Combined Edition (The Awakened: Books One Through Three) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 444 ratings

**This combined edition contains the first three novels of the Awakened series: Awaken His Eyes, Paths of Destruction, and Hands To Make War.**

BOOK ONE: On a parallel earth, in the city of Bastul, Colonel Adair Lorus disappears while investigating the death of an informant, triggering a series of events which will tear his family apart and set in motion the resolution of an ancient struggle. Kael, sentenced to death after rising up against the cruel leadership of his new step-father, is rescued from prison and trained in the arts of war by a mystical order of clerics. Excelling in every aspect of his training, Kael inwardly struggles to give himself fully to the methods of his new family, or the god they worship. Maeryn, bitter over the disappearance of her husband and supposed execution of her son, fears for her life at the hands of her newly appointed husband. Finding comfort and purpose in her unborn child, she determines to undermine his authority by reaching out to an underground social movement known as the Resistance. After being forced from his home, Kael’s former mentor, Saba, uncovers a clue to Adair’s disappearance. Sensing a connection to his own forgotten past, Saba begins an investigation which leads to the discovery of a secret military organization operating within the Orudan Empire.

BOOK TWO: Returning to his home city of Bastul, Kael finds the Southern Territory of the Orudan Empire under invasion. As he races to unravel the secrecy of the enemy’s identity, he becomes entangled in a brutal conspiracy to gain control of the government. After years of collaboration with the Resistance, Maeryn coordinates the covert exodus of the entire slave population of Bastul. Along their treacherous journey to the capital city of Orud, she is faced with the pressures of leadership as she attempts to protect her daughter and ensure the survival of her companions. Saba, held captive by a mysterious military force, escapes after years of solitary confinement. Propelled by an elusive memory, he chases after the hope of rediscovering his past and learns that everyone’s future is in jeopardy. Finding himself in another world and thrust into the middle of a technologically advanced conflict, Adair struggles to make sense of his new environment and the soldiers who are protecting him.

BOOK THREE: After fighting his way back from a paralyzing defeat, Kael resolves to bring an end to the enemies of the Orudan Empire. Enlisting the help of his family and most-trusted friends, he faces off against an ancient evil and embraces his destiny. As Maeryn rises through the ranks to attain a command position within the Resistance, she learns of a conspiracy in her organization and realizes the enormous resources at her disposal. Determined to set things right, she seizes control and sets a new course for the movement. Reacquainting with his closest friends, Saba pieces together the identity and motive of the enemy. Bringing his vast knowledge to bear, he collaborates with Orud’s High Council to force the enemy into the open, while waiting to reveal a secret of his own. Working to establish communications with the mysterious organization protecting him, Adair sets in motion a plan that he hopes will enable him to return to his world—and his family.

In the first trilogy of his Amazon bestselling debut series, Jason Tesar launches an epic saga that will journey from earth’s mythological past to its post-apocalyptic future, blending the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, and military/political suspense.

About the Author

As the third of four children and an introvert from the start, Jason Tesar grew up as an imaginative "middle child" who enjoyed the make-believe world as much as the real one, possibly more.  From adolescence to adulthood, his imagination continued to feed itself on a diet of books, movies, and art, all the while growing and maturing--waiting for its opportunity. Then, during a procession of monotonous, physically laborious day-jobs, his imagination leaped into motion, bringing together characters and locations of a world that would someday come to life on the pages of a book. In late 1998, Jason made his first attempt at writing, managing to complete a whole scene before returning once again to reality. A year and a half later, a spontaneous night-time conversation with his wife encouraged him to take his writing seriously and to keep on dreaming. Over the next seven years, Jason carved time out of the real world to live in an imaginary one of epic fantasy, science-fiction, and military/political conflict. The fruits of this labor would later become the first three books of the bestselling AWAKENED series. Due to the overwhelming support of readers around the world, Jason has continued his trajectory into make-believe, recently jumping from stable employment in the micro-electronics industry into the mysterious abyss of full-time writing. Living in Colorado with his beautiful wife and two children, Jason now spends the majority of his time fusing the best parts of his favorite genres into stories of internal struggle and triumph, friendship, betrayal, political alliances, and military conflict. I started with the first book of The Awakened as a free book for my brand new Kindle (thanks girlfriend!). I read a chapter the first day, then read another chapter on the weekend, not finding myself with any reason to really engage myself in the book. I found myself home sick, and started it up again as it was within reach of my bed; after the fifth chapter I black out, and wake up a few hours later signing into my account to download the rest of the trilogy, which I finished by nightfall. It was a compelling story, and the simple language it uses makes it all the easier to plow through page after digital page.

The premise of the book is standard fantasy: a world where demons coexist with humans, and centers around a family that is tragically torn apart; not your high-fantasy orcs and goblins storming Hogwarts with the One Ring, but still in the same vein of ye olde-tyme heroes doing what olde-tyme heroes do. We follow their individual struggles and watch as they come so close to having a chance meeting, but finally they are reunited by fate to save the world. Along the way, a nice portrayal of an empire divided is shown, and I was happy to read about all the hustle and bustle of trade port life, for whatever reason (The Count of Monte Cristo also grabbed my attention this way; I guess I like boats and cities).

Though it is written with a greater story-arc in mind and does a good job of connecting those dots, it is obvious that it is written by a first-time published author, as many sections were over-burdened with trite descriptions. In most places, Jason Tesar helps to develop the world in peril, but in a few places, I found myself merely skimming and forcing myself to go back and reread a section laden with information never used again; a happy medium is yet to be found by this author, but I won't fault him for it, as most first works aren't perfectly polished. This seems to skew the balance a bit, as most of the first book is dedicated to protagonist Kael's training in every rice-eating detail, but then the climax of the third book -and entire series- is whittled to a few pages.

In the end, I was still satisfied by the way it turned out, albeit seeming a bit hurried in the final few chapters. I was left wondering about *SPOILER* Kael's father, who we see in three or four scenes, lost a different time or parallel dimension, which was never resolved. /*SPOILER* This made me think that there would be more books in the universe itself, which was a happy thought as I would like to see where Mr. Tesar can bring this. He may not be the next JK Rowlings, but he can probably secure a good base of fans if he keeps writing and continues to grow. Free was the perfect price for the first book/part, as it drew me in for making the purchase on the whole series; five bucks was also the proper price for some excellent fantasy fare. If Mr. Tesar can refine his writing skills and hit on some of the same high notes he managed in this series, I can see him justifying (and me paying) more for his content in the future.

All in all, try out the free first book, if you like it, just download the series and save yourself the trouble. If you don't like the first, you won't like the rest. For the enjoyment I got out of experiencing the trials of Kael and company, The Awakened deserves five stars, and I sincerely hope Mr. Tesar writes again.

I was looking for a sci-fi/fantasy type hybrid and happened upon this series because of its price. The first chapter was pretty intriguing and then the second chapter seemed a little dry to me. I am so glad I hung on until chapter 3 because it has become a great story with great characters. I really like that the heroes and heroines are not necessarily perfect and excellent at everything they do right from the start. Too often the main character(s) are the best fighters, the best strategists, etc. I was happy to see that that was not necessarily the case with all the characters. They might become great later but it seems to come legitimately.

I enjoyed that it was not overly detailed in every little aspect. Sometimes reading about the landscape or city or battle to the nth degree is boring. I want action, adventure, intrigue and a dash of romance at a fair pace. I felt the author kept the tempo going nicely. I bought this version because it has all three books in one. It was definitely worth the price for the size! I am almost done with the book and do not look forward to the wait for the next part of the story. Keep writing, Jason, because I will definitely keep reading!

If you're looking for sci-fi with shades of grey, so not read this series! Unfortunately, there seems to be this assumption (for lack of a better word) that a book needs at least a sprinkle of sex in order to be good, or to sell. I get it...live, sex, etc, are a very normal part of our lives...but if I already have a normal life, why would I look for it in my escape from reality?
Jason manages to weave in a brief, but lasting, love story here and there...in fact, this love story is an integral part of one of his main character's actions. He also throws in, without getting specific, a rape scene...again, necessary to a character's growth and development...but the rest of the books tell the story of a group of people, with emphasis on one character...however, this one character is extremely closely tied to the other main characters...
And, let's not forget a driving character who pops in and out, also very closely tied to the one character!!!
Confusing?? Only because I'm not naming names...
Definitely a series with reading...you have action...tons of it...with great descriptions to bring this world to life...
You have just enough romance to keep it from being solely a war book....
You have good people, who are human...complete with flaws...
    You have good vs evil...
You have.........well, just read it! You won't regret it!!
Now I'm off to start the next trilogy in this series!!

For me, "The Awakened" was a fully enjoyable, entertaining story. This vividly imagined, epic tale superbly blends the genres of fantasy, sci-fi and military suspense to create a fast-paced, detailed, vast adventure.

I loved the huge scope of time in this book. While the majority of the story takes place in a mythological, medieval-like past, we get glimpses of a parallel world in the future with a common, mysterious villain. As the story of the protagonist, Kael Lorus, unfolds from his boyhood to his twenties, the grand scale of the story becomes accessible and intimate as his journey is central to the major story-arc.

The detail and pacing in this novel were expertly balanced in my opinion. I've found in other novels these two traits can fight each other; the detail drags a story's pace down, or the fast pace leaves out story-enriching details. Tesar struck a nice balance to create a suspenseful page-turner with rich detail and quality character development. Yet he also leaves us with enough unknown so the mystery pulls us along in the plot.

The action, the characters, the imaginative land and intriguing antagonist(s) made this a truly engaging story that I did not want to end. I'm looking forward to reading more from Jason Tesar in the future!

I am really pleased I read these books. I cannot wait for the sequel to book four. I read all four in a week, could not put them down.
Everything else was neglected, even my husband! I found the storyline to be something so different from the usual.
Moving through various timelines was a strange experience at first, however the books would not be what they are without the timelines.

Really impressed with the author's work. It is not a slow read, however very descriptive at times, I tended to want to move quickly through the description of places and people, but it added to the novel in knowing the detail. I feel as though I have lost a friend in coming to an end of my reading and truly cannot wait for the next in the series.

Don't stop writing. I enjoyed the underlying message in the battles between good and evil and the portrayal of different worlds and conflicts and how they interlink to form one excellent tale.

Worth the read, I would and have recommended to most avid readers I know.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 13, 2018
I have had this on my kindle list for some time, I found the story line to be believable and enjoyed the writing style as well, the parallel world is not as advanced as our earth, with no machines or tech except items that you would find in our distant past.
I would of given this 5 stars except for some words or letters missing, this was a little annoying as it interrupts the flow of the book, but overall I enjoyed the characters who were well designed and believable, as was the world they live in as well.
The story does end on a little bit of a cliff hanger so be warned you may want to read the next books in the series to see what happens to the main characters????????.

As an avid reader of fantasy sify for many a long year I heartily recommend this book to all

Leading you into the fascinating lives of its characters and drawing you into the awakened world-capturing me from the first paragraph. It is well written with a living depth to the charàcters that left me feeling I knew them in real life.

The storyline concentrates on a young boy Kael, his family, and his passage and growth towards his destiny. Well structured and enriched with many a surprising change of direction, deepening understanding and unfolding new facets as the story developed, keeping me on the edge of my seat, just when things looked like they are calming down.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was coming to the last page and cant wait for Jason to continue this brilliant tale

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 15, 2013
This is a great read. I downloaded all three books when they were freely available and couldn't put them down. The books move at a good pace, and although the scenery is very well described, the author does not get bogged down in too much detail, but gives you enough so that you can picture the layout. The fight scenes are very well written and the entire trilogy reads like Lord of the Rings meets Kill Bill with the elements of a quest, adventure and sword play all rolled into one. Cannot wait for the fourth installment to see what further adventures lie in store for the main characters.

P.S Just downloaded Incarnation: Wandering Stars Volume One, which is the prequel to these books and can't wait to start it
