I've been a fan of Andrew's since his Something Corporate days in the early 2000. However, back then, I didn't know who he was, but knew that I liked his music. I eventually grew out of the pop punk music and stopped listening to him.

I discovered Jack's Mannequin just a few years ago (well after they had broken up) and loved it! It was a more mature sound than pop punk but still had the same feel as Something Corporate.

Then I discovered Andrew McMahon under his own name. I found out that he was the brains behind those two bands that I loved so much and had to get his new record. He went under just "Andrew McMahon" at the time. I wasn't too keen on his new synthy sound, but the songs still had the same character as Something Corporate and Jack's so it grew on me.

I saw him in concert last year to promote his previous album, and that was it. I became obsessed. I have now seem him twice since that first time. He is an excellent performer and keeps you into his performance for his entire run on stage (which is about an hour and a half of non-stop songs going one right into another. Expect to hear about 20-22 songs in a show. You get your money's worth!)

Enough exposition. The point is, I've loved Andrew from the beginning, even before I knew what his name was. Now how is his new album? First to note that he has done away with guitars. His band consists of a drummer, a bass player, a keyboardist and himself on his piano. The album still has a bit of a synthy sound like his previous one, but not as much.

    1. Canyon Moon: The first track sticks out as a radio single to me. It's super catchy and upbeat. I hope he releases it as one soon. 10/10
    2. Cecilia And The Satellite: This was the first single off the album. Great song! I love how personal it is yet still accessible to everyone who listens to it. 10/10
    3. High Dive: Another great song. I didn't like it upon first listen since I thought the verses were too wordy, but it grew on me. I also love the "...you dance with your headphones on and I could watch you all night long dancing to someone else's song." I love that it's not just a guy pining for a girl, but a musician guy pining for a girl. 9/10
    4. All Our Lives: I wasn't a fan of this one. There was some good lyrics "...There's only one mistake that I have made. It's giving up the music in my fingertips by trying to get to heaven through my veins", but overall didn't really impress me. The lyrics came off like he was writing about every little nuance that happened, and I'm not a fan of that style (Jack's "Hammer's and Strings" comes to mind.") 5/10
    5. See Her On The Weekend: Weirdly catchy at first, but very monotone. I didn't stick with this one for long. 3/10
    6. Black and White Movies: Love it! This was one that I wasn't a fan of initially, but loved it after I heard it performed live. He didn't do anything special with it, but I think just being "forced" to really listen to it opened me up to the song. 8/10
    7. Driving Through A Dream: I don't think I've made it through this song. I don't know what it is (maybe the very 80's-vibe), but I'm not a fan of it. 1/10
    8. Halls: LOVE THIS SONG! I've heard it called a modern version of "Amy, I" from Jack's (which I'm oddly not a fan of), but I love this song! It definitely has a Jack's Mannequin feel. It feels a bit different because it's the first breakup song on the album. Once again, the lyrics are very personal, it sounds like he wrote about a past breakup between him and his girlfriend (now wife) and going on tour without her. 10/10
    9. Rainy Girl: ALSO LOVE THIS SONG! This is an awesome throwback to a Something Corporate sounding ballad. Think "Walking By." A simple arrangement (piano and strings) and personal lyrics. Doesn't get better than that with Andrew. He wrote it about his daughter before she was born. 10/10
    10. Maps for the Getaway: LOVE IT LIVE! I wasn't a fan of the album version of this song even though the buzz was that this was the strongest on the album aside from Cecilia. I heard it live and fell in love. Andrew makes this song come alive. He had an awesome extended outro with him jamming on his piano. 5/10 (studio), 10/10 (live)

Bottom Line: Should you buy this album?
If you were a fan of Something Corporate or Jacks' Mannequin? Yes! This is a more mature sounding, but similar songs-writing to his previous bands.
If you heard Cecilia on the radio? Yes! The rest of the album is just as awesome!
If you've never heard of this guy in your life but like alternative/piano rock? Yes! Chances are you'd like him.
If you are a vocal snob who primarily listens Broadway performers but also likes the occasional rock music? No. Andrew's only fault is that he is not the strongest singer. I wish I could share his music with my parents or people who are on the fence with this type of music, but I just can't. Andrew sounds great at what he does (meaning don't ask him to sing the National Anthem), but his voice is not one that everyone will like. Unfortunately, I think this may be why he hasn't gotten the radio play he deserves.

To leave on a high note, this album is awesome! And any fan of Andrews older bands or an alt rock/piano rock fan will love it!

    Nice composer! Well orchestrated.

I'd admit, this album is different than most of Andrew's work. But it is still his style of writing. Like the Beetles, Andrew doesn't conform to a music, but rather he evolves his song writing style. "Rainy Girl" is a song that is more like Andrew's old roots, and "Canyon Moon" is more like a pop-rock song from Jack's Mannequin. The other tracks are a more modern version of Andrew's song writing. If you are a musician or just a major fan of Andrew McMahon then I recommend buying this CD.

I love this CD. Andrew McMahon completely meets all of my expectations with this. I’ve listened to him in Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin and this CD definitely does not fall short of those CDs. If you’re a fan of him from before, this is worth investing in. I was told by a friend to look into the album, and man was he right! It is wonderful music that falls right in line with his other music. I think it is well worth the purchase.

Andrew can do no wrong. At first I was a little taken aback, because all the songs sounded so peppy, but the lyrics are what really make this CD a great one. Andrew McMahon is a master lyricist and after a few listens of the cd to get used to the new sound, I really really love it. I've enjoyed his music as he's traveled through all of his various genre's and bands, and I like where he is headed!

If you love Andrew, then this record is worth every penny. Some of the songs have weird synth music, which I don't know why he's into that right now, but whatever. I can look past it. Some of the songs aren't as angsty as his past records, but he's changing and growing older. A lot of the synth songs on here are better live, but still good on the cd. I don't feel as much depth in this record as his past records though, which kinda sucks. The songs just don't feel like they have as much meaning. Still love him though, but I miss my emotional Andy. Lol too weird?

Andrew McMahon can do no wrong. This album is beautiful, with some styling similar to his older stuff, but also you can tell he's matured musically as well. My favorites are High Dive, Halls, and Cecilia and the Satellite, Maps for the Getaway, and All Our Lives. Not quite as crazy about See Her on the Weekend, but it's ok and I don't skip any tracks. More albums, please :)

Love this CD to pieces... just a little upset that the case is really beat up and it was just stuffed in my mailbox. The last song won't rip to my computer and it stops playing half way through the last song! DON'T BUY CDS OFF OF AMAZON!!!!

Good quality pressing on black vinyl. Seems a touch lighter than 180g. Plays well all the way through and the music itself is very nice. Not quite Something Corporate but you can hear it in a number of songs!

Another fantastic album from Andrew McMahon. Loved this guy since Something Corporate and love the way his songs have grown and matured with him.
Even if you have never heard of him, give him a go if you like songs that have feeling and meaning and you will be amazed by the talent this guy has
