Product description

Though Big Star were only active for a handful of years in the early -mid 70s, the Memphis group has gone on to become one of the most influential bands in modern music, with a cult status that few can compete with. This new compilation celebrates the founding fathers of power pop with 16 tracks spanning all 3 of their LPs (1972's #1 Record, 1974's Radio City and Third, released after the group disbanded). Includes rare single versions of some of their most popular songs, plus new liner notes.

Alex Chilton is most famous for being the lead singer on The Letter by the Box Tops and formed Big Star in the early 1970s. If you like melodic rock, this is definitely worth a listen as a sampler to Big Star's work.

I bought this on vinyl to replace my Big Star CD collection. I had all three albums but chose this as it has nearly all the Big Star songs that I really like playing - and omits most of those I find less enjoyable. While I agree that Holocaust and Kangaroo are masterpieces, I get little joy from listening to them too often and I admire the compilers for being brave enough to leave them out. If I had compiled this myself, the only change I would have made would have been to take out Jesus Christ and add in Blue Moon.

They were only together for a few years, and they never had any hits. Yet, this ironically named, power pop group’s 1970s work has been cited as an influence by an array of alternative rock acts like The Replacements, Teenage Fanclub, and REM. There have also been numerous reissues and compilations released over the years that have helped burnish their reputation, such as 1999’s The Best of Big Star.

This (annotated) CD shares its title, and 10 tracks, with that compilation, including: ‘In The Street’; ‘September Gurls’; ‘The Ballad Of El Goodo’, and ‘Thirteen’. It also fixes one of the problems of that short collection – there was nothing from the disturbed, but compelling, Third / Sister Lovers – by selecting 4 of the more commercial tracks from that album. The inclusion of different mixes and edits of certain songs is also a welcome novelty, and it even comes housed in a suitably melancholy, William Eggleston-esque sleeve.

Yet, this good-looking compilation still doesn’t feel quite right. There is no room for ‘What’s Goin’ Ahn’, ‘Kanga Roo’, or ‘Holocaust’ – though they were all considered good enough for the similarly-sized Biggest – and at just over 45 minutes it feels a little on the short side.

Si te gustan BIG STAR y el powerpop no puedes pasar por alto cualquier trabajo de la banda que inauguró el género, y esta compilación es esencial para conocer el conjunto de su corta vida musical. Recoge todos sus obras maestras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well- Deserved (and Well-Done) Best of for 70's Best Band Nobody's Heard of
Reviewed in the United States on 27 July 2017
Awesome record by an awesome (and severely underrated) 70's band. So glad to see they're still in the consciousness of the studios and music aficionados to warrant a Best Of release all these years later. Hopefully they reach new fans and continue to rock on in classic pop rock lore.

If you've never heard of Big Star, or mistakenly thought of them as "one hit wonders", this would be a great album to sample just how great they were (not their fault the studios and radio stations dropped the ball on getting their sound out to the mass markets).
