The King's Horse - Book 1: A Mondus Fumus Series Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

An all-new steampunk-meets-fairy-tale series of heart, legacy, and duty.

Christina Creangle stared at the smoldering ruins of her life’s work. When the Moufan, an ancient secret society, offered to take care of her senile father as repayment of an old debt, she agreed. The idea of isolation with both her protege and her legendary inventor father, was too compelling to question.

But the winds of history are blowing fierce after the first airship battle, spreading radical ideas to the ambitious and the fearful. Can the Moufan resist the temptation to use everything in their possession to seize power?

Elsewhere, in the ruins of a presidential palace, an old, mechanical horse is discovered that could tip the continent's delicate balance of power.

From the world of the international best-selling series,
The Yellow Hoods, comes a new series that weaves together Black Beauty, Humpty Dumpty, the Muffin Man, Santa Claus, and more.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The King's Horse is full of strong female characters and relationships, women who aren't afraid to speak their minds and give their opinions. Familial relationships are the strongest focus as other characters deal with their own family situations among the fight they're a part of. ... The King's Horse is a dazzling steampunk world, weaving through time and telling the story through a variety of characters in an adventure like no other." - 5 stars, Readers' Favorite

I loved, loved, loved Adam Dreece’s The Yellow Hoods stories so how could I possibly miss a new steampunk-meets-fairy-tale series by him? I read the publisher’s blurb promise of “a new series that weaves together Black Beauty, Humpty Dumpty, the Muffin Man, Santa Claus, and more” and it lured me right in. And now along comes book 1 of that series, The King's Horse, and, well, just: wow. Intrigue, adventure, steampunk, magic, strong female characters (but don’t worry, guys, you’re covered too)? I am sooo there. This book had it all, in one superbly written package. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

If you're looking for a story set in a fanciful but well-developed steampunk world, with hints of fairy-tales that an adult audience can enjoy, and which promises to be the first of a complex and interesting series, look no further.

While this story is set into an existing world that Mr. Dreece had created, you don't need to have read his other stories to jump right in and feel at home. (This is the first book of his that I have read.)

The story is told in the third person from multiple points of view, each character with vested interests of their own, but which, by the end of this first book of the series, promise to converge and conflict in interesting ways in the next volume. Despite following so many story lines, Mr. Dreece manages to cram a lot of story into each character's scenes and keep the entire book length very compact and readable, moving the action along at a good clip. My personal preference would be to see more of the scenes he had to gloss over in order to do this so I could connect with the characters on a deeper level, but then, the book would have had to be much, MUCH longer. For someone who likes to see the action and drama highlights, without a lot of the interim steps, this is perfect—and, of course, keeps the length down.

One of my favourite aspects of the story was getting the sense that this world has a rich history. Enough hints were dropped to make me curious about his other stories in this world. Since I have bought nearly the entire "Yellow Hoods" series for my son (who loves them!), perhaps I'll dive in and sate that curiosity.

As a grammar and word nerd, my only major peeve was the number of editing (especially copy editing) errors that the book contained. The average reader may not notice most of them, but for those of you who care, like me, I wanted to mention it. The story is definitely worth reading in spite of them, but be forewarned.

In conclusion, I am grateful that Mr. Dreece gifted me an ARC copy to review, allowing me to come along on the adventure with him. I will keep an eye out for future titles in this series.

This is the start of a new adventure in a familiar world. For those of you who've read his Yellow Hood series, you'll feel right at home again. For those of you who haven't read that series yet, no worries! This is a great entry point for new readers as we have a new cast of characters beginning their own storylines. The author does refer to some points from his previous stories, but it doesn't leave new readers feeling lost or feeling that they should've read the other series first (though they should, since they're great!). Instead they provide background to the motivations of the new characters here. In this new series, we follow the characters on separate journey's, though I do hope they converge soon, because I'd love to see how they interact with each other. There are plenty of twists and turns and you never know which side is really who you should be rooting for. Everything is a double-edged sword here. There is awesome magic, action, steampunk and fantasy in the mix as well, and I enjoy reading the author's prose.

I really liked the Yellowhood series and was pleasantly surprised to find this book even better, it filled in a lot of background info that explained a lot of motivation and attitudes. I think the battle is just heating up and I know who's side I am on. I received this book as a gift and this is my honest voluntary review.

Nonstop action and adventure! References to some twisted fairy tales! I read this book straight through as I could not put it down. The characters are well written and come to life quickly. This book twists and turns on it's tail. You end up doubting everyone and everything!

I received an ARC copy for an honest review.
