is an upbeat, Katy Perry type song. It's good, not outstanding. However, it is my 9 year old's favorite track on the album. 3.5 stars.
    - Cue the Rain: This is another love song, but the lyrics are a bit better than some of the other songs on the album. 4 stars.
    - Don't Let Go: Yet another Katy Perry style pop song. It's fine. Nothing special. 3.5 stars.
    - Empty Handed: I liked this one a lot. I think the piano sounds really nice and it really does justice to Lea's voice. 4 stars.
    - If You Say So: This is the best song on the album vocally and the best song by far in terms of the lyrics. It's about Cory and Lea's last conversation and you can feel Lea's heartbreak in the song. The Lyrics and vocals are both very strong. 5 stars.

In sum, the album is pleasant and enjoyable. I just wish that Lea had done something more musically interesting, given her talent. Lea's voice is better than Katy Perry and other pop divas and I wish she showed off a bit more. That said, I can't rate the album lower than 4 stars simply because it really is better than her competitor's pop albums. That said, it's mostly forgettable with the exception of the haunting "If You Say So."

I absolutely love this new album from Lea Michele. I am a fan of her music on Glee, and this album takes her talents to a whole new level. Many of the songs are powerful ballads of love, sadness, and strength, and Lea Michele sings them all with grace and beauty in commanding performances. I have listened to the album several times since I purchased it and I cannot get enough of her songs. Many of the tracks are very personal to her, which is clearly evident in the way she sings them, adding to the overall power of the album. If you are looking for a new female album to sing along with, you have found it in Louder.

I have not been this disappointed in an album since Adam Lambert's second album. I had such high hopes for Lea Michele, and to be fair, she does all she can with the material, but the writing is just not ABOUT anything on most of these songs. I only kept three for later listening: Cannonball, Empty-Handed, and If You Say So. Empty-Handed is by Christina Perri. Sia Furler (writer on Cannonball and If You Say So) has a great track record, and Michele was involved in writing If You Say So after Cory Monteith died. It's an interesting lyric but too repetitive after a while, a typical problem with beginning songwriters.

I look forward to her next effort with better songwriters.
