Editorial Reviews

Kiss' penchant for make-up was inspired by their downtown New York neighbors the New York Dolls and by Alice Cooper, who was on top of the glam-rock world when Kiss' self-titled debut came out in 1974. Rather than dress in drag as the Dolls did, Kiss fashioned their look on a mix of sci-fi and horror films, and the rock & roll of their youth. They fashioned their music on willful hard-rock arrogance. Several songs on KISS became staples in the group's catalog. "Strutter," about a beautiful woman with a confident swagger, mirrored the attitude of the band, and it contained the first of many incendiary Ace Frehley solos. The album also contains "Cold Gin," Ace's signature song; "Deuce," with its quintessential sexual posturing and fiery soloing; and "Black Diamond," Paul Stanley's epic tribute to a streetwalker with a hardscrabble life. Kiss' hunger to succeed resulted in some interesting recording choices, such as transforming teen idol Bobby Rydell's "Kissin' Time" into a stomper with singalong choruses typical of early-'70s pop. There's even an instrumental, "Love Theme From Kiss," a showcase for the quartet's musical synchronicity. It was the beginning of a long and influential career.

It was really good I grew up with KISS one of the singer was in my 10th grade class. They were there twice as well. They had the make up on and all. I wasn't scared at all. That was 40 years ago I was in tenth grade at West Campus. I am an old timer. I enjoyed my music back then and loved in the year two thousand when I had a good time listen to all the other music as well. This is the first time I have bought Kiss's music it was so good it was like being in heaven because all of the other great times I have had with music and to at this age after a long time in music to add it to my collections as well. I listen to that whole CD and jam with it a lone with Carrie Underwood as well. These are the newest and cds I have Lone Star CD as well I just bought as well. It a climb up the ladder at 56 years old for me because I have really been into some music as well. I am a fan of Music as well. I Jammed growing up I jammed even if it was bt myself I jammed. It was very good music but I do have my own version as well and ways of doing things as well and it is fun as well you grow you live for once in your life. I feel so much more mature and I have a great deal of sense of humor as well. I am now 56 years old and I save the best for last for real I bought my CDs on Amazon .com and I used the money I earned from that and bought the cds when they came up as well. It was the right time as well. Good Stuff. It was good growing up.

American Hard Rock seemed to come of age in 1973. Along with other self titled 73 debut LP's from the likes of AEROSMITH (Featuring "Dream On"), LYNYRD SKYNYRD (Pronounced), MONTROSE, and later (75) TED NUGENT, KISS's debut may have Headed the Spear! While American Hard Rock existed prior to these groups, ie BLUE CHEER, GRAND FUNK RAILROAD, IRON BUTTERFLY, STEPPENWOLF, etc... these later US bands seemed the 1st groups able to challenge the British Giants, The WHO, The STONES, ZEP, FLOYD and so on. Whatever the reason, American Hard Rock crystallized in 1973, AEROSMITH - Cooler, Skynyrd - Tougher, MONTROSE - Heavier, NUGENT - Wilder, and KISS - Larger Than Life! It's probably true that if KISS last ditch effort ALIVE hadn't resonated with the record buying public that this LP and probably even the band themselves may have been relegated to Hard Rock runner up status reserved for the likes of ANGEL, BLACKFOOT, STARZ, and other worthy 70's acts. But KISS not only grasped the Golden Ring they used it to perform Acrobatics and arguably Catapult themselves to become perhaps the most successful US Hard Rock Act of all time, and this is the LP that started it all! This KISS LP is a definite 70's Masterpiece, along with ALIVE, Rock N' Roll Over, and Love Gun! So long live America's Over-The-Top 70's answer to the Beatles! John, Paul, George, and Ringo! Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter! Hey its not such a stretch, LOL!

Before all the fame and money, a hard rock band from NYC was getting played on our college radio station with some other new hard rock bands like Montrose and Rush. Those bands also tended to play concerts together in our area. Only in later life have I added their debut material (or any of their material) to my cd collection. This band's debut features some of their most tried and true selections, including "Firehouse", "Deuce", "Strutter", "Cold Gin", and "Black Diamond". Their outrageousness made them famous (and infamous). But this is solid 1974 hard rock, just as "Working Man" was for Rush and "Space Station #5" and "Bad Motor Scooter" were for Montrose.
