Editorial Reviews
Following Mark Olson's amicable departure, the remaining Jayhawks reconvened under the direction of Gary Louris to record Sound of Lies, the band's most ambitious album to date. Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a subtle grace and power, proving that the Jayhawks remain a distinctive band without Olson.
This remastered edition includes bonus tracks, new liner notes and expanded booklets.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2013The Jayhawks. Wow, what a band. Is it a shame that they are one of the most overlooked groups in modern popular music? Yes, and my sympathies to them for that. But as a long time diehard fan (jumped on the bus with the biggest surge of their career - Tomorrow The Green Grass) I've never let that sway me from pure enjoyment of their tunes, from mellow to raucous. So I'll start with the likely first question, "Why the asterisk?" This is a replacement CD for my original that has been misplaced (it's around somewhere but I'm tired of looking for it), and with CD prices at all-time lows due to the advent of higher quality, more portable lossy formats (and/or less discriminating ears) I ordered it on the cheap. Turns out this is the second CD from American Records that I've bought that has a nasty clicking sound in the rotation. One of the discs of Rainy Day Music does the same thing, which leads me to believe it's a company defect (happens in any player, and other discs do not behave this way). Solution - crank it up and drown out that annoying noise !
Beyond that this album easily makes my Top 10 list - the band is easily Top Five with The Dead, Dylan, John Prine, and a rotation of various bluesmen. I've had it in my car's player for over two weeks now, and I'm not the least bit tired of it or of singing every song at the top of my off-key lungs on my 40-minute commute to work. Every track is sublime, with Think About It, It's Up To You, and Big Star as my fave favorites. The way this band alternately rocks and chills with such aplomb is amazing. The fact that group co-founder Mark Olson is absent in this incarnation of The Jayhawks is a curiosity, and it's obvious that his partner Gary Louris takes the opportunity to spread his wings - this is essentially a solo album with the exception of Tim O'Reagan's very fine Bottomless Cup. I've only been able to see the band perform once - a few years back when Olson had reunited with them. It was great fun, but the chemistry was more curious still as they did not play any songs from the Olson-less Jayhawks (very Waiting For The Sun - Tomorrow - Rainy Day centric). Sound Of Lies is certainly the band's most rockin' work, and while the harmonies of Louris-Olson are (or should be) the stuff of legend, Louris' voice is versatile throughout this album and herein proves to be very capable of stand alone work. Having Marc Perlman as occasional writing partner along with O'Reagan and (wonderful !) keyboardist Karen Grotberg on backup vocals fills these songs to the brim.
Quite simply - when you find some way/format by which to play this music, I predict it will be done frequently.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014I've always liked the Jayhawks. There was a nice acoustic and easy feel to the music and still some of that good old British Invasion feel to what they do. If I had to compare them, the closest match in my mind is the Eagles. Overall, I liked about half the tracks on any CD they did. Then I read about a change in personnel and worried the Jayhawks might be done.
Sampling the tracks I bought this CD without hesitation. Once on my desk, I took a listen and was awed by the new Jayhawks sound. What is that I am hearing, the Beatles? Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra? Certainly the comparisons are warranted.
Songs take unexpected twists and turns, much like the waves rolling in to shore, lifting the listener and gently bringing them back down in melodies that soar and were expertly executed and blended to create a sound so fresh and unique. Many times such a project goes too far, expanding so much on a melody it falls off the beaten path or mixing is so complex it becomes overdone and a confusing mass of noise. The Jayhawks don't venture far off the beaten path but find a way to make the familiar interesting, fresh and still very accessible.
I'll describe this new CD as a woman (since I'm a guy). You notice her across the room and determine she is lovely. You note that gleam in her eye and her gentle smile. You're hooked. Then she looks at you and smiles. At this point it is all over. No other woman in the room can match her. That's my impression of this CD. I always was hooked on the Jayhawks, they just took it up to the next level.
I must note, this new CD is a bit different from prior releases. I think if you were a Jayhawks fan you will remain one and be just as impressed with the next level they have ascended. This might well be one of the most underrated CDs of the year!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2011Good Jayhawks record overall without Mark Olsen. Bridges the gap between Tommorow the Green Grass and Rainy Day Music, maybe considered a hidden gem among the two. Even record, mostly electric but focused on the song craft rather than guitar solos. Sounds more akin to Golden Smog "Pecan Pie" from same era. Also more in line with a Whiskeytown record a la "Stranger's Alamnac". If you like classic alt-country can't go wrong here nice fit with the rest of aforementioned. 4 stars instead of 5 since no outstanding hits, but this isn't a pop record although probably more commercial than early Jayhawks releases. Will we ever get another? Will have to wait and see, until then play this one loud for maximum effect.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2022Sonically spectacular on vinyl, acquiring this 2014 reissue of the original 1997 LP has elevated this effort to be my favorite Jayhawks album. I have had the CD release for years, and obviously didn’t listen to it enough - this album is a masterpiece of heartbreaking and heartfelt lyrics and great musicianship. The ‘hawks really left their (so-called) “alt-country” sound and just went for it to achieve what they were after, styles be damned. The bonus tracks (5, 3 previously unreleased) are all top notch also. Highly recommended for fans of this band or Wilco.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic album from the least prolific band in rock (probably)
This classic album was released in 1997 and was hailed as a great slice of Americana. In light of the new release I dug this out and wow is it great. The tunes are clear, the lyrics great, musicianship to melt the coldest heart and all wrapped up with melodies and harmonies to die for.
Particular faves of mine are ‘Bottomless Cup’ and the stupendous opening track ‘The Man Who Loved Life’ – which sounds better after each time of hearing. Those ‘Eagle Eared’ among you will also see comparisons between the gravelly brilliant ‘Son Volt’ / ‘Uncle Tupello’ and these on tracks such as ‘Dying on the vine’.
Great piano too especially on the summery feeling ‘It’s up to you’. The instruments are also a good indicator of what this has to offer with viola, Wurlitzer, cello and E- bow to name but a few and the end results are a work of pure genius that will stay with you for a very long time and in a very good way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just perfect
Just perfect, never tire of hearing it, probably my all time favourite album. The songs, the chorus's, the guitar (Louris is a fully certified rock god on every track here). Never has a break up sounded so good.
