- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2004I'm the first one to admit that I'm not a big fan of The Bachelor/Bachelorette. And after reading quite few of the reviews and peopel screaming about JFK, I decided to check out the original version of Girlfriend. To be honest, they left me rather bored. They just don't have that 'thing' that takes a group/artist all the way.
Well, I never saw the season of The Bachelor with Guiney in it (I never watched any of the Bachelors, just not my kind of 'fun'). But just because he was in a TV-show for a short while doesn't mean every one should dismiss him. I can't quite put a finger on it, but there is something about Guiney, and people just love him. Whether we like it or not, I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of Guiney in the future.
And remember people, don't write him off as a wannabe (if there ever was someone to be called wannabees it would have to be Spice Girls...), this guy is all about easy listening music, and I think that is exactly what this album is giving us. Nothing more and nothing less.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2014Gotta love Bob this is one of my all time favorites! keep singing, what about a Colorado tour...Can you say Red Rocks?
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2003Bob Guiney's "3 Sides" comes across first as "is this a joke"... "this is the bachelor guy right?". But after hearing "Girlfriend" and liking it I figured I'd buy the CD and give it a listen. I'm one of those people who listens to everything on a CD from start to end.
"3 Sides" is definitely a relationship album from beginning to end. There's no songs that aren't about dating, relationships, and the like. So if you don't want an album with these types of songs then look elsewhere for a purchase.
I'll run down my views on each song.
1. Girlfriend - Very Good song. Definitely a message here. Catchy. Gotta wonder if this was written after Bachelor was over but before he got to be with her.
2. Temporary Life - Very good song too. But seems the same basic story as the first song. He's waiting around alone when he wants to be with her.
3. Fortunate - One of the best songs on the CD. Definitely catchy.
4. So Wrong - I think this is a really great motivational song.
5. Bleed On - Overall a solid song and very well sung but the lyrics make me want to skip past it.
6. Spare Minute - I think this is absolutely the best song on the CD. Very catchy... worth turning up. If you get to hear this in a store or something... check this song out.
7. Craziest Girl I Know - Probably my second favorite on the disk. Good flowing song.
8. How Long - Another very good song. I never skip past this track.
9. Come Undone - For some reason I just don't care about this song. Not sure why. Infact I'd say it's my least favorite on the whole disk.
10. Slow 44 - Good song.. but a bit on the slow side and overall I could easily skip past it.
Ok I'll admit fully to watching the Bachelor & Bachelorette. It's been a good show both my wife and I have enjoyed since the second Bachelor series. So while for myself I'd rate this a good 4 stars... I can't objectively do that for the CD here because I'm looking at this as a recommendation for other people.
Overall production values are very good on this CD.. however the overall music seems a bit formulaic. While some songs I can honestly say I enjoy as much as anything from any other band I really love... there are several which I can easily skip past. So it's a mixed bag but more good than bad in my view.
So should you buy it? If you really enjoyed Bachelor Bob.. it definitely adds a little extra meaning to many of the events from the show. As stand alone music though I'd still say there's more good here than bad. It all depends on if you like bands like Better than Ezra.. and relationship songs. For that.. it's pretty good. There's nothing romantic about it. But it's good stuff.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2003Long after the reality shows fade to distant memory, one thing will remain. The music. Which is only fair because the music was in place long before there was even a reality show called The Bachelor. It's just back then only Michigan was privy to the secret. Lucky for the rest of us, we now have 3 Sides.
Generally we have a "three" rule in our house where if you like at least three cuts, you buy the CD. On 3 Sides, it was harder to find three tracks I DIDN'T like. I find myself able to listen to each track of the CD without fast forwarding through filler. And each time I listen I find a new favorite. "So Wrong" tops that list. It starts out as a ballad but ends as a rousing anthem. You can rock with "Spare Minute" or "Craziest Girl I Know", and there are catchy pop tunes like "Girlfriend" and "Temporary Life" - even the ballad "Bleed On". Bob brings the fun to his performances, and his love for music carries his voice effortlessly over catchy tunes you'll end up humming to yourself long after you're through listening.
If this is a sampling of what to expect from Bob Guiney and his band, I look forward to their next CD.
All in all, a formidable CD I expect to see rise on the charts and give Bob the praise where he deserves it.
The music.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2004Okay, this review may not be helpful, but I can't decide whether I have more of an urge to warn the masses that this is an appallingly generic piece of crap, or to run off and puke. Anyone with a halfway decent voice can get some studio producer to make them sound passable after hours in the studio. I'm not even sure if Bachelor Bob is one of these people. His amateurish wavering barely makes the cut. This isn't really much of a concern though, because no matter who was singing these songs, they would still sound just as lame. Easily the worst moments are Bob's bad grunge/pop attempts on "Spare Minute" and the If-I-Drank-Enough-I-Could-Pretend-This-Is-A-Pearl-Jam-Song "Craziest Girl I Know".
Point is, this album is boring, generic, awful. Music like this should be relegated to your local frat boy bar band so you can know to avoid it. I feel embarrased even admitting I downloaded the MP3s out of curiosity.
This album is, just like his book and recent sitcom appearances, an obvious and cheap attempt to stretch that final second of his 15 minutes of fame. There is no way this album would have been made without his having already lucked his way into that amusingly empty reality-show type of fame.
If you still don't get it, let me put it this way: if the hottest girl on earth wanted to get it on with me, but only if we did it to Bob Guiney's album, she'd be sleeping alone.
Enough said.
