I saw this special last October on PBS' GREAT PERFORMANCES, and I was hooked enough to go to Target the next day and purchase the Cheek to Cheek (Deluxe Edition) CD, which has two bonus tracks not found on Amazon's Deluxe Edition. This is the DVD of the special, and it is fantastic. Tony and Gaga have great chemistry and are in top form. They do most of the songs from the CD - the only one missing is Tony's solo version of "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever" - and three that are not on the album; two Bennett solos, "The Lady's In Love With You" and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing," and Gaga's solo on Sonny & Cher's "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)." The jazz musicianship is first class, including Tony's own Quartet, The Brian Newman Quartet, The After Midnight Band, a full string orchestra, and soloists Chris Botti (trumpet) and David Mann (saxophone). The only slight drawback was the five showgirls, whom I found very distracting. With those giant Vegas-style headdresses on their heads, they did little more than walk around and seemed to get in the way. Using a few tappers, or some of The Radio City Rockettes, might have been a better choice.

The crowd at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater seemed to really enjoy themselves.

For Tony Bennett fans, this DVD is a must-have. For Lady Gaga fans, if you only know her from her pop songs and outrageous antics, you are in for a real treat.

I agree with what Tony said in a recent interview: why Lady Gaga wastes her time with contemporary pop songs, when she has such great jazz chops, is beyond me. Maybe Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta has finally grown up. If only Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and Ariana Grande could...

As I started watching this show and got through the first few numbers, I had to find out how old Tony Bennett was as he was crushing it! The show was in 2014 and Tony was 87. Just phenomenal control, phrasing and pitch, and knowing how most singers can’t begin to do justice to their catalogue once into their 80’s and should have stopped performing, Tony continues to amaze. What a treasure! And Lady Gaga, what a monster talent. I’ve been a fan for a while now and have known she is more than a pop singer, but this show highlights what a jazz talent she is. The two have a great chemistry and the sum of the parts is captivating. Highly recommended!

This production spent the money where it belonged: on the musicians and stage direction. Lady Gaga surprised me with her jazz chops (they talk about that) and Tony, of course is extraordinary here. No decline in his amazing talent is discernible whatsoever. The stage production is superb; there are no elaborate sets but whoever directed this knew his stuff. Every shot provides interest with an artistic flair. Lady Gaga poses brilliantly in marvelously designed costumes and sings better than any female I can think of. The timbre in her voice is outrageously good as is her intonation and phrasing. Moreover, their banter is never stilted. You get the impression they're both utterly impressed with each other and are loving this performance. It's simply an evening of standing ovations. This DVD provided the best evening of entertainment I've experienced in a long, long time. Do yourself a favor and grab this one.

At one time my boomer/60s generation looked at these American Songbook selections as very square and we still think no one is better than Dylan, The Beatles, Baez et. al. but did like a number of acts in the 70s up to the present time.
But in time this era became more attractive. These songs just have more feelings and better lyrics than what's on the current pop scene generally with some exceptions.
In fact the contemporary music I like best is retro: Nora Jones, Madellene Peyroux, Kat Edmondson or traditional like Allison Krause, Crooked Still, Sara Jarosc, Patsy Cline, Roseanne Cash and others who are MY favorites.
However I am even more of a fan of World Music since 1980 such as Fado, Brazillian, Jamaican reggae, African and Cabo Verdean.
So eventually Rock and Roll has devolved into sounding too chaotic and lacking creativity to some of us compared to its roots like Buddy Holly,
    Chuck Berry et. al.
And now we turn to this era with fresh ears.

Firstly, let me address most of the negative reviews that had to do with sound and video quality. Almost all the sound issues resulted from some sort streaming issue and the video issues were base on the DVD version. I am reviewing the Blu Ray version. Both the sound and video were fine as you would expect from a Blu Ray disc.

With regards to the performance, I am an old guy and I am not into the Lady Gaga thing with all the crazy clothes and what I previously thought was just a clever creation of some highly paid PR folks. While the PR stuff is probably, to some extent, true I was surprised and amazed how well The Lady can sing traditional pop and jazz. While her upper register is a little compromised, as is Tony's at this stage in his career, she can really sing...She has to be taken as a serious artist. I think of this peculiar combination mush in the way somebody described the relationship between Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers. "He gave her class and she gave him sex appeal." In this case "sex appeal" might not be appropriate for an 88 Y.O octogenarian, but they both kind of added a bit to the others shortcomings with the net result being that the sum is greater than the parts.

The songs were great...many wonderful standards and some great songs that I was not at all familiar. The disc was a combination of solos and duets. I knew that Tony could sing the hell out of these songs, but Gaga was a total surprise. She is a real artist and her taste in clothes, at least on this occasion, was great. The back up band was also first rate.

All in all, if you like tradition pop songs, this is a highly entertaining disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Show By Two World Class Live Performers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 20, 2015
A fantastic show by two world class live performers backed by top quality musicians. Every song hits the target and makes you want more. Tony Bennett is his usual laid back master of his craft self, while Lady Gaga proves to be a revelation when it comes to performing Jazz. Her performance of "Lush Life" for example, is breath taking.
Bennett mostly leaves it to "Lady" to animate the performances but still manages to bust a few moves of his own and joins in with the playful and often funny banter between the two.
It's obvious the two have the utmost respect for each other and are clearly having a ball performing together.
If you only buy one music DVD this year this should be it
