Product description
RE-PRESS: CD ORIGINALLY RELEASED IN 2018
- Expanded edition of ‘Latin For Lovers’, a celebration of the finest romantic songs to come out of Latin America.
- Includes songs by the pioneer of bossa-nova – Antonio Carlos Jobim – whose music had proven extremely popular at the time for non-Latin artists like Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
- The complete album is included in both Stereo and Mono and a third bonus disc includes other Latin-influenced tracks from Doris Day’s recording career plus a compendium of A&B sides that were recorded and released between the ‘Latin For Lovers’ album and the end of her recording career with Columbia in 1967.
Throughout ‘Latin For Lovers’, Doris delivers a supremely evocative and intimate vocal performance, her voice cushioned on a sensuous blend of violins and guitars, with the darkly inviting tones of an alto flute in wonderful arrangements by Mort Gamson.
Featuring the soaring ‘Fly Me To The Moon’, originally written in 1954 as ‘In Other Words’, the foot-tapping ‘Dansero’, written by harmonica virtuoso and conductor, Richard Hayman and Doris’s urgent rendition of ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’, on which a trumpet makes the rhythm shine with all the more lustrous glow! Doris’s celebrated version of this Latin classic enjoyed a new wave of popularity in the early 1990s in its inclusion by film director Baz Lurhmann in his romantic comedy hit film Strictly Ballroom.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2020I bought this cd for a relative who is a life-long fan of Doris Day and she was absolutely delighted with it,she said there were songs on it she hadn't heard before.and with 3 cd's it was excellent value.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2020One of the greatest chillout albums ever recorded. Doris Day's voice has never sounded so cool and sensuous. Of course, she was one of the greatest singers who ever lived, but this is pure perfection.
Magnificent.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2020Liked the smooth Latin beat and the lovely voice of Doris Day singing well known standards , just the CD to relax to
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2019Just three brilliant cds what’s not to like
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2018Although its decades since Doris Day pursued an active career, she remains an icon with her films and albums still able to command an audience – albeit via DVD or television and of course radio for her many hits cherished by record buyers during the Forties, Fifties and even Sixties.
This splendid three-disc set is mainly dominated by her final album, LATIN FOR LOVERS (the nostalgic SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY - a salute to big-band songs of the Forties was also released in 1965 and concluded her contract with Columbia Records). If anything else the bossa nova style was the very antithesis of the Sixties rock and the domination by The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the other groups who saturated the music market; changing forever the tastes of younger generations.
Along with Sinatra, the gentle Brazilian rhythms and imported melodies extended to well-known standards and attracted similarly warm album collections by Eydie Gorme, Dean Martin, Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, Mel Torme, June Christy and Perry Como to name just a few. Therefore, Doris was in great company and provided with conductor/arranger Mort Garson’s varied Latin rhythms, she raised the temperature from cool to hot via popular song imports QUIET NIGHTS OF QUIET STARS, MEDITATION, DANSERO and HOW INSENSITIVE plus the established Latin-tempo favourites - BE MINE TONIGHT and POR FAVOR - yet leaving space for the inclusion of the home-grown FLY ME TO THE MOON and pop favourite OUR DAY WILL COME expressed with the warm sensual intimacy only Doris could muster. If the album initially got lost in the crowd of Latin-flavoured projects indicated by singers above, it found a new level of artistic success when the Day version of PERHAPS, PERHAPS, PERHAPS was featured on the soundtrack of the Australian movie STRICTLY BALLROOM (1992) and along with the film’s popularity, enabled the single to reach the UK music charts as Doris’ final hit and of course direct attention back to its original album source.
This appropriately pitched de-luxe release includes the mono and stereo versions of LATIN FOR LOVERS plus a third disc devoted to many of the rare singles Doris recorded around the time of the album’s release so their inclusion is extra impetus to purchase with the two versions of WHATEVER WILL BE WILL BE -1956/1964 book-ending the selections.
Nicely packaged within a cardboard folder are mini-version LP sleeves individually containing the CD’s with original
graphics plus some new cover photographs. The accompanying informative twenty-four page booklet is headed by a welcome introduction by Doris Day, original album notes and updated coverage by Day expert Stephen Munns plus song credits etc; and there are quotes from the great and good Tony Bennett, Olivia Newton John and Paul McCartney to confirm this box- set as a wonderful tribute to the artistic longevity and magic of Doris Day and the thrilling power of one of her most iconic albums.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 November 2018Best Sounding Version of this Album and love that they included the mono version as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music over cocktails.
I love Doris Day style for this CD. Beautiful voice! Great to listen to as you ready a good book. Even better if you and your partner want to share a romantic evening over dinner and cocktails. Also, great slow dancing music. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice collection
Latin albums were the craze in the early 60's, and it's nice to finally have Doris Day's on cd. Her voice is perfectly suited to this style.
