Bombs and Bougainvillea: An Expat in Jerusalem (English Edition) Format Kindle
No. 1 New Release in Israel Travel Guides and No. 1 Bestseller in Jerusalem Travel Guides.
If Linda and her family had foreseen the challenges of relocating to Israel and Palestine, they might have hesitated… They have no idea of the horrors in store. No idea that murders will take place on their doorstep. No idea they’ll be so close to a fatal bombing, or that they’ll adopt a dangerous dog. As they enjoy delicious local food and immerse themselves in different cultures, will the unspoilt countryside and friendships help them overcome the difficulties, or will they flee from an area which at times seems to have one wall, but two prisons?
Perfect for fans of The Lemon Tree by Sandy Tolan, Unorthodox by Deborah Feldman and Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Exquisitely direct, refreshingly enlightened, and riveting from first page to last.
L. E. Decker’s writing is as well-honed as her observations of five years of like and work in Jerusalem and the occupied territories are even-handed and acute. Bombs and Bougainvillea is a deeply engaging, detailed and insightful view into her and her family’s experiences in a part of the world fraught with controversy. In its seductively concise chapters the author sketches scenes of joy and sorrow, the commonplace and the extraordinary, the gentle and the vile, the sympathetic and the merciless without preaching, proscribing, or passing sentence. The predominant tone in most of her stories is humanely reassuring.
As a reader who has worked from time to time in the Middle East, I found “Bombs and Bougainvillea: An Expat in Jerusalem” exquisitely direct, refreshingly enlightened, and absolutely riveting from first page to last.
Open “Bombs and Bougainvillea” and you will immediately understand why it was selected as the Non-Fiction Book of the Year by the Scottish Association of Writers in 2018.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A Fascinating Book
What a fascinating memoir. As someone who has poor knowledge of the area, I was intrigued to find out what life was like for a British family relocating to Israel and Palestine.
The author skilfully combines her family story with accounts of the complexities and challenges of living in a region fraught with age-old problems. Difficulties with house moves, seemingly endless tensions at border crossings and the constant presence of danger do not faze the Deckers. They quickly adapt and immerse themselves into a culture and language so different to their own.
The book is written with great humour and humility. I was charmed by the customs Linda describes, the exotic food and beautiful countryside, the architecture, and the people’s kindness. Throughout, her respect and frank appreciation of the enormous difficulties Israelis and Palestinians encounter almost every day is clear. I found the book a richly rewarding read.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles An insight into life in Jerusalem and its difficulties
A great memoir written in a way that educates those of us who are ignorant of daily life in this strife torn part of the world yet offering humour and compassion. While reading it I wondered how I would have felt in the situation of the author, having friends on both sides. The Jews have suffered terribly but this does not help the Palestinians who are forcibly removed from their homes and sent to refugee camps in their own territory.
The book gives a great insight into life in Jerusalem and vividly contrasts the history and beauty of the place against daily life and all its problems.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Honest Perspective
I really enjoyed reading "Bombs and Bougainvellea" as it was an honest and sincere persepctive from an expat neither Israeli Jew or Palestinian. Getting insight on the how the other half lives was rather enlightening. I learned a great deal, in addition Linda is very funny. I found myself chuckling a great deal at her some of her stories and quips. Not to politicize this response but although the sides are not equal as one has more privilige and power than the other that's not what this book was about. I really appreciated how the story was told, it was sincere with an ernest attempt to explore and appreciate what was found. Again highly recommend because it's a great begining to learnng about two cultures do different from your own.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Not just another expat story or travel guide
I love reading takes about English speaking families who move to another country. This one, however, is different and special. Decker both educates and enlightens her readers about life in Israel for both Jews and Arabs as well as the expat family. She also provides a unique and personal tour guide to the important attractions in Israel. Glad I read this book.
