- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2024This was the breakthrough album in the UK for John Mellencamp. At least, that is my opinion. 'Jack and Diane' lit the fuse and everything else followed afterwards.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2024Compared to original release and newer compilation the sound was the expected louder, but was also cleaner and better defined. Also arrived with no case cracks along with the other three discs.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2018classic record! this pressing is 180g, and sounds very sharp and clear-- it's as if mellencamp is performing live in front of you. great sound. highly recommend, especially if you get it from amazon. they ship crazy fast! this is a must have for any vinyl collection, especially for classic rock or john cougar fans
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2010First, I am discussing solely the Vinyl LP here; I make no claims for the CD. I have been a fan of John Mellencamp for around thirty years or so, and when he played 'Pink Houses' another early track from the album 'Uh Huh' at Barack Obama's inauguration, I was delighted and watched with great pride and a full heart as the rebel came home. 'American Fool', The album before 'Uh Huh', was produced during the period when he was forced by his record company Riva to adopt the fake surname 'Cougar' for commercial reasons. He rightly detested this, and developed a personal antipathy to his work at the time to a certain extent, and his fans followed his lead, resulting in this album tending to be underestimated. This is a shame, for it contains much excellent music; simple, powerful, with a restrained, intelligent anger apparent in the lyrics. Two tracks in particular deserve further mention; 'Jack and Diane' is a realistic and intense elegy for disempowered youth, and contains the line '...life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone'. It is rare that one hears absolute truth, and that line surely qualifies, and was astonishingly prescient from such a young man as he was at the time. I first heard that when I was a young man, and it has remained with me now for decades, surely the mark of a great songwriter. 'Jack and Diane' is superb music, and nothing more needs to be said. 'Hurt so Good' is an oddity, probably the rockiest track that Mellencamp ever produced, but I sense he was unhappy with it, as he never tried to repeat the experiment, but an excellent track nonetheless. There are weaker tracks of course, but after all these years, the sentiment expressed throughout remains relevant. I recently replaced my original album with a second hand copy that I had to import from the USA, (I am British) as it is effectively impossible to get at any price in the UK. That should tell you something about the quality of the music and the timeless appeal of 'The Mid West Springsteen'? This is some of the best work of a great songwriter and a true voice of America. Buy it if you enjoy honest, biting, intelligent music straight from the heart of an angry young man, a rare experience these days.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2013This cd along with a few others were purchased for my father who loves John Cougar Mellencamp. He listened to this artist constantly when I was a kid. I am glad I found it at such a great price. He was super excited and encouraged when he received them. Shipping was quick.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre product
The album is great, no questions about that.
My problem is with the pressing and the packaging of the record.
The record was poorly packed and the cover corners were turned with multiple fold lines.
The recording quality is great but the record skips a bit every so often.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehr klangstarke 180g Neu-Pressung des lässigen US-Rock Klassikers
