Editorial Reviews

The Handmaids Tale - Original Television Soundtrack - Lakeshore Records released The Handmaid's Tale - Original HULU Series Soundtrack digitally on May 5, 2017. The album features the series' original score by composer Adam Taylor. The Handmaid's Tale was created, written and executive produced by Bruce Miller and executive produced by Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Ilene Chaiken. The Handmaid's Tale is produced by MGM Television and internationally distributed by MGM. Adam Taylor... "We knew from the start that we wanted to use classical instruments, as well as synths and atonal elements. One idea for the score was to reiterate sounds and instruments through processes that would create a loss in fidelity, like a poor quality photocopy... much like how life in Gilead was a distorted replica of normal life." He experimented with an old tape echo to achieve this sound. "I went as far as tracking an instrument, then changing the speed of the tape to 'fake' melodic changes. It took some time to get right, but was worth it in the end - and ended up being crucial to making, what was essentially a two-note theme, sound emotive and interesting."

My fault - I did not explore the information about the CD or even look at the track list before buying this. The music is ominous and haunting and some will love it but I was expecting a compilation of the songs used in the series and especially the consistently interesting songs played at the ends of the episodes. This is not that.

The soundtrack to "The Handmaid's Tale" is great. This is a great soundtrack / score from Adam Taylor. It is solid, well-done and entertaining. All (17) tracks on here are great.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because of the producer's asinine decision to play Moss' monologue over track 6. The writing is beautiful and poetic, but guess what: I didn't pay to hear a reading of the script. I payed for the score. If I wanted to hear the script I'd watch the show. The reason this upsets me so much is because "The Smell of Caves" is such a beautiful piece. I have ADD and am incapable of reading if I can hear someone talking, singing, etc. I listen to instrumental music to help me concentrate. Apparently, the producer didn't think Taylor's music was worth listening to by itself.

Anyway, the score is still worth buying in spite of this derp. I love that haunting electronic harmony that underscores the serene melody. Can't wait to hear what Taylor does with season 2.

As this is an original soundtrack, I wasn't expecting each song heard in the show to be here (Go to Spotify for that). This has some great tracks from the series that are hauntingly beautiful including "Moira and June Escape" and "The Promenade of Stolen Children"- Highly recommend for fans of the show.

This is the score, not the soundtrack. I’m seeing negative reviews on here for people expecting songs with lyrics. This is not that. Ambient background music is all that is contained here. Two pieces have spoken word by Elisabeth Moss. It’s what you hear in the show. I have not watched the show, I only heard the score while working around the house and I bought it, so hat should say what I think of it.
Packaged in a digipack, the CD is presented nicely. Art looks nice, CD sounds good.
I give it a 4/5, nothing wrong with it, just not my absolute favorite, but certainly a keeper. I am looking forward to the score for Season 2

Wasn't what I expected. There are some great songs in The Handmaid's Tale and I think I might have fallen asleep waiting to hear them or else there will be another CD
