Consensus: Part 1 - Citizen Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 133 ratings

In Esh, truth is determined by a public opinion network. Social rating is the currency. Fitting in … essential. Yet adopted sixteen-year-old RENA WAITE can’t help challenging the flawed mindset of her family and friends. She sees things differently. Sometimes literally; the only part of her early childhood she remembers are visions of mountains and a forest—things that don't exist in her urban environment of concentrically divided economic classes, surrounded by an endless wasteland of fog and freezing rain.

When Rena saves her friends’ lives during a mugging, a report of the incident ruins the ratings of everyone associated with her. The only solution is to perform her civic duties. Go to school. Vote on issues. Contribute her opinions to society. And above all, meet regularly with her counselor to understand the source of her nonconformist behavior and violent instincts. Little does she know that her simple act of self-defense has attracted the suspicion of a covert policing agency as well as the interest of a subversive faction.

And those visions? She’ll soon learn they’re intimately linked to Esh’s forgotten history and the secret war raging beneath the surface of her polite community.

About the Author

The third of four children and an introvert from the start, Jason Tesar grew up as an imaginative "middle child" who enjoyed the make-believe world as much as the real one, possibly more. From adolescence to adulthood, his imagination fed itself on a diet of books, movies, and art, all the while growing and maturing-waiting for its opportunity. In late 1998, Jason made his first attempt at writing, managing to complete a whole scene before returning once again to reality. A year and a half later, a spontaneous night-time conversation with his wife encouraged him to take his writing seriously and to keep on dreaming. Over the next seven years, Jason carved time out of the real world to live in an imaginary one of epic fantasy, science-fiction, and military/political conflict. The fruits of this labor would later become the first three books of the bestselling AWAKENED series. Due to the incredible support of readers from around the world, Jason continued his trajectory into make-believe, jumping from stable employment in the micro-electronics industry into the mysterious abyss of full-time writing. Living in Colorado with his beautiful wife and two children, Jason now spends the majority of his time fusing the best parts of his favorite genres into stories of internal struggle and triumph, friendship, betrayal, political alliances, and military conflict.

Eleven novels and one short story later, Jason’s imagination is just getting started. But the challenges and responsibilities of the real-world are gaining strength, trying to pull him back.

The whole series should have been one book. The story is fantastic and I loved all of them but they are really short. KindleUnlimited made me feel good enough about this to give it a four but if I had to purchase all five, it would have been a 2.5. Now to the review:

I loved the whole series and was very happy I read them. I loved the way Rena, the main character, worked through her thoughts. It was a good way to introduce her and her whole world. Rena was a lot like myself, unable to fit in no matter how she tries. So I guess I loved it because it felt like something I was easily able to relate to, except she is female of course.

Hard to go into too much detail without spoilers so this is where I end it. It applies to the whole series since I was able to read the whole series in a couple of days, it really would be better as one book.

If agreement is truth then I can agree that this is an amazing book. I was instantly captivated by Jason's newest sci-fi addition 'Consensus'. There was no boring back story to leave you wondering when or if something was going to happen. Instead you're thrown right into the action and the background details are mixed in with the thrilling plot when needed.

I was immediately pulled into the story alongside all the characters as the plot unfolded and before I knew it the book was over. I soon found myself contemplating things like, what Esh really is and if outliers are actually bad people.

I'll be eagerly anticipating the next book in this series. Now what to do until then...?

I started reading this book because I enjoy book series . . . and from the brief overview/introduction, I decided to give it a try (read). I have found it well written and engaging. I enjoy how Mr. Tesar describes and develops his characters - and the twists and turns in the storyline. I'm looking forward to starting Part 2 very soon!

Except for it's shortness, which I understand is to sell more books for the author, Consensus:Citizen is a well written part 1 of a story you want to be more, which I am sure it will be in the coming episodes. Jason Tesar is an extremely talented author trying to make headway into the overwhelming deluge of post apocalyptic literature that is flooding the ebook culture. I do want more, I just don't like the pretense of chopping up a full novel into 5 parts in order to generate sales. This is not Tesar's fault, it's how books are in the internet world, yes it was free so I got a real bargain, and I will buy the entire series because of the depth of character and skillful abilities of Mr. Tesar, I just don't like to be teased.

Jason Tesar's work is and, in my opinion, always has been intriguing and interesting. In this beginning of a new series he explores the characteristics and implications of a different way of approaching the concept of how a society is organized and operates. The consequences of a society based on consensus, particularly of agreement, are thought provoking, yet there is enough to make the read enjoyable. I look forward to more in the series.

As in other series from Jason Tesar, this first part totally caught me within a few pages. The way the society is ploted and some details are explained and revealed throughout the book while keeping the reader's interest all along is just great. I finished it in a couple hours and immediately got the second part. Great work!

The starting of the book was very slow Nothing like the other 2 series I read. The eyes open and wondering stars. It's starting now to get a little bit of energy To make me wanna read more.I think there's a lot to know about Rena And I'm anxious to find out I've already bought the whole series Of consensus.I'm not going to leave another review until I finish all the books.I have a feeling it's going to get more interesting.I like books that make you take attention And crave more I'm hoping this book will start doing this. The other 2 series kept me on the edge of my chair. I am still waiting for books 8 and9 of the Eyes Open series.

Excellent story from one of my favourite authors. Couldn't put it down as it grabbed my imagination from the get go. Good dystopian read, without being cliche. I can easily see it as the next big movie saga.

I have read all of Jason Tesar's books listed on Amazon, and he never disappoints. Part one of the Consensus series starts a little slowly while setting the scene, but soon explodes into action and is just gripping for the rest of the series through many plot twists and turns. Excellent read.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Looking forward to getting to know the characters more on the next installment. We've been given just enough to keep us engaged in the story and make us think about the new world and the twists and turns that are coming. Not disappointed at all. Very well written again Jason Tesar.
