- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2024I'll start by saying that this "Complete" version is not for the casual Dylan fan. But if you are a BIG Dylan fan I'm sure you will be very happy with this comprehensive 6 discs of recordings from this era. Hearing alternate takes and the evolution of songs prior to the polished final products to a music geek like me is pure heaven. So if you are avid music aficionado, you will not be disappointed with this collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2015This is the Bootleg Series release I've long looked forward to. I, like many Bob Dylan enthusiasts, have long wondered what was on the rest of those reels of tapes of these historic recordings of 1967.
Well, they're all here! Most of them, anyway. Despite the odd song in progress, cut offs, distortion or snippets of what survived, these recordings demonstrate the working arrangements between Dylan and The Band on various covers and originals even though they're sometimes humorous. But still it goes to show the music brings out the fun with most musicians just to break the ice. But let's not forget with Bob Dylan doing some songs tongue-in-cheek was nothing new, especially in this collection. Take for instance during the third verse of "Get Your Rocks Off"; both takes of "See You Later, Allen Ginsburg"; the first take of "Lo And Behold!", to name a few.
The choices of covers here are also worth noting-Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues"; John Lee Hooker's "Tupelo" and "Mississippi"; Elvis Presley's "I Forgot To Remember to Forget"; The Impressions' "People Get Ready" and Tim Hardin's "If I Were A Carpenter".
There are multiple takes on this collection. Seventeen of them are two takes apiece-"Million Dollar Bash";"Yea! Heavy And A Bottle Of Bread"; Crash On The Levee"; "Lo! And Behold"; "You Ain't Going Nowhere"; "I Shall Be Released"; "Too Much Of Nothing"; "Quinn The Eskimo"; "Odds And Ends"; "Apple Suckling Tree"; "Big River"; "I'm A Fool For You"; "See You Later, Allen Ginsburg"; "The French Girl"; "Ain't No More Cane"; "All You Have To Do Is Dream" and "The Spanish Song". Three of them are three takes apiece-"Tears Of Rage"; "Open The Door Homer" and "Nothing Was Delivered".
There are even new interpretations of earlier Dylan classics such as "It Ain't Me Babe"; "One Too Many Mornings" and "Blowin' In The Wind"[At almost 7 minutes in length]. On this version of "One Too Many Mornings", Richard Manuel[One of the Band's keyboardists] sings lead on the first verse while Dylan sings the remaining verses. Just as the way Dylan +[Bassist] Rick Danko chimed on the word "behind" at the end of every verse the previous year when performed on the European tour[Which was featured on Bootleg Series, Vol. 4-"The Royal Albert Hall Concert" Live 1966], this time Dylan is chimed along with the Band , except Keyboardist Garth Hudson who was strictly a multi-instrumentalist.
Speaking of instrumentation, Robbie Robertson, the guitarist and chief songwriter of The Band, had also substituted as drummer in the absence of Levon Helm as well as Richard Manuel. Rick Danko also handles trombome on "Bourbon Street" and "Don't Ya Tell Henry" so it's most likely that Robertson may have done the bass parts since no instrumental line-up was actually stated on these recordings. Bob Dylan is mainly on acoustic guitar and on the odd occasion plays piano[Most notably on "Apple Suckling Tree"]. Manuel may have played harmonica once in awhile if it wasn't Dylan.
Keep in mind that these recordings are strictly no-frills and not overdubbed like the ones featured on the 1975 release[Some of them, not all of them] which featured 8 other songs by the Band alone. Those recordings were mainly demos being worked on after recording with Dylan. Whereas this collection of Bob Dylan and The Band are The Basement Tapes: Raw. That's the abridged version of this Bootleg Series[The double disc edition]. But since this is the 6 CD Deluxe Edition it's the holy grail of material right here. That's why I chose this edition.
For those of you who are seeking the holy grail of Bob Dylan & The Band, I wouldn't hesitate to get this set. Get yours NOW!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2014When I saw the UPS guy drove up to my house, I went to the door and waited for him to walk up. He smiled and said, "I hope you haven't been waiting too long!" I said, "Only about forty-four years."
One the most memorable events of my first year of college in 1970 was hearing the first available bootlegs of these even-then-legendary sessions. Since then, I have obsessively chased down each successive, and more complete, bootleg release, right up to and including "A Tree With Roots", which I got my hands on a few years ago. I found that to be a revelation. Could, it get any better?
There isn't enough room here to adequately describe this music, or to defend my obsession. At least two entire books have been written about this music, and anybody who wants to fully understand this music, and it's importance to the entire history of American popular music, should seek out Greil Marcus' brilliant "Invisible Republic" (re-released as "The Old, Weird America") or Sid Griffin's "Million Dollar Bash". The more immediate question to me is, is this new release worth all the commotion and the cost?
Yes, I was startled when I first saw the original retail price of this package. Even though it came down a bit before release today, it's pretty pricey. Maybe even unfairly so, since they certainly could have found a middle ground between this deluxe package and the two disc sampler. Maybe a complete six disc version with a more traditional package without all the bells and whistles, for example. But when you've been waiting for forty-four years, you don't quibble. And, to be honest, the package as it exists is very nice, with lots of fun stuff to read and lots of intriguing photos and such. Oh, hell, I admit it, I would have bought this one even if a cheaper one was available!
The other question that remains is, what kind of a job did they do restoring this? Previous bootleg versions have touted ever newer and better sources, second versus third generation sources, ans so forth. And there was always another one out there, most notably an early-generation tape purportedly in the hands of Neil Young, for example. Something to hope for, that maybe someday there'd be an even better version. But the original tapes, restored with the help of Garth Hudson himself? No way!! And yet, here it is, in my sweaty little hands.
Having had this for all of three hours, I can't say I've listened to the whole thing. But I have sampled several of the songs that I am most familiar with, including some of the most revered titles such as "I'm Not There" and "Sign On The Cross". The verdict thus far is a big thumbs up. Way up! The hallmark of the bootlegs, as opposed to the remixed, overdubbed and severely edited 1975 official release, was Garth's stereo mix. The separation was rather stark, with Bob's voice and maybe guitar in the right channel, most of the rest, including Garth's incredible organ, in the left. The integrity of that original mix seems to be intact here, but a little less stark. Bob is now, to my ear, a little more center-right, the rest center-left, and the result is a warmer sound with a deeper soundstage, without any loss of detailing. I almost feel like I'm hearing this stuff for the first time. Well done, Garth! You're still a genius.
Whether, like me, this music has been a part of you existence for decades, or whether you're new to Dylan and his music; if you care about American music, and especially if you enjoy the "new" so-called Americana genre, you must own this collection. It is as essential to the American canon as anything by Mark Twain, Hemingway, Aaron Copeland, Melville, Robert Johnson, Frost, or - well you get the idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Versione completa di Basement Tapes
Ero perplesso in quanto il sito Amazon indicava The Basement Tapes Raw, ma si tratta della versione completa a 6 cd. Quella Raw è di soli 2 cd e dovrebbe essere più economica. Ma io volevo la completa e questa lo è. Bellissimo cofanetto.

5.0 out of 5 stars For completists and rock music history buffs
I gave this 5 stars because I am a completist and avid fan of both Dylan and the Band. But buyer beware, this is not for everyone. These are basically rehearsal tapes. Dylan trying out lots of songs that were only partially complete in many cases and never appeared in any of his official releases. Some are great (to an avid fan), some are just bits and pieces of incomplete songs. Then there are those that have been previously released in the double CD Dylan/Band Basement Tapes version - a lot of truly brilliant stuff. Despite the many years with Ronnie Hawkins, the Band doesn't really shine here (and I say this reluctantly as an avid fan). They are just rehearsing and their tight passionate playing is not evident here. Dylan is doing all the vocals (maybe they only had one microphone?). The criticisms here are only for full transparency to those who are not avid fans. For those like me, I loved this collection. It's amazing to me to hear Dylan and the Band rehearsing! They also do a lot of covers - blues, country, folk, even some R&B. They were clearly having a ball playing all these songs they must have had a connection with, and mixing them with all the new stuff Dylan was trying out. If you are a full tilt fan, you'll love this box set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Singer Songwriter: Mach es kurz (und immer wieder anders)
Praktischerweise kommen die verschiedenen Versionen hintereinander und sind meist kurz, nicht selten ist der Titel die Botschaft: I forgot to remember to forget, Spanish is the loving tongue, I am a fool for You, Nothing was delivered, Down on me (Janis Joplin sang es), People get ready (Rare Earth?), Big river take, Million Dollar Bash, Yea, heavy and a bottle of bread (zum Schmunzeln, eine Klasse für sich), Please Mrs. Henry (man sieht ein breites Grinsen), Open the door Homer, I shall be released (Joan Baez...), Too much of nothing, This wheel's on fire (Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger), Quinn the eskimo (Manfred Mann's Earthband), One too many morning, Bourbon Street (man probiert ein wenig New Orleans Jazz), Blowin'in the wind, If I were a Carpenter (Bob Seeger), It ain'nt me babe, The Spanish song (sehr spanisch oder doch eher mexikanisch?)
The answer my friend...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome masterpiece of priceless historic relevance
Bought this boxset because of the previously unreleased material regarding the awesome work Dylan and the Band had done during the days they worked together in Big Pink Basement which was originally registered at a 4 tracks equipement. The result is simply astonishing. How Dylan was mainly vamping all that stuff taken from the cultural background he acquired over the years since he was just a child listening the radio at home in Hibbing, MN. And how deeply he gets into the roots of it all. Sometimes moving, sometime hilarious, other times so stirring you could cry.
What I really loved the most are the old ballads like Four Strong Winds, The French Girl and The Hills Of Mexico (aka The Trail Of The Buffalo) as we may appreciate Dylan's commitment with his material and the depth of his feelings regarding the subjects of the songs he performs. But the historic relevance of every bit on this tapes makes them always surprising, revealing and magic as those sessions turned out to be.
Every Dylan fan and everyone seriously interested in the evolution of popular music and how Bob Dylan influenced what came around since then, just delving into the roots of American music and primitive influences beyond that lonesome ocean. This is also a fine initaition to those interested in the research of folk and popular music tradition.
