- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2016“Take Me To The Alley,” Gregory Porter’s second Blue Note album, gives us a impression of his growth as a singer-song-writer. His earthy, comforting style, which is too steeped in soul and R&B, remains beyond type as a jazz singer. To those who look askance at Porter, he asserts his live shows are still jazz shows. “However you get ’em, it doesn’t matter; you get ‘em. My voice is a jazz voice, but it’s also a soul.” During a telephone interview with Allen Morrison, Porter explains his albums are a document of what he’s feeling at that time. “The songs and the words just come out the way.” He’s thinking about being well-rounded, dealing with different aspects of love. Then there’s the political content. (Down Beat, June, ’16)
“Holding On” is a result of his experience working with the British electronic dance music duo Disclosure. For the opening track of his new album, Porter remakes the song as a straight-up R&B version. Porter doesn’t mean to preach, he just can’t help it, Morrison writes. He inherited his stance toward life from his mother. Porter continues, he decided to not run from the massive effect that his mother had on his life. “I’m just regurgitating what she put in me.” “Don’t Lose Your Steam” imparts a message about tenacity and self-reliance. Now he is passing on all Porter got from his mother to the young generations. On “Day Dream” he’s positive about having dreams. Porter’s mother always helped the homeless, the hungry, the handicapped, any body who needed some elevation. He got that out in “Take Me To The Alley.” He declares his determination of love on “Consequence Of Love.” He’ll fight for the right to be love. His confidence turns to disappear on “In Fashion.” He finds himself obsessed with how she dresses and whom she sees when she’s without him.
“More Than A Woman” is a praise for his wife. Though she never walked on the water, nor she turned water to wine, she brought love to his life. Porter calls his mentor, Kamau Kenyatta, and his family as his ’tastemakers.’ He moved his family back to Bakersfield. He asserts a lot of what he’s singing came out of his experience in Bakersfield. “In Heaven” stops us to think over ourselves. We’ll frustrate in finding out not every dreams come true. He gently cheers up to lift our heads up. “Insanity” has a similar atmosphere with “My One And Only Love.” Porter’s baritone voice deplores how they fell apart, and craves bringing love on back to him. The track becomes my favorite. Betrayed love continues on “Don’t Be A Fool.” He expostulates not to give nights to someone else, while giving days to those who really love. “Fan The Flames” is not really what’s happening right now. Porter says Trump is fanning the flames of a hatred that he may not be able to take back. He fans the flames of love. On “French African Queen” he loudly sings what he is doing now.
Porter seems to find out aesthetic way of his style. The movement of 12 songs are quite similar in it’s wayfaring. Following two or three chorus by Porter, a carefully picked up instrument, matching with the mood of a song, unrolls an imaginative ad-lib before the ending. Consistent bandmates keep sending a sparkling sound. A delightful crispy sound of piano and bass is dissolved into Porter’s soulful voice, creates a blissful moment.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2016I heard and saw Gregory Porterf or the first time many years ago in a small club in NYC when he was a lesser known player and loved his voice and song reportorie instantly. Have been a huge fan ever since and have seen him as well listen to his albums on a regular basis. That said, it pains me to say this somehow this album did not meet my expectations. Gregory's voice is as captivating as ever but I was not entirely pleased with the song selection or the lyrics on some of the songs on his latest album. The last two songs which feature other singers and alternate versions of the original songs on the album seem a little more of pop and less of jazz oriented to me. They seem to dilute the impact and quality of the overall album. Similarly lyrics for songs like Insanity seem a little trite to me. I will remain a huge fan and hope that Gregory remains true to his jazz roots and keeps making the music world a richer place with his original music. Best wishes.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2016Sooooo, I think I'm gonna have to turn this one day getaway into a nationwide trek just so I can keep on listening to this most amazing, awesome, inspiring, heart tugging, though provoking MUSIC!!! I love listening to music in my car much more than while at home, and this album deserves constant play. I so admire this man -- no selling out, no pandering with his music. This album feels so collaborative -- I can just picture his bandmates bopping their heads and swinging along with him -- feels like the listener is invited into the process. If you have young kids in your family, "Don't Lose Your Steam" and "Day Dream" are going to sing volumes to you. "Fan the Flames" is an anthem that will further motivate my activist daughter (and we were lucky to see Porter in concert back in February and hear "Take Me..." back then.) "More than a Woman" -- love it, and can imagine it becoming a wedding music standard, but I doubt that any song Porter pens will become "standard." Gosh, I just love this album -- lyrical content is so emotive, the band and Porter's voice just groove those feelings right into your soul.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022A friend recommended the song "Stop This Insanity" and after a listen, I bought the CD & Gregory Porter concert tickets for Valentines Day. The CD has two versions of that song, one is a duet. I still can't make up my mind which I like best. I'm just glad I have both on Take Me To The Alley.
