About the author
Jed Power is a Hampton Beach, NH based writer and an “Active” member of Mystery Writers of America. His sixth novel in the Dan Marlowe/Hampton Beach, NH mystery series, “The Hampton Beach Tapes,” is now out in both e-versions and trade paper.
The first novel in the series, “The Boss of Hampton Beach;” the second, "Hampton Beach Homicide;" the third, "Blood on Hampton Beach;" the fourth, 'Honeymoon Hotel;" and the fifth, "Murder On the Island," are all available in both paper and e-versions. The protagonist is Hampton Beach, NH bartender, Dan Marlowe.
The real Dan Marlowe was Mr. Power’s father’s best friend. Mr. Marlowe wrote his crime masterpiece, “The Name of the Game is Death,” while living with the Power family in Woburn, MA. He named a character in the novel after Jed Power. Mr. Power has returned the honor by naming his protagonist Dan Marlowe.
Also out now in both Paper and eBook is "The Combat Zone," the 1st novel in a series about a P. I. who hangs his hat in early 1970's Harvard Square and spends unhealthy amounts of time in Boston's notorious red-light district--the Combat Zone.
Mr. Power also collects vintage Noir/Hardboiled paperbacks, which includes, amongst many other items, the largest collection of Dan Marlowe novels, short stories, inscribed items and memorabilia.
Mr. Power is also mentioned several times in the new Dan Marlowe biography, “Gunshots In Another Room,” by journalist Charles Kelly.
He has been published in “Spinetingler,” “Over My Dead Body,” “Hardboiled,” “Boys’ Life,” “Plan B,” “Stone Cold--Best New England Crime Stories Anthology,” “The Rap Sheet,” “Yellow Mama,” “Short Story Digest,” “Near to the Knuckle,” “Naked Kiss,” “Short-Story.me,” “Twist of Noir,” and others.
He can be reached at jedpower@verizon.net. Mailing address is P. O. Box 3906, Peabody, MA 01961 U.S.A.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2019Engaging plot and wonderful setting of Hampton Beach NH back in the 1990s. The characters are well written and you can’t help but like the protagonist Dan Marlowe, flaws and all. I’d recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2016Crooked feds, dead bodies, drug smugglers, and a protagonist with problems and a bad past, who tries to sort things out. All set at Hampton Beach, a treat for those who know the area.
A fun summer read, with easily recognizable characters and locales. Crooks and capers with the summer sun and the ocean breeze adding spice to everything.
It's the start of a series, so if you like this one, move on to the rest.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2012If you want Boston nitty-gritty, this crime novel is your ticket. Bartender Dan Marlowe (who shares a name with the paperback suspense novelist who produced The Name of the Game is Death), gets inadvertantly embroiled in a battle among low-lives and mobsters desperate to recover a load of cocaine that has gone missing. Marlowe can be a tough guy, but he also yearns for the kids from which he has been separated by the cocaine habit that took away his good sense for a while. His battle to regain his life and to do right by his friends and family--all the while trying to fend off a crooked DEA agent and various nasty criminals--make this novel an absorbing read. Fans of Dennis Lehane and George V. Higgins will revel in the settings and atmosphere, and anyone who loves a hard-charging plot will love the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2013I came across this in the Kindle store while searching for books by Dan J. Marlowe, and since I have vacationed at Hampton Beach every year for about ten years now, it caught my eye and after reading the sample decided to pick up the book. This is good reading. Although the plot line involving missing heist money, the various characters crossing paths while looking for it (including gangsters, drug dealers, crooked AND straight cops, dumb muscle, dumber molls, and all the regular-type characters that show up in these types of novels) is nothing anyone will find groundbreaking, the characters are written very well and with humor and realism, and the pacing of the novel generally moves along very nicely (although there are a few transfers from one chapter to the next where I felt as if something had been left out). Also, the main character is sympathetic and likeable, and Power uses the novel's setting and scenery about as well and anyone could. If you are familiar with Hampton Beach you will probably love this book. Even if you are not, if you enjoy crime novels you could do a lot worse than this. I look forward to the next book in the Dan Marlowe series and look forward to watching Jed Power improve as he writes more novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2016Quick, easy read. Enjoyed the book and will probably read more in the series. Kind of want to know what happens next in Dan's life.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2013I was never really interested in crime novels until I read The Boss of Hampton Beach. I have vacationed on Hampton beach since I was a child and found it intriguing to read about places that were familiar. The story was well written and captivating. I found the characters and their individual roles entertaining, even their Boston accents made me chuckle!! It was the type of book that you can't put down and want to keep on reading. I am looking forward to reading the next book when released.
