Product description
Simply Red release their first new studio album in eight years with Big Love out June 1st on East West Records. When the band announced a massive world tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary last autumn, main man Mick Hucknall started thinking about recording again. “Once I began wondering how Simply Red were going to sound, I started writing songs,” says Mick. And once he started, he couldn’t stop. Big Love is the first Simply Red album to feature only original compositions since 1995’s ‘Life’. All twelve tracks are written by Mick Hucknall and produced by Andy Wright. Highlights include the celebratory first single ‘Shine On’ driven by their trademark blue-eyed soul sound and ‘The Ghost Of Love’, a big soul song punctuated by wah-wah guitar and the kind of bold orchestral strokes that once powered Barry White and his Love Unlimited. The break has done Mick Hucknall a power of good, newly refreshed he now has a much clearer appreciation of Simply Red’s considerable legacy. He admits that the band’s last studio album in 2007, ‘Stay’, was an attempt to pull away from their sound. “With ‘Stay’ I was running away from Simply Red,” Mick admits. “But now I’m comfortable with the notion of us as a blue-eyed soul group. I had to stop myself fighting that idea. Our sound is original too. I honestly don’t know of another band that has pulled so many musical strands together.” Quite simply, Big Love is Simply Red at their best, 12 tracks to cherish. With a 16 date UK tour this winter, including 3 shows at London’s 02 Arena, Simply Red are once again a band in their prime. Simply Red are: Mick Hucknall (vocals), Ian Kirkham (sax), Steve Lewinson (bass), Kenji Suuki (guitar), Kevin Robinson (trumpet and flute), Dave Clayton (keyboards) and new drummer Ronnie Roth.

Very happy with purchase.
Simply Red at their best
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2015I was absolutely delighted when Simply Red reformed as I'm a massive fan. This album has sincerity written into it as a an older Mick values what he has and particularly beautiful is the track "Dad" where he appreciates and reflects on what his dad did for him. I love his song writing and how this has changed over time which feels like he has let you into his life. His music is still excellent and so is his voice. I hope there's another album to come in time.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2017This is a fantastic album! Went to see Simply Red in Manchester at the end of 2016 when Mick Hucknell performed the whole of his Stars album. There is no doubt the guy has got an amazing voice even after all these years. He also communicates very well with his audience. On the back of this show I bought this latest album and am so impressed. The arrangements are just fantastic. Highly recommend this album if you like Simply Red.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2015This is a new album from Simply Red and i have to say it has some great songs on done in the Simply Red way, Mick Hucknall has that singing voice that is so distinctive and after not being there for some years it was nice to hear him once again,i listened to this album as part of Radio 2's album of the week and i liked it,there is the single out in the charts at the moment which is becoming very popular,i really like this album it is like turning back a few years.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 June 2015Firstly may I compliment the excellent customer service provided by Amazon, initially I received something I had not ordered instead of this CD, my query was dealt with most efficiently and a replacement CD arrived promptly.
However, this CD is somewhat of a disappointment, I have been a Simply Red fan for years and was really thrilled to hear about a new album, having understood that Simply Red was no more.
Whilst the words on this CD may well have great meaning to Mr Hucknell, sadly the music is rather "samey", has the dear boy lost his touch.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 July 2015Absolutely loved it. I am so glad Mick decided to write these fab songs. The one about his dad made me feel sad as I lost my own dad not so long ago and I completely understand his words "I wish I could phone you". Well done to all those involved in making this CD. If you love Simply Red you will love this as I did. Can't stop playing it! My favourite track "love wonders".

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2016Right up there among Simply Red's best albums. So pleased to have bought this and got into the songs before seeing them live again recently in London. The only disappointment was that the auto rip to my Amazon music account did not happen immediately as it should and took several contacts with Amazon to resolve.

I just love this album. From the first note, you recognize Simply Red's rythm and soul.
