QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q. What inspired this book?
Mike: I was a professor of writing for four years at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix campus. I fell in love with the Caribbean. It truly is American paradise. I have always loved a good mystery, especially one with never-ending twists, turns, and surprises. Local color is important to me, so I saw that placing a mystery on the romantic island of St. Croix was a win-win situation for me, since I am like a reader when I write, never quite knowing what will happen next.
Q. How would you most like readers to respond to this book?
Mike: I would like my readers to sit back and enjoy the suspense surrounding Cuff and Rosie. I would like them to root for these two good people as they resolve to work out the kinks in their relationship.
Q. While creating your book, what was one of the most surprising things you learned?
Mike: I actually found myself falling in love with the character Rosie, Cuff's girl. She is sexy, independent, feisty, and strong. No one is going to ever get the better of her either verbally or physically. I thoroughly enjoyed creating the repartee between her and Cuff.

Michael Meyer is the author of mysteries, thrillers, humorous fiction, and non-fiction: Love and romance, laughter and tears, thrills and fears.
He has resided in and has visited many places in the world, all of which have contributed in some way to his own published writing. He has literally traveled throughout the world, on numerous occasions. He has lived in Finland, Germany, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He gained the wanderlust to see the world, to experience other cultures, at an early age, and this desire has never left him. If anything, it has only gained in intensity as he has aged.
Among the many unique things that have happened to him in his world travels, he has walked the streets of Istanbul with a detective, searching for a pickpocket who got him good. He has ridden on the back of a motorcycle in Tehran while the driver, who spoke not one word of English, pointed out all the sights to him. He has wrestled an Iranian soldier who tried to break into his hotel room in Tehran. He has had the paint completely stripped from his car as he drove across Saudi Arabia in a sandstorm. He has stood on the stage of a busy nightclub in Tokyo, singing "She'll be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes" to an audience feeling no pain from the Sake they were drinking. He has been chased by a family of mongooses (yes, that is the correct spelling) on the idyllic Caribbean island of St. Croix. And that is just the beginning of his long list of worldly adventures.
As a recent retiree from a forty-year career as a professor of writing, he now lives in Southern California wine country with his wife, Kitty, and their two adorable rescue cats.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2013I'm glad I got this book on my kindle for a very cheap price. The people that rated this book 5 stars had to have been the author's family. It started out as a pretty good idea for a story, but went very quickly downhill as the author tried to wrap it up. Many pages were spent on descriptions about the island, the sea, the birds...in fact the sugar birds were described exactly the same way in two different parts of the book. However as we get to the end it is wrapped up in such a quick, confusing way. There are 2 endings, the happy one and the dark one. You can read the happy one then skip ahead toward the end of the dark one and get the rest of the story. Both endings are the same except for a few other chapters for ending the story "darkly". Stupidly is more like it. And the editing....."She was as quiet as a "moose"? Please. I should have known what I was in for as all of the chapters at the beginning of the book ended with "The deadly eyes of St. Croix" which made me start to laugh about the 4th chapter. Skip this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2012I am so glad that I read this book and I will try to tell you why without giving away any spoilers. First of all, let me tell you that I borrowed the book from Amazon Prime/Kindle. (That was an experience for an old lady not technically inclined, but Amazon support is terrific and helped me through the first time process!)
Deadly Eyes was one of the best thought out books and offered so many twists and turns...the suspense was incredible! When I first sat down to enjoy and savor this mystery suspense novel, it took me back to the 40's and 50's and I could literally hear the voice of Darren McGavin narrating the read in my head. I liked that, as it used to be all the copper shows were narrated in similar style. The characters were real, and I really enjoyed the character of James Cuff. He was smart and trusted his senses but had no clue who was out to get him and it indeed was a perfect plan to destroy a life! I liked his honesty with the women he was involved with. I loved the plot line and the fact that for once, I hadn't figured the ending of the story! As a mystery suspense novel this book was out of the ball park EXCELLENT!!! oodles of suspense...a dash of horror and a mystery right up to the end! Mystery suspense just doesn't get any better than this!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2015Up front, Mr. Meyer has my respect. Anyone can write a critical review of a book, not everyone can write a novel. Hopefully all my comments are useful in your writing career.
That said, this novel represents the down side of self-publishing.
Any novel that takes place in the Caribbean is going to interest me. Sadly, I've been disappointed more often than not. Deadly Eyes was disappointing.
I knew from the first few pages that I wasn't reading a good novel, but I kept going, hoping it would get better. Obviously, this is a self-published (Createspace) book, and like a lot of self-published novels, this one could have benefited from an unbiased editor and several rounds of revision.
This novel suffers from too much exposition. It's like the author took a vacation to St. Croix and was inspired to write a novel based on his vacation. For instance, in the opening pages, as we are introduced to the main character and his would-be employer, the author takes time out to explain how there are day charters out to Buck Island where tourists are treated to a BBQ and much rum. That's interesting...I were reading a travel guide.
Only a few paragraphs later, we are treated to another data-dump that explains the colorful history of the names estates on the island. We even get a bit about the sugar plantations.
Keep in mind, this is all within a few minutes of the opening words.
A good editor or beta reader worth their salt would have pointed this out to the author as completely unnecessary or at the very least, out of place.
Additionally, right off the bat, I found both characters I was introduced to as making illogical decisions or doing illogical choices. The first is that the man who hires Cuff approaches him in the first place. His house is being "cased" and he wants someone to guard it. He dismisses law enforcement with a completely absurd reason and Cuff completely buys it.
But why was he approached? Who is Cuff that some random guy would approach him to guard his house? What credentials does he own that makes him an expert in security? Apparently, according to "Rosie," Cuff punched a guy who tried to steal a purse...or something like that. Oh, and he has a chiseled jaw and a good physique.
As for Cuff. Who accepts to play security guard overnight for $150? Even if you're hurting for money (which he obviously was not) why would you get conned into this?
The rest of the novel was full of examples like this. Characters doing things that left me scratching my head, out of place data-dumps, and cliched descriptions.
At some point, you've either established that St. Croix is beautiful and exotic or you haven't. Constantly reminding the reader of this deflates the purpose.
Additionally, there were flaws with the writing, for instance, there were several places with dialogue that went like this.
"No guns," I said.
Why is that bad? The rest of the book is in 3rd person. I could forgive this once as maybe a misplaced quotation marks, but it makes me believe Cuff was written in the first person and then changed. Perhaps the author saw himself as the hero?
Overall, I did not really enjoy this novel. I felt like I was reading the first draft that had received some token amount of self-editing.
As a general comment on self-published work...more than traditionally-published authors, they need a professional editor or at least several qualified beta-readers (qualified meaning, someone with a degree in English for example). Self-published work takes a big hit for not being quality material. There are some diamonds in the rough out there, but too many authors are just so eager to see their work in print that they rush out with an unfinished or poorly conceived product.
I believe this novel had promise. I believe the author felt his work was good. He just needed someone to tell him it wasn't good, to go back and write another draft. It's a shame.
Hopefully the rest of your works are improved. Good luck.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2013I like the idea of two endings. But the style of the endings didn't seem to match the style of the writing. Both endings ended rather abruptly. Its as though the artist was in a hurry to finish. The endings themselves aren't bad per se...their styles just conflicts with the style of the book as a whole. Which kind of made the endings a bit far-fetched. Everything in the book was so detailed and leading up to revealing the Deadly Eyes of the island. These Deadly Eyes appeared at the end & the first ending...the eyes didn't seem so Deadly...just a pissed off person with an axe to grind. The 2nd ending came out of left field and not believable at all. I'm not saying it couldn't happen...it just didn't seem realistic based on the flow of the book. It was an ok book. I'm not disappointed to have read it. I'll read almost any modern-day crime lit set in a tropical paradise.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad
This is a very poor book, horrendous character generalisations coupled with meaningless writing leave a mixture of disbelief and amazement that this has actually been published. Only saving grace is that it was free. Has been deleted from my kindle as I never want to revisit this experience, a waste of your precious time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome alternate endings
This is one of those books that I really loved getting the opportunity to read. The locations were described well and the details given bit by bit to build the picture and suspense up and I struggled to put the book down.
I've already recommended it to some friends and family who like the genre and I read both of the endings that were provided. Yup, that's right. This book has two possible endings to read.
I think I prefered the first one as it was happier but it was a really interesting twist to have two alternatives. Great book and going on my favourites of the year list.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable and odd.
Initially I found the book interesting and well crafted, with great descriptions that evoked fantastic images of the island of st. croix. However I found the story too ridiculous and to be honest a disappointment. For those looking to buy the book I'd probably tell them not to bother, like I said initially a real page turner but for me, however that quickly changed to disbelief and quite a disheartening ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Ending What ???
I had not read a book by this author before and I don't think I will be reading another one. I was very excited with this book at first couldn't put it down but as is got towards the end what was that all about? Didn't really explain who the people where that took Lisa and what they were going to to do with her and what about Cuff could the author not have chosen a different ending for him.

4.0 out of 5 stars fast paced
Deadly Eyes murder/mystery/thriller, based on a virgin island called St Croix. We meet the main character James Cuffy aka Cuff. He's being set up for a series of murders while at the same time being followed by the so called `deadly eyes' they see everything!!
I found this book a real page turner I needed to know who was behind it and who would set Cuff up. This however you don't find out until at least half way through the book. Michael has two alternatives ending one slightly darker than the other, both which has great endings. Deadly Eyes is fast paced and enjoyable.
