Editorial Reviews

2014 release, the first-ever holiday album from the R&B legends. Produced by Philip Bailey & Myron McKinley, HOLIDAY is Earth, Wind & Fire's 21st studio album and second for Legacy Recordings. HOLIDAY is a spirited celebration of the holiday season, bringing together brand new recordings of seasonal standards ('Winter Wonderland,' 'The Little Drummer Boy,' 'Sleigh Ride,' 'Jingle Bell Rock'), beloved carols ('Joy to the World,' 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful,' 'What Child Is This?,' 'Away in a Manger,' 'The First Noel'), a traditional Japanese winter song ('Snow'), a modern day Christmas song ('Every Day Is Like Christmas') and future EWF classics: 'Happy Seasons' (inspired by 'Happy Feelin'), and 'December' (inspired by 'September') featuring original vocals from Maurice White.

Nice holiday music by one of my favorite groups.

Absolutely great Xmas album! Much-much better than the same from Jarreau (which I adore) or Take 6 (which I adore as well, but less than EWF))). No oversweet, no oversoft -- everything is perfect taste and full of uplifting energy, as always by Elements. Couple of self-covers (Happy Feeling and December aka September) are great and really fresh. Horn section is amazing!!!
In general -- recognizable EWF sound from the first ear.
P.S.Sorry my English, I'm from Russia. But I'm huge EWF fan since 80-s.

    Update:
Joy To The World -- outstanding gospel, excellently sung and arranged.

Happy Seasons -- Happy Feelings with some new gags as horn arrangement and rhythm brakes.

O Come All Ye Faithful -- beautifully sung carol with after-the-love-is-gone-like ending and great piano solo.

Winter Wonderland -- great disco tune, of course recall Boogie Wonderland.

What Child Is This -- a child of Fantasy))))

Away In a Manger -- back to 70-s EWF sound which I adore!

Drummer Boy -- simple but beautiful.

Everyday Is Christmas -- Chicago blues stylish song, very tasty.

The First Noel -- something "family-sounding" Christmas carol. Very EWF-like.

Sleigh Ride -- recall of September, genuine Elements!

Snow -- traditional Japanese winter song, soft and beauuuuuuuuutiful)))))))) (IMHO)

Jingle Bell Rock -- simple made and performed, perfect song for sing along in front of Christmas tree)))))

December -- September as it is, overdubbed with lyrics and mr.Maurice White voice from original record.

In sum -- would give 6 stars if possible)))

EWF are handing out the presents and I'm loving it . . . 13 fantastic holiday tunes that are totally reworking the familiar refrains into dazzling pieces emboldened by what EWF does best - groove, funk, soul, dance and most important, hooks! While there are traditional elements to this CD EWF is taking these songs to a whole new level - check out the amazing Winter Wonderland, O Come All Ye Faithfiul, What Child Is This, Joy To The World - all are masterful reinterpretations with the EWF signature stamp. Winter Wonderland is my favourite, not what I was expecting but a truly upbeat dance track with hooks galore. Special mention also to Jingle Bell Rock, December, Sleigh Ride for igniting the holiday spirit! I have heard lots of Xmas CDs over the years but this is a fantastic surprise. . . . 10 out of 10 guys! PS: The unimaginative CD cover is a bit of a letdown and does not do this excellent project justice.

I've been a fan of Earth, Wind & Fire ever since That's the Way of the World was released back in 1975, and am thrilled they recorded this CD. Love hearing Christmas/holiday songs with those great EWF horns, vocal arrangements and rhythms!

    Some track-by-track thoughts:
    1. Joy to the World has a definite gospel flavor and is a great remake of a classic Christmas song. There's a lot of fun here.
    2. Happy Seasons is a nice remake and interpretation of Happy Feelin' (from That's the Way of the World). Whenever a song writer/group remakes a song of their own it seems like questions about which one is better. Although I miss Maurice White's vocals at the end of the original recording, I think this is a more interesting version of the original song.
    3. O Come All Ye Faithful starts a bit weakly (the electric rhythm guitar part isn't very tight and sounds pretty raw), but once they get to 1:20 and Philip Bailey moves to falsetto, the production kicks in and it starts to feel much more comfortable. From 2:36 to the end it's a nice vamp on the phrase "adore him" along with those great EWF horns.
    4. Winter Wonderland is a pure EWF arrangement of this classic song with the addition of female background vocals similar to EWF's work with The Emotions on "Boogie Wonderland". Cool.
    5. What Child is This? Starts with a lovely string intro that makes you wonder if it's going to be a mellow number, but at :33 seconds in EWF rhythm and horns kick-in with a "Fantasy" groove. Great EWF interpretation of this song.
    6. Away in a Manger comes across like one of the classic EWF ballads with Bailey effortlessly switching between his amazing falsetto and regular singing voice.
    7. The Little Drummer Boy is the one song on the CD that caused me to rate the album at 4 stars instead of 5. The arrangement, built around on an African-rhythmic groove, is pretty cool. The unpleasant surprise is that the lead vocal is noticeably flat in a few places.
    8. Everyday is Like Christmas is a new song to me. Not sure what the history of the song is, but it's an upbeat, jazzy love song that works well. (This song and #11 are the least "classic EWF" sounded cuts on the CD.)
    9. The First Noel is a very enjoyable remake of a Christmas classic song with an EWF/Brazilian interpretation.
    10. Sleigh Ride is also an enjoyable remake of a Christmas classic song. The lead vocal part seems a little pitchy and some of the key transitions (at :54 and 2:09) are a little awkward but otherwise it's nicely done.
    11. Snow is another song that, like "Everyday is Like Christmas", I wasn't familiar with until hearing it on this CD. Apparently it's a traditional Japanese winter song. Although it doesn't sound like a classic EWF tune, I like it and think it creates a nice shift in the mood on the CD. Very playful and childlike.
    12. Jingle Bell Rock is a terrific remake of another classic Christmas song. Great job making it EWF style!
    13. December is "September" with a slight change in the lyrics (i.e., September is changed to December). Some people will love it; some will struggle with trying not to hear "September" when he's singing "December". My daughter falls in the first category and I fall in the second. Still, it's a great song and a fun interpretation.

If you like classic EWF you'll want to get this. It's impossible not to miss Maurice White's vocals but Philip, Verdine and Ralph do a great job giving Christmas an EWF groove.

Fantastic Christmas CD, and EWF Fix! I really think they hit on something new here, we need more Christmas songs done better like this. An amazing quality recording (sounded like they were in my house), with huge talent at the mics, instruments played, and at the mixing board. I have not cranked my stereo system in a while, but I just kept needing to turn up the volume, too joyously uplifting (I’m dancing to it here!), to not be immersed in, an absolute treat for the ears and the heart. Please, share playing this with others, it will make the holiday season even brighter!

This is a high energy Christmas album in true EWF style. My favorite is Every Day is Like Christmas. There is only one EWF! Took too many years to record a Christmas album. It was worth the wait. I can see this becoming a favorite for many years to come. Not a traditional Christmas album. This is their take on it and present in true EWF fashion. I want to go to a concert in December to see them perform the songs. Maybe a DVD of a Christmas concert? Could we hope?

Never knew this existed until I happened upon it by chance. I've always loved EW&F and they put their own special spin on standard holiday fare making it unique and thoroughly enjoyable. If you are an EW&F fan or even a lover of Christmas music, I believe you'll embrace this album and make it one of your annual Christmas traditions.

5.0 out of 5 stars BIANCO NATALE, IN VERSIONE SOUL
Reviewed in Italy on November 24, 2015

This is a Christmas CD first and foremost. So it's a bit different to other EWF CDs, some may be disappointed with that. Personally I loved it, some of the arrangements are excellent, especially 'What Child is This'. It is probably the best and most original Xmas CD available.
