I am writing off of "its 3:30 in the morning and I just finished the book" adrenaline right now, so please ignore spelling and gramatical errors. I am not an english major after all.....I just enjoy a good book.

I must admit that I was first drawn to this book by its amazing cover! I know, I know, you are not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but having a fantastic one doesn't hurt right? The whole time I was reading this book, I pictured this cover girl as Shade and it definitely works well for the character writen.

Shade's Character is one that I loved right from the beginning. She is a normal teenager for all we know with only the annoying voices in her head to point out any hint of the supernatural. Then one day when her busy mom forgets to pick Shade up from school, and Shade is lead by the voices on a path that will change her forever. In a matter of hours her world is flipped upside down while she obediantly follows the instuctions from the voices in her head as they tell her to do things that most teenagers know instinctivly as warning signs of danger. I found myself at the beginning wanting to yell at Shade "Are you Crazy?" I mean go in a Creepy Building/Warehouse....Check....Follow a strange Man home....check.......I was like what's next here a strange blue van and a man inside offerring puppies and candy?? And all of this in the first chapter. I didn't know what was going to happen, but I knew I was along for the ride. At least to make sure that this girl made it out of the book alive if nothing else.

I must admit when Shade first met Jack I thought I had the book all figured out already an even groaned inside a little. I was thinking, "Here we go again....Girl Meets mysterious guy she is attracted to...He plays hard to get..they find out they were destined to be together...the end. You know the same old story with a different name. Boy was I blown out of the water by what really happened. Don't think you know what is going to happen while reading this....I promise that you don't.

As Shade learns about the Faeries and her destined but not at all chosen path, I love how her character keeps a sense of realism. Shade is a character that is very real and relatable. I love the she consents to take the journey but still has the attitude of "I really don't want to do this." I think if any of us were ever told that the fate of a race was in our hands alone we would most likely accept the challange but would all be secretly thinking "why me" or "I don't want to do this, I just want to go home." I know I would be, and this is how Shade is as well....She accepts her fate but she is not at all happy about it.

I also admire how the author doesn't give everything away all at once. There is suspense throughout the book as you slowly learn more and more about Shade and her ever growing entourage. The Faerie people are not all what they seem, and that is not a good thing. For every good one there are 100 that would like to enslave and enchant you to carry out their will. You learn something new on almost every page, and it is a fun and interesting world to get lost in. Shade's journey is tough and not knowing who she can and cannot trust makes it difficult. This book will keep you guessing the whole time, and just as you get one question answered you have 5 more waiting to take its place.

This book has everything that a good book should....action, suspense, fantasy/paranormal, strong characters, a few fight scences, gorgeous faerie men all around, and a touch love, and then it concludes right when it knows it has enslaved you to leave you yearning for more. This book has an enchantment that would rival any of the demi-fey where it draws you in and refuses to let go, even after you have read the last page. I am desperately awaiting the sequal to find out how this journey continues! Amazing!

    Short Summary:
After learning that there is more to the world around her than what meets the eye, Shade embarks on a mystical and dangerous quest across Faerie lands with her Faerie warriors at her side.
    My Review:
I know, I know! They say don't judge a book by the cover, but how can you not? This one is soooo pretty. I got lucky and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this one when I was randomly downloading new kindle books. The book itself is free, but I paid the extra $1.99 for the audio version to take along with me on my summer trip this past week. It was well worth it. The only negative thing I have to say about the audio version is that I wish the narrator would have stuck to her native accent more often. I liked the British/Irish/Scottish accents she was able to do, but I would have left the "American" accent alone completely. It sounded a bit "lisp-y". Other than that, I loved the narrator for this book.
I really enjoyed the feel of the world that Purdy created in this book. The imagery and descriptions were fantastic. There were places and details in the story that I thought were refreshing as far as the realm of the Fae was concerned and some of it's characters that Shade met along the way. It was face paced, each character was described well, and the journey had plenty of twists along the way.

Let's talk about the romance. Some people hate when there isn't an obvious romance immediately in a book. I am not one of those people. I actually really love the fact that Shade doesn't immediately swoon for every guy around, or that every guy is immediately infatuated with her. I enjoy the slow build up of relationships throughout books, with a quick taste of lust and desire here and there. It is PERFECT in this book. Now that I'm in book 2, I'm not as nauseated as I might have been if certain events had been introduced too early. I am secretly holding out for hope for a romantic relationship between Shade and one of the male characters, but I won't tell you which one. I really hope that the author does a completely 180 and has Shade fall for someone random, who we weren't expecting. That would be awesome and make a lot of readers mad, which would be fantastically evil.

    That's the good ^^
    Here's the bad...
I still really hate Shade. I can't stand a whiny heroine. I understand that a "seemingly normal" human, who finds herself in an extraordinary situation is scared, worried, and curious. I get that. What I don't enjoy is page after page of her being so terrified that she is constantly thinking of going home, or someone else is coming to her rescue, or the fact that she can't come up with some witty banter or something with her enemies to make her sound a little less of a puss and more of a bad-ass female lead. As much as I loved the idea of this book and understand that this book sets up Shade's character for more important roles later, it just really frustrated me that going into book 2 she hasn't changed in this regard at all (in fact, I think it's worse). It's okay for one of her weaknesses to be that she is scared, but at some point as the "savior" character that she is being set up to be in the future, she needs to man the hell up and start at least pretending to be brave. I really hope that she becomes a strong lead character, without too much more help from the males in the book.
Overall, I really liked this book and immediately bought the second one (audio as well). 4/5 stars because I'm not impressed with the main character...yet. I can't really say if the actual book was written well since I used the audio version, so I'll have to pass on criticizing the editing. This series has great potential to turn out to be an unexpectedly good read. We'll see if Purdy surprises me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nette Geschichte, die leider etwas dümpelt
Reviewed in Germany on July 27, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fairytale
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2013
Got this book while it was on offer and glad I did as it was compelling and though the subject was Fairies it seemed fresh and new.

Shade is the eldest child of 4 who helps her single mom wrangle the family together. Occasionally she may be forgotten about but she loves her family completely. You'd think she would never get privacy but she's kept one big secret from everyone but her best friend, that she can hear voices.

On her way home from school the voices lead her to handsome man in an abandoned warehouse who tells her she has to follow him if she wants answers to why they led her there. Knowing that it's probably insane but her only hope she follows Jack through an amazing forest to a large Oak tree and her destiny.

What Shade never knew was that she's half Fae and is the only hope to prevent a War between the Fae that may spill into the Human Realm. With a band of Warriors she treks across Faery to obtain an artifact to save them but with good there's always bad and the opposing forces will stop at nothing to get her.

Really enjoyed this story and glad I started it with my days off so I could read it right through as it was so compelling.

The characters were a great mixture of fun, flirty, moody and mysterious. Some of the warriors you didn't learn much of but there's always room to grow with the sequels.
Shade herself is very funny. She's obviously scared and confused with not only learning she's Fae but that she's got some fairytale quest to go on. Her moody teenage tantrums were very amusing and relate-able. Great leading lady in my opinion.
Her sort of love interest i'll leave as a surprise as I thought it could possibly be between 3 of the Fae men during the story.

There were a few editing errors but nothing major. Glad I got the novelette aswell so I had something else to read when this ended. Suitable for all ages and very enjoyable. Will read the rest!

An engaging and impossible to put down tale that has all the components of a good fantasy story able to be read by the younger and older reader alike. It builds up personalities that are likable and not. It displays the frailties & strengths that lie in all of us.
    An excellent read.
I have now read all the books in the series and I was not disappointed and actually have a thirst for wanting to know what becomes of Shade, her sister, what future does the land of faerie have laid out with a bond now existing between the seelie and unseelie courts?
    Time always will tell.
