Editorial Reviews
In the year of psychedelia, Dylan bucked the trend with this rootsy classic. All Along the Watchtower is the highlight on an album packed with amazing tracks like I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine; Dear Landlord; the Wicked Messenger and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2024I know this remaster came out like 20 years ago, but I never got around to picking it up until just now. Suffice it to say, it does sound significantly better than the original CD mastering circa 1987, although the difference is not quite as dramatic as you'll find on the Bringing it all Back Home and Highway 61 remastered 2004 SACD's. But you do get a slightly punchier sound with a tad more clarity, which is probably about as much as a remaster will reveal given the very simple arrangements. And as my headline says, this IS the 2005 SACD remaster, just without the SACD layer that you can't play anyway without an SACD player. So don't fear that those special editions from 20 years ago were any different in terms of normal CD playing/ripping than this one is - save yrself the money and get this one, it sounds great. Indeed, for stereo, this is the definitive mastering since the 2017 Mobile Fidelity one is the mono version (and it is possibly remixed, as is MOFI's wont).
The album itself is extraordinary and obviously a must have for anyone just getting into The Bob, which is hopefully a lot of younger people seeking something slightly more substantive than, oh I don't know, Ed Sheeran or Olivia Rodrigo. And at $7.99 you got no excuse not to pick it up and then spend years trying to figure out just what Bob's getting at in As I Went Out One Morning. Beguiling!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2024(I didn't), but I love it now. His voice had improved a lot by this point in his career but for some reason I was disappointed. The music is the same and the poetry is the same, but all these years later, I have changed, and now I understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2002John Wesley Harding sneaks up on you. I bet a lot of people ignore it because the most anthologized track, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" is not particularly representative of the rest of the album (for example, it's the only track with any "country" touches like pedal steel). The rest of it is an enigmatic series of dream-like encounters, some of which take on the qualities of tall tales, others metaphysical dialogues, others seem like pivotal, shattering experiences.
There is an intimacy to this record that is somewhat akin to the more celebrated Blood on the Tracks, but on this album, Dylan is being completely allusive, leading you at times into thickets of imagery that stretch your mind toward revelations that come slowly if at all. In context with the other music he was producing at the time (i.e. The Basement Tapes), it's clear to see that his isolation and recovery provided strong creative inspiration, leading him to develop a kind of backwoods sense of humor, and a backwoods sense of mystery.
What caps this album off for me as Dylan's best and maybe my favorite album of all time, is his performance. His singing is flawless--I love especially "Drifter's Escape" but the whole album's great. The musicianship is of the highest order, not something you can always count on with a Dylan record; the bassist and the drummer give Dylan solid but subtle support, and Dylan's harmonica playing is liquid. It is recorded guilelessly--he is literally singing in your ear.
Look, I also do love Blood on the Tracks, Blonde on Blonde, Bringing it All Back Home, Love and Theft, Desire; but whereas all those albums feature Dylan defiantly at center stage, demanding to be heard, John Wesley Harding (and the Basement Tapes) give you a Dylan who is in deep, private contemplation of the mysteries about which, elsewhere, he is so sure about what he has to say. This is a more attractive Dylan to me--no less brilliant, but someone who's taking us along for the ride.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2024A favorite Dylan album. I had the original vinyl before the CD age. Perhaps my favorite track is "All Along the Watchtower." "There are many among us who feel that life is but a joke/You and I have been through that and know that is not our fate." Indeed! BTW Wikipedia states the character's correct name is John Wesley Hardin.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2007This was Dylan's first album back after the motorcycle crash, and it's a moving, mysterious, and poignant album. The songs are shorter than his previous (and later) albums, and the instrumentation is bare to the bone. A lot of rock acts in the 1960's were trying to outdo one another (The Beach Boys put out Pet Sounds, The Beatles try to one up them with Sgt. Pepper, The Stones had Their Satanic Majesty's Request, Dylan had his Blonde on Blonde), so when Dylan made this simple (though not simplistic) album, the rock world was hugely surprised. Considering the turmoil going on in the country (Vietnam, Woodstock, hippies), this album is so far removed from that. John Wesley Harding is an album that's quite surprising in its depth and maturity. It's quickly becoming a favorite, with kudos going to the great song The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest. I saw Dylan do it in concert once (he did all the verse), and it's always been a favorite. But there isn't one wasted song on this album. This was Dylan's last great album for a while. He followed this with the cute (but slight) Nashville Skyline, the godawful Self Portrait, and the decent New Morning. All those albums had some good stuff on them, but they weren't as dynamic as JWH (and its predecessors) were. Quite a beautiful album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Bob Dylan album
I'm really enjoying these mono releases. The balance of the mix changes and different instrumental lines come to the fore. I used to have the stereo mix which was fine but I am very happy with this too.
