Got to love J.T.!!!

Got to love J.T.!!!
Very nice addition to James' catalog. He is still writing and singing at the top level.I can't remember when I've enjoyed an album more. I discovered it unexpectedly when I saw the "making of" documentary on TV.
Thank you for your feedback

I have been listening to James for quite a few years - first LP was James Taylor and the Original Flying Machine and over the years I've had almost all of the others. I heard him live at The College of William & Mary at age 18 (1972). Although my tastes and preferences for listening have grown quite a bit over the years I still have a place in my heart reserved for this writer / performer. I've always been predisposed to enjoy his work. Even though this new release does not closely parallel any of those former, James has achieved a fine level of his craft, I find listening to and seeing the interview oriented DVD enjoyable. It is not possible for me not to because he has remained consistent just like a good old friend. My favorites would be You and I Again, Stretch of the Highway, Showtime, and Before This World/ Jolly Springtime. He has always attracted other fine performers (both in and out of the genre) and this work continues to demonstrate that same careful selection and attraction. For the most part his vocal quality is still pleasing and has aged pretty well....not better or worse....only older now. Each of his compositions tell a story in song that musically align well with text. If you love James then you will love this work. As with most all of his previous work, this one will grow on you quickly eventually finding another special place in your heart. NOTE: The last track Wild Mountain Thyme is not written by J.T. but is a fitting restful farewell ending. I hope Mr. Taylor continues to write and perform - perhaps more frequently. Should he find his singing ability to age more in time (and he will) he should continue to write AND sing his fresh and unique musical stories for the enjoyment of other true hearts. D. loves your work, James.

For this listener it is hello sweet baby James, glad to hear you again. No doubt, James Taylor is much like a fine wine, not a speck of age in his sound and lyrics on Before This World. One word that best describes this album after immediately listening to the first song “Today, Today, Today,” timeless.

Before This World has distinct and familiar melodies and lyrical content that fans have grown accustomed to a James Taylor album. Indeed, comparisons will sing through each of the ten songs on the record, and a few or all of the songs tell a story much like a narrative in a Ken Burns documentary (could have easily accompanied the soundtrack to the ending credits) or David McCullough book in most of his songs that always leave a fond and unforgettable memory for listeners; one cannot deny the sound on the record is reminiscent of days long gone such as the social commentary of 1969’s “Fire and Rain,” sentimental songs -- Carol King composition “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Something in the Way She Moves,” and “Shower the People.” All of the songs are worth mentioning and most likely more than will be a favorite. But highlights on World include “You and I Again,” “Angels from Fenway,” “Snowtime,” the title track “Before This World/Jolly Springtime,” and “Wild Mountain Thyme.”

Too many things may be said about the album but will leave it up to the listener that would like to include the record to their playlist. Indeed, highly recommended to diehard and new fans, and a great album to listen to any day and place, especially on the road to add a bit of peaceful atmosphere to the landscape.

It has been some time since James Taylor has given us yet another collection of poetic lyrical pieces that look at life by way of pleasant melodies sung by a master vocalist. The melody of “Montana” reminds me a bit of that of “Millworker”. “Far Afghanistan” is, in my opinion, by far, his best war song. “Stretch Of The Highway” is yet another always enjoyable travelling “road” song of which he has created quite a few. “Watchin’ Over Me” is yet another acknowledgement of the blessings he has received that have enabled him to live and survive life despite life’s challenges and his human frailties. “You And I Again” is one of many quality songs through the years about his personal romantic relationships. As has been my experience with all his albums previously my initial appreciation will grow for me with time. Though I cannot always relate to his work on a descriptive intellectual level, in other words an exact and true understanding of the meaning of his words, I almost always can relate to it on a more abstract spiritual and emotive level. Happily it seems that the well of musical poetry and its presentation has not yet run dry for James Taylor.

Not his best album (hourglass still wins) but definitely good. I was really surprised that my favorite song on the album was Far Afghanistan, I thought it was going to be a preachy war song, but it's catchy, and the words are really touching, it made me feel what it was like for a down home American kid to be shipped overseas to fight a people who's culture that he's not accustomed to. Very moving. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a Scottish folk song round out the album. I loved his rendition of wild mountain thyme. Angels of Fenway was also a great track. He's really got a way with words in that one. I'm giving the album four stars just because more than just one song really didn't move me. Otherwise, glad to see some original stuff from JT!

5.0 out of 5 stars James Taylor: como nos velhos tempos.

Recomendado.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bel disco, sigillato ma non in perfetto stato, spedizione e gestione Amazon come sempre eccellente.
Reviewed in Italy on September 26, 2015

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album of original songs recorded in the last decade. Beautiful!...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 12, 2015
I love James Taylor. I'm deeply touched by the authenticity of his words and music. It's the way he writes his songs, the way he sings, the way he plays that guitar with such harmonic chords. He's genuine, he's unique, nobody compares to him. This latest release is another awesome example of that. He's done it again. And then the musicians that play in the album are the best there is. Such good taste!... I sure have listened to this album over and over again. Beautiful!...To my taste, this is the best album of original songs recorded in the last decade, no doubt.
It's a pity James Taylor doesn't come more often on tour to Portugal. I saw him live just twice, in Lisbon circa 1992 ("New Moonshine" tour), still with Don Grolnick and Carlos Vega (both deseased), and 2 or 3 years ago when he played live in Cascais, with the recent band. I wish he would visit us again for this recent album tour. But I must be dreaming...
