Editorial Reviews
Airing June 6, 2017 on PBS in the United States, "THE AMERICAN EPIC SESSIONS" directed by Bernard MacMahon, is a feature-length film showcasing an all-star roster of contemporary artists, led by Jack White and T Bone Burnett, replicating a 1920s recording session and paying tribute to the great artists of the past.
For the film, the American Epic team has reassembled the very first electrical sound recording system from the 1920s, and invited Jack White and T Bone Burnett to produce an album of recordings by twenty of today's greatest artists. In this beautifully filmed musical feature, these artists are given the chance to pass through the portal that brought the world into the modern era.
Engineer Nicholas Bergh has reassembled this recording system from original parts and it is now the only one left in the world. The system consists of a single microphone, a towering six-foot amplifier rack, and a live record-cutting lathe, powered by a weight-driven pulley system of clockwork gears. The musicians have roughly three minutes to record their song direct to disc before the weight hits the floor. In the 1920s, they called this "catching lightning in a bottle." All the musical performances in this film are live. The audio you hear on this soundtrack is taken directly from the discs they were recorded to, with no editing or enhancements.
The soundtrack features many additional performances not seen in the film. Featuring: Alabama Shakes, The Americans, Ana Gabriel, Ashley Monroe, The Avett Brothers, Beck, Bettye LaVette, Bobby Ingano, Elton John, Frank Fairfield, Jerron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Los Lobos, Stephen Stills, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Nas, Pokey LaFarge, Christine Pizzuti, Raphael Saadiq, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Taj Mahal, Jack White, and Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2017In case you missed the documentary film American Epic on PBS in early July find some way to see it, it is amazing. This CD is the music recorded during the sessions for the film and it is an amazing tour through regional music from all over the United States in the early 1900s, some interpreted in more contemporary ways such as NAS's unbelievable rap of On The Road Again. The artists and the music are both top shelf, many of them dedicated to the preservation of the original roots music of the nation and all giving it their best on their performances. Each track was recorded using a single mic fed through the only existing disk lathe that was lovingly restored to its original working condition. The lathe itself is completely mechanical -powered by brass weights - and gives the artist a scant 3 minutes of run time to get their song engraved in wax. Apparently the blues artists termed the experience of putting music mechanically onto wax as "catching lightning in a bottle." Jack White and T Bone Burnett as well as a cast of hundreds have created a CD that will never get old.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2021I could write a 10,000 word review, but I won't.
The work Jack White did in this project is of such great importance to the history of music, recording, and mankind. If you can about the history of the human condition, music, and technology all wrapped up into one, the entire American Epic Sessions is a must. Every second of video, every song recorded, every piece of that ancient equipment rack with the first ever electrical recording equipment is a must. If you're one who claims to appreciate music and history you need to find, watch, listen to and read every spec of media that was generated by this project. inspiring to say the least!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2017Excellent music recorded by pop icons of today on the only remaining 1920's vinyl master recording machine that took 10 years to restore. Sound is amazing, music superb with awesome arrangements. If you did not see the 3 part documentary on PBS entitled "American Epic" or the 2-hour special "American Epic Sessions" you owe it to yourself to watch them. All the music on this album is from the sessions special. I am excited to add this to my collection of music. Some of my favorite tracks are: st Lois blues, mal hombre, one hour mama, two fingers of whiskey (an original by Elton John), and my favorite track from the album "On the road again" by Nas.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2017I watched both the American Epic series and the American Epic Sessions. In a perfect world, I would buy both the original music and the music played by current artists. After watching the Sessions series, I feel like the current artists like Jack White Avett Brothers , Willie Nelson, etc. did such a great job of playing the old songs that I was better off buying this disc. You can't go wrong with either, but IMHO this version was the best collection of this amazing music.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2020Pretty sure it was my dad’s favorite Christmas gift. He couldn’t wait to leave my home to drive back to his home 2 states away so he could listen to it. We watched the documentary together and share a love of music. This was a sort of special gift for dad and it was perfect. Great artists and music.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2019If you haven't heard this album or seen the PBS program documenting its production by Jack White and the collection of fabulous American musicians playing historical music most of us have never heard, you are missing something amazing. Oops! Sir Elton John is one of the contributors. This is one you will enjoy again and again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2019Wow this was good. The premise is a Western Electric recorder of vintage 1927. You have 3 minutes to record your song, everything and everyone was so good. Watching how the recordings were done with the soloist closer to the mike. Wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017sent this as a gift and my friend enjoyed it very much..

5.0 out of 5 stars Historische Liveaufnahmen
Tolle Idee, historische Aufnahmen zu machen. Altes Equipment neu erweckt. Das ist richtig geil! Live spielen und gleich das Master schneiden. Kein Pro tools Mist, keine Nachbearbeitung. Leider nur mit einem Mikrofon, für diese Doku natürlich genau das Richtige. Für alle anderen Aufnahmen wünsche ich mir 2 Mikros für stereo 😁

5.0 out of 5 stars Great roots music
Nice collection of mostly roots style music. The story of the recreation of the first recording lathe used to make vinyl records waaay back and the unique sound that results is very cool. Read the CD notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Labour of Love
It was a great documentary & this CD is the soundtrack. Every track in this diverse collection of early American folk styles is at the least interesting & many really are outstanding - Taj Mahal & Los Lobos spring to mind - with a warm & enveloping production that, although recorded through only one primitive microphone, somehow seems superior in sound quality. An important addition to the major folk music anthologies & with the added bonus of Elton John honking & bashing his trotters in a southern style.
