About the author

After working as a journalist for 25 years, writing real life stories, for the women’s magazines & national newspapers, I began teaching at the University of Sheffield - a job I love with all my heart.
Around the same time, I finished writing Women of Steel, after spending two years researching this incredible generation.
I’m currently writing a series of historical fiction books on this remarkable band of women, who sacrificed so much, by taking highly dangerous and physically relentless roles in the Sheffield steel factories, during WW2, to ‘do their bit’.
When I’m not teaching or writing, I have two amazing kids and a crazy cavapoo, who are all very apt at keeping me on my toes.
There’s not a day that goes by, when I don’t remind myself how lucky I am to get to this position.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 June 2023I could be put this book down. Michelle Rawlins realities how to get her readers into each character. The camaraderie between the Steel Girls is amazing . The way they all pull together to help each other out and to make life at the beginning of War a little bit more bearable for the people of Sheffield. I Love Betty's character, she has such inventive ideas to help others. Patty makes me laugh and always looks on the bright side, even in these difficult times. Nancy comes across as the mother figure in this book. Despite her worries about her husband, away in France, she is the voice of reason to several of the women. I do hope there will be more books in this series which will cover the Steel Girls throughout the war. I cannot wait to start the 3rd book, but there are 4 more years to go after this one ends. Please continue this amazing series Michelle
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2025Another fantastic read. Throughout the war years how love and respect helped people to live and work together making more friends daily with the women doing male jobs as there men went to war. Through making do and mending they could help each other out.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2023Mum is enjoying the book and indeed the whole series however, this book has a problem in that it hasn't been bound properly so the pages are falling out!! Has anyone else had a similar issue?
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 August 2022Yet again another fab read catching up with Patty, Nancy and Betty. Times are hard and the kind hearted ladies are thinking up ways to help others get through Christmas and bleak cold winter. Betty comes up with some ideas to help their new friend Daisy and also all the families of Sheffield. The book is left on a cliff hanger so I can’t wait for the next instalment from Vickers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2021I loved the first book in this series ,loved this one as well ,it was like re visiting old friends.
Can't believe how it ended though talk about leaving us on a knife edge lol .
Can't wait for the next book .
Great story telling Michelle xx
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 December 2021Absolutely brilliant book, I love this author, she paints the picture as well as writing the words and you can really feel like you were in the story with the women at the steel factory. I can't wait to read the next one, I have pre ordered it and would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading books about life in the UK in WW2
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2021Another good read, book 2 is just as good a read as 1st one. Following in the the lives of the steel girls at vickers. The girls despite their own worries help out the people with providing knitted clothes. Have to admit I didn't like the abrupt ending but looking forward to book 3
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2021I was a bit disappointed with this one. I absolutely adored Historical Fiction but I just feel like there wasn't much to this book. Not a lot happened throughout the book in my opinion. I did like the friendship between the girls and how they stepped up to help Daisy when she needed it. The cliff hanger at the end of the book does have me wanting to know what happens.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for the opportunity to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
I really enjoyed the first two books. Great characters and well written. It was very interesting to learn how women replaced men in the steel factories. I would definitely recommend.
