“A fresh, heartwarming voice.”  —Jodi Thomas, New York Times bestselling author
For champion professional knitter Dymphna Pearl, inheriting part of a sun-blasted ghost town in the Texas hill country isn’t just unexpected, it’s a little daunting. To earn a cash bequest that could change her life, she’ll have to leave California to live in tiny, run-down Fat Chance for six months—with seven strangers. Impossible! Or is it?
Trading her sandals for cowboy boots, Dymphna dives into her new life with equal parts anxiety and excitement. After all, she’s never felt quite at home in Santa Monica anyway. Maybe Fat Chance will be her second chance. But making it habitable is going take more than a lasso and Wild West spirit. With an opinionated buzzard overlooking the proceedings and mismatched strangers learning to become friends, Dymphna wonders if unlocking the secrets of her own heart is the way to strike real gold.

I loved learning more about Dymphna, who was introduced in Celia's earlier books. the idea of putting a group of strangers into a situation to see how they will interact may not be new, but the way this plot is laid out certainly is. Each of the characters is unique, and just when I thought I had figured out what would happen next, something happened to prove me wrong. Welcome to Fat Chance, Texas was an entertaining, light-hearted read. I feel badly that I finished it so quickly! Now I have to wait to see what happens when the next book comes out!

This book was interesting in its content and not exactly what I had expected. The intricate way each character came together with the others to form a bond was different, especially in today's society. The story line was uplifting and quite enjoyable. I would recommend this book to anyone.

A aging multi millionaire has guilt about his life actions that resulted in his vast worth. He broke promises, cheated and deceived to get money opportunities his whole life. He picks 7 persons or relative of 7 to makes amends to in his video will. He buys a ghost town in central Texas keeps a man there to oversee the town. He decides he is the Sheriff and Mayor. The millionaire requires 7 persons, including his daughter and her X, to live and build up the ghosts town in order to get what he has left them in his will. They agree and are delivered there by a Rv. Nearest place for goods is hours by mule pack. With limited funds, no web connection, very different backgrounds and talents they must learn to barter to survive the 6 months. Each has been assigned a part of town to maintain. Soon the town has strangers causing trouble. A person who wants the town himself wants them gone. The plot is interesting but I could see where other issues could been addressed such as illness, emergency care. Also extreme weather changes in 6 months time. But as a Texan I know this and maybe not obviously to average reader.

There is so much wish fulfillment in this book that I found it hard to put down. First, you are SELECTED by some billionaire to leave your daily, sort of okay, but not that great, existence for a forced six months in a ghost town with other selected guests…there is a cash prize at the end that , of course, is the theoretical carrot at the end of the stick…but the characters all decide, for well motivated reasons, to not just stick it out but to pursue excellence or, at least, personal expression…I wanted to be there, needing to make whatever endeavor I had been assigned to work in this Not Very Utopian All Too Human World to thrive…sweet and sexy characters…back stories galore… Have fun!

I agree with the other critique, the names are awful. Usually if a character has an unusual name, my brain will make up something close and that's how I read the name for the book. This character's name was so awful/weird, that my brain couldn't settle on a name and I kept thinking "wait, who's that?" The book was not written in a way that I could easily follow. I found myself reading sentences over to figure out what was being said. I can't say anything about the story, I never got to Texas with them.

How can I put in words how much I liked this book. I felt as though I was one of the residents of Fat Chance, Texas.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get away for awhile in the book world.
