Product description
Revenge-pop? The Prog Karen Carpenter? Barbra Streisand on acid? Bat For Lashes on an obscure book-binge? Whichever way you choose to describe Confessions Of A Romance Novelist - the debut album by The Anchoress (co-produced by Mansun's visionary frontman Paul Draper) - one thing's for certain, this is something truly different. Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, PhD and producer Catherine Anne Davies (aka The Anchoress) sums up her album's overall concept as, "Deconstructing normative ideas of love and romance. With each song sung by a different character, it's what you might call a musical ghost writing of sorts." Co-producer and collaborator Draper has helped Davies capture a collection of songs on which she has played a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, flute, omnichord, mellotron, wurlitzer, glockenspiel, and celeste (as well as multi-tracking up to 25 vocal harmonies on some songs). The creation Confessions Of A Romance Novelist was not without its setbacks and was interrupted by a series of events that threatened to derail the project completely. Catherine says, "This album has been made on a wing and a prayer, lots of favours, one car crash, one death, one broken hand, and a lot of patience on so many parts. Stir in 3 jobs, 4 studios, 2 arrests, 3 pianos, 40 songs and 1 very patient engineer - and you get some way to understanding what a long road it has been." The incomparable Confessions Of A Romance Novelist follows two sold-out singles, which were playlisted on both BBC 6Music and Xfm, and received plaudits across the globe, from America's NPR, to Les Inrockuptibles in France, the NME, and influential websites like The Quietus. "Deft, engrossing lyrical work with some beautifully dark arrangement.... enthralling" - Clash "A strutting howl of a vocal and grit-edged guitar.... a sprawl of dark southern gothic" - The Quietus "Davies is making music like nobody else at the moment." - NME "Wales's (much more explicitly feminist) answer to Lana Del Rey." - Ann Powers, NPR

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2016I'm not too good at writing reviews, so I won't go into depth too much and waffle!
What I will say, is that I came by the Anchoress due to my love of Mansun and following Paul Draper, who helped Catherine to create this cd.
It's intelligent, different, dramatic... sweeps effortlessly through styles, from brooding to intense to lighter, but always with such intensity. I can hear a mix of styles from female artists such as PJ Harvey and Tori Amos, but it's more than just a 'female album'.. lyrically it's a different 'take' on the usual love stories, and you feel the heartache through the smooth and wonderfully round voice that Catherine has. Her piano work on some of the more instrumental songs in amazing, and creates such atmosphere. I can really understand why Paul was drawn to her work. Without his input I would never have discovered The Anchoress, and now I have, I'm hooked. the more I listen, the more I am in love with it! I believe she is in the studio working on some more material, and I cannot wait to hear what she's been doing :) xx
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2016Elements of PJ Harvey, Natasha Khan, Marina & The Diamonds and - not surprisingly - Mansun interwoven with the artist's own unique musicality and lyrics which are in turn sharp, caustic and witty. This is a "pop" album also without any suggestion that it is lightweight or throwaway. The songs are strong and memorable. I bought this on a bit of a whim so I am even more chuffed to own this record!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 March 2016An absolute joy of an album, that for a refreshing change is actually an album, not a collection of downloadable tracks. From the pulsing drive of Long Year through the singles to the soaring dreamery of Doesn't Kill You, and my favourite PS F*** You to the title track it's brilliant. All killer no filler, it's the work that Kate Bush never got to, a highly polished debut and one of the best I've heard in years. Long years.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2016Have to give kudos to the Anchoress. Beautifully produced album -- rich and voluminous, yet minutely crafted -- like if Phil Spector met Kate Bush in the "Secret Garden". Nah, "Enchanted Forest" sounds better. Had "Popular" on repeat in my car for the past week. Hope nothing's subliminal in the song. In any case, it's a well crafted album and might be studied by future musicians on how everything was pieced together.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2017One of the best debut albums I've heard in many a year, Catherine is quite a unique artist, not sure what genre to put her in or who to compare her to, needless to say she is very talented(writes all her own songs and plays many of the instruments), highly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2016originally seen as part of simple minds, then realised she had this album. Bought on a whim, it's actually very good. Very nice lady!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 February 2016The most impressive debut album I've ever listened to. Musically haunting and lyrically thought-provoking. Once listened to,the album entices you back time and time again. Enchanting, melodic and highly recommended for discerning muses. The Anchoress is a lady in waiting who will soon be taking her rightful place in the hierarchy of musical legends.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2016An incredible debut album from The Anchoress, it's a fantastically well written and intelligent, so catchy, witty, emotional, dark, and powerful. Has a progressive rock/classical feel with some funk, hypnotic guitars, back-beats to boot, sublime vocals A finely crafted album.. a songstress right up there with Kate Bush, Tori Amos
