Wow. Like great conductors, Mellencamp and Burnett bring the best out of the musicians chosen to contribute on this incredibly diverse collection. King's dialogue between the songs weaves this work together into a tight, compelling work of art. It is almost as if they have created a new genre.

Just to take this work on its musical merits, I can't remember when the artists featured in this album sounded better or more compelling. The songs featuring Sheryl Crow--when has she ever sounded better?--and Dave and Phil Alvin bring life to the three central characters of the story. Kris Kristofferson has dug into the depths of his talent to create a song that stands up to any of his classics. And the introduction of young Clyde Mulroney on "My Name is Joe" is THE discovery of the year. But these short observations are not meant to short change the songs featuring Ryan Bingham, Rosanne Cash, Elvis Costello, Mark Ribot and everyone else who added so much to the final production.

But the reals musical stars, as noted above, are Mellencamp and Burnett. Together with King they have created an American masterpiece that will add immeasurably to their respective legacies.

Quick Tip: If you have an iPad, don't neglect to get the screenplay that goes along with this album, which is found on your favorite music/video/BOOK store located on your iPad. It is interactive and has snippets of music, animation and conversation included for a third of the price of the physical copy.

I liken this album to a a great theatrical soundtrack - the music is AMAZING by itself, but listening to the songs with their context in the screenplay makes them shine.

Excellent guest artists, who do a very powerful job, including Elvis Costello as the Devil, Neko Case as the Girl in the Middle, Kris Kristofferson as the Father and many other performances that flesh out the screenplay in vivid color and emotion.

If you're into blues or something akin to Tom Waits, or a fan of any of the guest artists on this album, don't pass this one up! You'll find new things with every play-through and depth with the reading of the screenplay.

After all of the hoopla, this is a very disappointing cd. Although the critics are ecstatic that the overrated feuding Alvin brothers are here together, their contribution is of minor consequence. This essentially is a Sheryl Crow sings Mellencamp album with all of the expected highs and lows that each are known for. Crow has finally settled in as country singer after decades of tries at being a pop, folk or L.A. singer. She delivers on "Away From This World", her finest performance in at least 20 years despite showing up on every tribute album known to mankind (her connections in the music world have a lot of pull and her model type look has never hurt either). Crow is less successful on 5 other tracks but all are competently performed. Kudos to the tasty guitar work of Marc Ribot whom I am not familiar with.

As with all T-Bone Burnett productions (I know, I forgot to say genius) there are the slowly paced reverbed ballads and mournful tunes which set moods well but do not always hold up as stand alone music tracks. This is definitely a soundtrack album, not a collection of fully realized songs. Elvis Costello is completely self indulgent and Taj Mahal and Kristofferson are simply tired. Ryan Bingham's over done affectations (heresy) aren't memorable here either.

So despite all of the names here, I would pass on buying this. See the production instead.

I was surprised that it was a musical. I got the CD version and played it in the car. When the characters spoke it was difficult to understand what they were saying sometimes. But I really liked the music part of the story. All great artist and the music really rocked. I had to listen to it a few times before I got the details of the story straight but that could just be me. As I said, the music was great. Blues and Rock, can't go wrong.

Everyone shines dully in the dusty moonlight of this Burnett/King/Mellencamp masterstroke. Every musically and lyrically excellent song on this set is a dusky gem. And each is knitted to the next by a chalky skein of dialogue alternately thigh-slappingly funny and back-country melancholic. There is just enough spoken word to create a story-line but not so much as to circumscribe the run of imagination. This endows the whole enterprise with a friable majesty and well-deep depth. The length and coloring of the songs are in seamless symmetry with what precedes them and with what follows them. Each actor and singer is perfectly cast and executes exquisitely. This work is an immensely enjoyable chunk of authentic Americana that re-creates the radio-play days of yore for a lost generation. Dim the lights, pull up your afghan and settle in for the chilly haunted house ride that is Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.

This album has really taken me by surprise. They've been pushing the collaborative element of the project on Letterman and Colbert this week, and I expected to be disappointed, which is usually the case when there's too much star-power on a creative endeavor. But the songs from this project are amazing--best stuff I've heard from John Mellencamp since "Pink Houses"! And the performances by the likes of Ryan Bingham, Neko Case, Rosanne Cash, Kristofferson, Dave and Phil Alvin, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, John Mellencamp, and Taj Mahal are, almost without exception, stellar throughout. Haven't liked a record this much in a long while. Deep, rich American Gothic, for me this is an Americana "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." It's great that Dave and Phil Alvin are featured in such a pivotal role! Looks like this may be the only thing I'm going to be listening to for a while.

No Better Than This” bestach.
