Yandel is half of the superstar reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel, who began performing during the late 1990s. He is also a best-selling solo artist who launched his solo career with 2003's Quien Contra Mi. Yandel surrendered his solo career for the duo's success as they exploded on radio, in stores, and on tour, winning countless Premio Lo Nuestro and Billboard Music awards along the way. The duo took home a Grammy for 2009's Los Extraterrestres in the Best Urban Latin Album category. W&Y amicably went on hiatus in 2013, the same year Yandel issued his sophomore outing, De Líder a Leyenda. It went to number one on the Latin charts. He repeated the feat with 2015's Dangerous, which was certified triple-platinum. 2017's Update was also given multi-platinum certification. The same year W&Y's 2018 reunion album, Los Campeones del Pueblo: The Big Leagues, was released, Yandel issued The One. He followed it with 2020's platinum Quien Contra Mí 2. 2021's charting Dynasty was released in collaboration with Tainy. In March 2022, Wisin & Yandel announced La Ultima Mision, their final album together, and in 2023 Yandel issued the surprise LP Resistencia. Another collaboration, this time with Feid, appeared in 2024 as the Manifesting 20-05 EP, followed the same year by the full-length Elyte.
Born Llandel Veguilla Malavé on January 14, 1977, in Cayey, Puerto Rico, he and Wisin began performing as a duo in the late '90s (Yandel then billed himself "Llandel") and made their album debut in 2000 with Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio. They later made the jump to a major label in 2003 with Mi Vida...My Life, their first for Universal subsidiary Machete Music. Yandel issued his debut solo offering, Quien Contra Mí, in 2004, but his focus remained on his partnership with Wisin. Pa'l Mundo then catapulted them to mainstream success in 2005. Subsequently, Wisin & Yandel established their own label, WY Records, and presented an affiliate group, Los Vaqueros, whose self-titled debut landed in the Top Ten, followed by 2007's Wisin vs. Yandel: Los Extraterrestres, which hit the top spot on the U.S. Latin Albums chart and sold over a million copies worldwide.
Combined with their highly successful touring show, the duo proved nearly unbeatable as a force in reggaeton. Arriving in 2008, Wisin & Yandel Presentan: La Mente Maestra also hit number one on the U.S. Latin and Mexican albums charts, and was certified platinum in both countries. Their Midas touch continued with 2009's Revolución: Evolucion, which sold over three million copies globally, and 2011's Los Vaqueros: El Regreso, which was their fourth straight U.S. Latin album chart-topper. It also claimed the number one entry in Mexico. The duo toured the Americas relentlessly. After 2012's chart-topping Líderes, Wisin & Yandel toured and coached with the reality show La Voz Mexico, then went on an official hiatus in 2013. The split, though shocking to the music press and fans, was not hostile. Each man claimed he had records to make apart from his work in the duo and that they would work together again.
Yandel's sophomore set, De Líder a Leyenda, featured guest appearances by J Alvarez, Daddy Yankee, and Don Omar. The 16-song set placed number one on the Latin Albums and Latin Rhythms charts and was certified gold. A single from this album, "Hasta Abajo," was used as the theme song for Univision's Nuestra Belleza Latina beauty pageant. Yandel released several singles and remixes from the album, toured, and made guest appearances on other performers' recordings. He re-entered the studio near the end of 2014 and issued no less than five singles in 2015, including "Encantadora," which landed in the Top 20 on numerous charts. The album Dangerous was released in early December. It featured guest spots by Shaggy, Alex Sensation, Lil Jon, and French Montana and topped the Latin Albums chart. Yandel also performed at the Cotto-Canelo fight, making him the first Latino ever to perform during an HBO pay-per-view event. In 2017, he returned with his fourth studio album, #Update, featuring the single "Mi Religión." The album once again showcased a handful of guest spots, including collaborations with J Balvin, Ozuna, Plan B, Wisin, and others. Yandel returned in 2019 with a new studio LP, the aptly named One; it did not include collaborations.
In the summer of 2020, Yandel issued Quién Contra Mi 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 2003 similarly titled debut album. Its 22 songs include collaborations with J Balvin, Ozuna, Anuel AA, Natti Natasha, and Nicky Jam. Its advance single, "No Te Vayas," was certified platinum before its release, while the long-player debuted at number three on the Top 200. The following year, Yandel and producer/composer/rapper Tainy issued the collaborative nine-track digital EP Dynasty.
In March 2022, Wisin & Yandel announced the September release of La Ultima Mision, their final album; it was followed by an international farewell tour. 2023 saw Yandel celebrate his birthday with the surprise 17-track LP Resistencia, which featured collaborations with Wisin, Maluma, and Young Miko. It hit number 12 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. In April 2024, Yandel teamed up with Feid on the joint EP Manifesting 20-05. Also, in October 2024, he delivered the full-length Elyte, once again blending classic reggaetón with contemporary trap, hip-hop, and electronic dance grooves. Featured on the album were guest appearances by Tego Calderón, Farruko, J Balvin, Myke Towers, and others. It cracked the Top 40 of Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. ~ Jason Birchmeier & Thom Jurek
Farruko is a best-selling reggaeton and Latin pop singer/rapper from Puerto Rico. Since delivering his Latin Grammy-nominated 2010 debut album, El Talento del Bloque, he has released more than 160 singles solo or in collaboration with a who's-who of Latin pop superstars, including Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Natti Natasha, Karol G, and Bad Bunny. His videos have registered hundreds of millions of views (2016's "Chillax" featuring Ky-Mani Marley garnered more than 750 million on its own). Equipped with a smooth high baritone voice, he is equally adept at singing reggaeton, merengue, bachata, pop, Latin dance, and reggae. His third album, Farruko Presenta: Los Menores, was his first to crack the Top Five, while 2015's Visionary reached number one. Two years later, his single "Krippy Kush" and its remix featuring Ocasio, Rvssian, Nicki Minaj, and 21 Savage peaked inside the Top Ten twice, propelling his smash TrapXficante album to number three. 2019's Gangalee topped the Latin streaming list and went to number two at Top Latin Albums; it remained on the chart for two years. Following his soundtrack to the 2019 HBO docuseries En Letra de Otro, Farruko again topped the Latin Albums chart with 2021's La 167, featuring the hit "Pepas." The EP Cvrbon Vrmor (C_DE: G_D.O.N.) arrived in 2024.
Farruko's given name is Carlos Efren Reyes, and he was born in Bayamón in 1991. At the age of 16, he began to post songs under his stage name to MySpace. His first single, "Sexo Fuera del Planeta," gained him thousands of followers, and from there he explored the potential of other social media networks. Due to his massive success on the Internet, he came to the attention of Puerto Rican radio and music industry executives, who enlisted his vocal talents for other artists.
Farruko's debut album, El Talento del Bloque, appeared when he was 18. It was released by Siente Music and distributed by Universal. Most of its 13 songs were self-penned. The set became an almost-instant hit, and several singles followed from it. Some of the record's highlights included collaborative tunes such as "Su Hija Me Gusta" with José Feliciano, "Ella No Es Fácil" with Cosculluela, and "Traime a Tu Amiga" with Arcángel and Julio Voltio. Farruko also issued the non-album smash "Pa' Romper la Discoteca" with Daddy Yankee and Yomo. In 2012, he released his sophomore effort, TMPR: The Most Powerful Rookie. Its first smash single was "Feel the Rhythm" ("Siente el Ritmo"), though it was one of five. As a whole, the set demonstrated that Farruko was as comfortable in electro and pop circles as he was in reggaeton; it was nominated for a Latin Grammy.
After touring throughout Latin America and the United States and establishing large fan bases in locales such as Venezuela and Colombia, Farruko returned to recording in 2014. Farruko Presenta Los Menores was released in late October of that year. A week after its release, it topped the Latin Albums chart. Among the notable collaborations are "Salgo" with Arcángel, Ñengo Flow, D. Ozi, and Genio y Kelmitt; "Bebe Conmigo" with J Balvin; and "Interesada" with Luigi 21+. He won the Premios Juventud for the song "6 AM" with J Balvin and Latin Grammy Awards for Best Urban Performance and Best Urban Song in 2015. In February of that year, he released "Lejos de Aquí," a remix with Yandel. In June, he was Alejandra Guzmán's surprise duet partner on her first urban single, "Adios." In July, he issued the pre-release track "Sunset" (featuring Shaggy and Nicky Jam), which garnered the top spot on various Latin airplay charts. In August, Farruko issued The Ones, a compilation of his charting singles and collaborations; it was a teaser for his next studio effort, Visionary, which appeared in late October. Pre-order excitement for the album propelled it to debut at number one on several Latin album charts; it remained there for several weeks after release. In 2017, he returned with his sixth studio album, TrapXficante. As its title suggested, the artist put his money on the fusion of reggaeton and urban pop with the second generation of Latin trap; the latter he considered still in its infancy, making some commercial inroads but still far from its future force as the face of commercial mainstream Latinx pop -- despite its outlaw ties. He openly desired being the face of that future, and drew on a host of new-generation Latin trap artists as collaborators including Frank Miami, Sharo Torres, Rome, Mambo Kingz, DJ Luian, Maffio, Lil Geniuz, Bad Bunny, and Ladkani. The album was issued in September as Farruko undertook the U.S. leg of his global TrapXficante tour.
In the years that followed, he hopped onto a slew of singles and remixes with the likes of J Balvin, Pedro Capó, Nicky Jam, Zion & Lennox, and Alicia Keys. In the midst of this activity, Farruko was arrested in Puerto Rico in April 2018, which put him under house arrest. During that time, he recorded another album, his eighth overall, titled Gangalee. The set was issued in April 2019 and featured guests Anuel AA, Bad Bunny, and others. Later that year, he released En Letra de Otro, the soundtrack to the HBO Latino documentary-style music series special of the same name. Between its release and 2021, Farruko issued or collaborated on more than 50 singles. Several placed inside the Top Five, including "Krippy Kush," 2020's "La Toxica," and 2021's EDM- and guaracha-infused "Pepas," the latter of which appeared on the singer's full-length La 167. Also that year, he contributed the track "Rápido" to the F9: The Fast Saga soundtrack before releasing his contemplative 2022 single "Nazareno." A year later, he joined Marshmello for "Esta Vida," and he returned in 2024 with "Carbon Vrmor," the title track to his EP Cvrbon Vrmor (C_DE: G_D.O.N.). ~ Thom Jurek
Puerto Rico's Zion & Lennox are one of reggaeton's most recognizable duos. Debuting in the early 2000s, the pair rose from the underground with their first hit album, 2004's Motivando a la Yal. Steadily climbing the charts, they scored their first Billboard Latin number one and placement in the Billboard 200 with 2016's Motivan2, and they finished their second decade with an array of popular singles and collaborations. The duo issued their fourth album, El Sistema, in 2021, followed by a string of hit singles including "Wayo" (2022) and "Para Siempre" (2023).
Felix Ortiz (Zion) and Gabriel Pizzaro (Lennox) grew up as neighbors in Carolina, Puerto Rico. Discovering their shared interest in hip-hop, rap, and dancehall, Ortiz and Pizzaro began collaborating, and in the days of reggaeton's emergence found themselves increasingly drawn to the new genre, finding it wide open and electric with potential. It was not long before the pair were offered opportunities to record, which opened doors to the compilation world, a common proving ground for new artists. The inclusion of their material on important compilations like Blin Blin, Vol. 1 and Mas Flow earned Zion & Lennox name recognition all over the reggaeton-listening world. "Te Hago el Amor" became an immediate hit across Puerto Rico and the U.S.
In 2004, after three years of building their fan base and an excellent reputation by delivering guest spots and compilation records, Zion & Lennox released their first full-length album, Motivando a la Yal. It featured the work of renowned producers Luny Tunes, Noriega, Nelly, and Eliel, some of the most visible names in reggaeton. The record hit the charts with force, and Zion & Lennox toured all over the Americas, performing before large audiences. The compilation Los Verdaderos appeared in 2010 and landed at number two on the Latin Albums chart. After more touring, Ortiz started his own record label, Baby Records, for which he is the flagship act and CEO. Lennox continued to make guest appearances and collaborate with important genre artists.
Although further releases appeared from the popular duo, they remained apart publicly due to a dispute with their manager. They finally extricated themselves from the relationship in 2015, and signed to WEA Latina. Motivan2, their label debut, was issued the following year. It included guest spots from Nicky Jam, Farruko, R. Kelly, and Maluma, debuting at number one on the Latin Albums chart. The multi-platinum single "Otra Vez" featuring J Balvin rose to number five on the U.S. Latin Singles chart, their highest placement to date. In 2018 they issued a number of singles, including "No Es Justo" with J Balvin, "Hola," and "La Player (Bandolera)," which became a hit in Spain. 2019 saw a variety of collaborations including "San Pedro" with Sharlene, "Money Maker" with Tara McDonald, and "Guayo" with Anuel AA and Haze. More songs followed in 2020, including "Dulcecitos" with Piso 21, "All Night," and "Te Mueves" with Natti Natasha. Led by the hit single "Loco" (with Justin Quiles and Chimbala), the 2021 full-length El Sistema capped Zion & Lennox's first two decades together. The duo continued releasing singles in 2022 ("Tus Labios" and "Brisa") and 2023 ("Passa Passa Passa" and "Para Siempre"). ~ Evan C. Gutierrez
