Another thrilling ride that is suspenseful, exciting and new from a very talented author. I haven’t read/listen to one of Ms. Andersons books that I haven’t loved. She gives you the thrills and excitement of a fast pace action packed story that has an outstanding plot with wonderful characters. The vice president is killed with every fact pointing to biologist, Audrey Lockhart who is minding her own business and gets attacked in her lab. The man tells her to back off and scares the crap out of her. She doesn’t run and hide she runs to the police who are in with the cartel. The next attack against her isn’t so friendly and things get real interesting and very dangerous. Ms. Anderson has a way of pulling you in from the first page which always starts with excitement and suspense. This is one story you do not want to miss.

I just love Eric G. Dove as a narrator he pulls you in with a very strong and powerful voice. There are no background noises or any breaks in his audios just a clean clear and power listen. His tones are outstanding you can feel the passion, excitement coming right out of your speakers. His male voices are a wonderful as his female. You are never left guessing who is speaking or what they are feeling. His Performance is one of the best narrators I have listened to. I know when I see his name it is going to be a wild exciting ride.

Audrey is a very strong character who is scared but doesn’t let that stand in her way. She is shocked to find out people are after her. She doesn’t know why everyone is after her or why anyone would want her dead she is just a biologist studying frogs trying to keep them from dying out. After being attacked she is on the run for her life with a mad man who she isn’t sure is there to protect her or kill her. I really liked this character she is strong and stands up for herself. She is hurt that maybe the people she cares about are after her. Who would set her up like this she hasn’t a clue but is going to find out. She is one bullheaded lady who is about to take down the people who are trying to take her down…that is with a little help….

If was so nice to see Patrick get his own story he is a sweet heart who has given up his life to serve and protect the USA. He does the jobs no one talks about some are not even legal but that doesn’t stop him when the bad people get in the way he takes them out. He stops crimes no one knows about and even some they do. He always gets his man or woman never looking back just take life and danger as it comes. For once he has to stop and put the pieces together that just do not fit. Audrey sure doesn’t act like an assassin until he knows for sure he isn’t letting her out of his site.

The author gives a compelling and powerful read full of action, thrills and tons of excitement. She gives you exciting passion that will burn up your pages. She twists a tale like you have never seen leaving you guessing which way she will go. She had me fooled for a little while things just didn’t add up. You will be so surprised to find out who is behind the crime and why they wanted Audrey to take the fall. Her life is about to change as she knows it. If you haven’t read any of Toni’s books you do not know what you are missing. Toni has been one of my go to author from her very first book she pulled me in scaring the crap out of me. Her plots are to live for she always gives you a page turner that you do not want to put down. If you are looking for an action packed thrilling read full of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat you have found it. I highly recommend this story or any that Toni as written. You are in for a wild ride.

It’s another good book in the series. One thing though- “prone” means on your face. She says Audrey fell onto her back, then the next page says “Audrey’s prone body.” Supine is face up, prone is face down. (“Up” is in the word supine, and “on” is in the word prone, so it’s easy to remember). Things like that bug me. But otherwise, I do like this author.

I really enjoyed this. The description sounded a little strange - a frog biologist framed as an assassin, investigated and consequently protects by a CIA agent. However, it surprisingly works for the most part and the book held my interest throughout with the right amount of suspense and romance. I have only read Book 1 in this series and similarly, it was told from the perspective of the male and female lead as well as the occasional POV from the perpetrators. I also found that you were able to figure out who the mastermind was behind the elaborate set up due to the limited number of suspect characters and the hints dropped by the author. I let this pass because you find out who the anti-hero is before the end. I'd rather find out early than have an obvious fact pointed out at the end, so I still gave the book 5 stars.

The story starts in Columbia where Audrey, a professor who works with Golden Poison frogs, is 'attacked' in her cabin. After reporting it to the police, she sets off a chain of events resulting in her running for her life. Killion is a CIA officer and confident jack of all trades and held with the task of investigating the assassination that Audrey has been framed for. He is thrust into the role of both protecting her and interrogating her while she has a Columbian cartel and an unknown enemy hot on her heels. Killion and Audrey bounce off each other really well, the dialogue being entertaining and well thought out as it delves into the background of the two main characters. The book is exactly what it's described to be - a romantic suspense. There's a good dash of the latter, which I enjoy, with the relationship between the two characters touched upon throughout the book.

It's the second book in the series I have read and although it said the book can be read as a stand-alone, I think I would have preferred to have read the books in order nonetheless. I'm a bit OCD with reading books of a series in order, but didn't for this one (it was free at the time I picked it up, hence why I read Book 1 and then Book 5). I would have preferred to have waited and read the former novels I'd missed as after reading the descriptions of the others, there are characters and events that are featured in the earlier installments. But that's just me because I'm a bit pedantic and like to have all the bits and pieces going in.

A couple of things annoyed me a bit in the book. Firstly, there are quite a few acronyms used in the book, especially referring to the CIA. These weren't always explained and I had no idea about a couple, which broke up the reading experience a bit. I also found that there were a couple of light spoilers in the book when they referred to characters and events from other books, e.g. there was a reference to someone being attacked. As it covers characters that are in another book, part of the story line (and consequently the suspense in knowing of the event) is revealed. I would have preferred if the blurb included a warning of something along the lines of it being a stand alone but it's recommended to read the books in order.

I still gave it 5 stars as it was an excellent read and any referrals to previous books didn't take anything major from the story line that I'm aware of at this stage. It was also partly my own fault as I should have followed on with Book 2 as I normally do. I will read the other books in the series.

Amazing narration from Eric G. Dove, who makes this brilliant listen. You can hear the drama, angst, steam and humour.

Audrey is attached left for dead and and finds herself having to put her trust in a handsome and mystery stranger. Why would anyone want to kill or frame a frog biologist. CIA Officer Patrick Killion needs to figure out if feisty Audrey Lockhart, is a deadly assassin or an innocent scapegoat. And the only way to do that is to gain her trust.
Killion is falling hard for Audrey, also he finds his hands full, dealing with a smart, beautiful woman, who keeps pushing all his buttons. Because of his work Killion finds trust hard. Audrey is a light in dark world. Can he put his feelings aside and walk away from this woman after he saves her. Will Audrey forgive and help the man from the shadows come out of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frog scientist on the run
Reviewed in Australia on June 7, 2018
All of this series are consistently good and ‘Cold in the Shadows’ completely hooks you in. There is Audrey the frog scientist, happy doing research in Colombia, until a grimy assassin knifes her. Then there is Killion, a CIA agent, who suspects Audrey of being a dangerous criminal. They meet when Killion is sent to interrogate Audrey and ends up saving her life.

This book is an on-the-run thriller with great banter between the main characters. The settings are intriguing, the locals all have vivid personalities and you are kept guessing about the shadowy bad guy. If you have read other books in this series there are familiar elements such as a very clever plot and an ‘unavailable because I’m busy being noble’ hero. In the Shadows is almost as excellent as Cold Malice and Cold Pursuit (my favourites in this series). It’s a totally engrossing romantic thriller and a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

I have read most if not all of Toni Anderson's books, and have enjoyed every one of them. She is a master at defining her main characters in her action filled stories. The reader becomes endeared to the characters while appreciating their strengths, insecurities and devotions. The author always adds a new feature as well as characters to books in her series. Here, she introduces us to the poison dart frog with habitat in Columbia, Dr. Audrey Lockhart, a vivacious researcher specializing in frogs and Patrick Killion , a CIA agent on special assignment investigating the suspected murder of a US vice-president. The action is relentless with self deprecating episodes and subtle humor throughout.
