Album does not belong in a bubble envelope
I know this has been a concern for many of vinyl lovers for a while, vinyl lp's should be shipped in a cardboard sleeve not a bubble envelope. Please rectify this shipping error. I love Uriah Heep been a fan since their inception

Now this is a bird of a completely different color! Immediately following their mish-mash of a "let's figure out our sound" first recording, Uriah Heep returned to the studio and went for broke, recording what is absolutely the most ambitious, progressive, creative and inspired album of their entire career. As opposed to my review of the 2016 remaster of that first LP, this remastered classic is SPOT ON. Crisp, clean, and Mick Box's guitar is shoved out front, where it belongs, as Salisbury also contains his most jazzy, intense and personal delicious chords and solos. It's a joy to hear what Mick is doing in Time To Live, High Priestess and Salisbury so loud and pristine. He really shines on this. It's as if he said to Andy Pearce, "I'm the only original member left, turn me up to 11!" And that mixing does not come at the expense of the other members, each one comes through clear as a bell, and David Byron's Gothic Operetta and the (introduced for the first time) now classic "Danish Fjord" vocal passages are spine-tingling. Also, I've always wished for a version of The Park where Ken's Hensley's self-recorded "playground audio" was actually cranked up and audible, and my wish has come true. The Park is unquestionably the most lyrically and musically lovely song in Heep's canon. Finally, top it all off with the sensational 17minute plus closer Salisbury featuring a 27-piece orchestra. Grand, glorious, and with a 4 minute wah-wah solo that melts the paint off your walls. Now, on to Disc Two, the "Alternate Versions". I am happy to report that these, for the most part, ARE actual, different alternative takes, many as good as the originals. High Priestess is extended and paints fantastic tempo changes and dynamics, the new Time To Live has a slightly slowed down tempo with a completely different Byron interpretation of his own lyric. I actually prefer this version to the original! Perhaps it's just the newness of it, but it is haunting. There are some duds; there are better Lady In Blacks out there, and the new Simon The Bullitt Freak is a mess, doing grave injustice to the original "B" side version. But the crème de la crème is the live version of Salisbury. 1971 desk copy quality of course, but it still smokes. The almost 18 minute freakout jam of a song rips, reminding one of Brian Auger or Tony Williams Emergency Live. Incredible. One has to wonder where the Mighty Heep would be today if they had continued mining this vein. Anywaze, this CD will be loved by fans of The Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Atom Heart Mother/Meddle era Floyd, Queen and Rush, to name a few. For Heep fans, this is THE remastered version of this classic. And for fans of early 70's embryonic Progressive Rock, this belongs in your collection, period.

I remember hearing Uriah Heep way back but never got into them until recently when a friend turned me on to Demons and Wizards and Sweet Freedom. I was a big Wishbone Ash fan back in the day (Argus is still a masterpiece) and there are some similarities in their early albums - particularly their second albums. Both have an eclectic mix of hard driving rock, progressive rock, folk and jazz influences, and neither was likely to get much airplay. However Salisbury is a much stronger effort overall. When I first listened to it I was taken aback by the folk tinges of The Park and Lady In Black, but on further listening I really like them. I don't understand how the critics panned them - they are excellent musically, creative, original and entertaining. They were willing to try out new directions (maybe that's why?) and on this album they nailed them dead center - I think the critics display their own lack of musical talent and training by dissing this band.

It starts out with the hard rocking Bird of Prey - I loved it on the first listen, though maybe the middle section is a little strange. The folk-like melody of The Park is actually a beautiful tune that grows on me each time I listen to it, and it's got that neat jazzy stop-time on the middle. Time to Live is another good hard rocker much more like their first album. Then Lady in Black - first listen was "what the heck is this?". But again, the more I listen the better I like it. I could easily imagine rowdily singing the chorus in my local pub after a couple of pints.

Then things get progressive. First High Priestess has some neat time changes with a driving 15/8 melody (4/4 + 4/8), pretty advanced stuff for a rock band the critics hated. Then the title track - the only rock song I have ever heard with a wind ensemble playing - a very British touch indeed. And the arrangement isn't a lame commercial thing or a pretentious tone poem, it rocks, it swings, it energizes, it's the best orchestral arrangement I've ever heard for a rock band. A long song with many moods, great instrumentals all around, excellent singing, a hard driving jazzy 8/8 rhythm with the organ and the orchestra in the middle followed by a searing Mick Box guitar solo - wow! This piece is a masterpiece, the sound is vibrant and crisp. As a classically trained musician I absolutely love this.

The extra songs are good, at least the first 2, Simon the Bullet Freak - a nice rocker that was on the original American edition - and Here Am I. Here Am I is another melodic vocal with mellow wah wah guitar with a great rocking middle section. I don't care much about the alternate takes, I usually skip over them, but they're fine as well, they just duplicate what's already on the album.

this is a great remastered 2 cd deluxe set of this 1971 classic, i have bought the heep catlog on cd about 5 times over the past 20 years and i did not think i would start again but outside of the japan papersleeve editions that came out years ago and the other deluxed editions that came out years ago this edition gives you a bonus disc of great mixes and was probably the album that broke heep way back in 1971, i love this uk sleeve and the us sleeve just as much, this comes with a great booklet inlay and deluxe style packaging and the remastering makes this sound the best it has in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! any die hard heep fan will love this, though i still love what heep are doing now some 45 years on the david byron fronted heep was the most special i will always agree but there are so so many post byron heep records from the 1970s through there most recent studio album outsider from 2014. i have been a life long fan!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased the original Salisbury Vinyl Album at a PX in Korea; while in the military. I held on to the album for years until losing my home to a fire. I am a HUGE Uriah Heep fan and saw them live 7 times. Over the years I had replaced some of my Heep albums with CDs; but never really searched out Salisbury. For some reason, the album popped into my head and I just went nuts craving it. The title song "Salisbury" is a masterpiece, showing the individual talents of each member in the group. I will cherrish this CD forever. I thoroughly enjoy listening to it every time I drive somewhere in my car. If you are a HEEP fan; I highly recommend this one. It is one of their best.
