About the Author
Many readers ask John from where he gets his ideas. Well, he's a veteran of the corporate rat-race, a former journalist, and he's always been an astute observer of human and social behavior. On top of that, he's really good at embellishing.

About the author

Amazon #1 Bestselling Author and a Readers' Favorite Gold Medal winner.
A veteran of the corporate rat-race, John W. Mefford never realized he was mentally documenting every experience of his professional journey—not until he started his first novel during a so-called "corporate timeout."
A voracious reader of mystery-thrillers since before he could shave, John enjoys weaving a twisty tale that keeps readers riveted until the last page. He's also learned he's pretty good at embellishing. Just don't tell his fourth-grade teacher.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2023Although Alex and her kids are supposed to be on vacation, it seems like her work never stops. When her family becomes involved, she's determined to figure out what's happening, as well as trying to save everyone she loves. Secrets, lies, betrayals, and intriguing twists will keep you guessing until the very end.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and outstanding author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2016Mefford describes At Dawn as a good beach or pool side read, and that it is. The first chapter will put you on the edge of your recliner. Graphic, action filled and curiosity creating, and perhaps the best chapter in the book. But sadly I think the novel could have been much better. As I read it I could not help but think Mefford was working to create a page turner, and his work is too obvious. At times the dialogue between Alex and her children is strained. Her relationship with her partner Archie is always understandable, but not always believable. And portions of the plot appear to be omitted so that he can surprise the reader as he wraps up the story in the final chapters. All this said I will also tell you that I am one of his pre-publication readers which means I read At Dawn free of charge, and had to purchase the book in order to write this review. I would not have done so had I thought this a wasted read. There is action, it is graphic and it grabs your attention at times. I simply wish it had grabbed my attention more often.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2016I am one of John Mefford’s advanced readers. Although I received a free copy prior to publication, I bought my own as soon as it became available. Why? Because I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
AT Dawn, the fourth of John Mefford’s latest series, is a must read book. It is quite readable by itself, but you will find it so much more satisfying if read in conjunction with the others in this series. Alex Troutt is a kick ass female FBI agent. She is as tenacious as a wolverine, while still maintaining a strong sense of humor and a surprisingly soft side as a single mother.
John manages to quickly develop his characters. You find yourself immersed in the storyline, caring about the actors as if you know them personally. He deftly weaves his tale, presenting situations and locations so real it feels more like you are watching a movie and not just reading a book.
If you enjoy a well crafted story with realistic players and locales, you cannot go wrong with any of Mr. Mefford’s tales. Buy yourself a copy of AT Dawn... you will not regret it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2016All through the book Alex is a strong detective, mother to Erin and Luke whom she will protect with her life. Yet she is dedicated to solve each new added piece to the puzzle of intrigue. I really love to read of her adventures and will look forward to all following books in this series. So many challenging plots gradually coming together. A bit of humor is added with interaction with Archie, always 'hitting' on Alex, while proving himself a good friend striving to protect Alex, Erin and Luke. It is amazing how many different actions gradually intertwine into a suspenseful novel. Well done, John Mefford. I am looking forward to more.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2020Alex is on vacation with her kids and trying to spend time with her dad. An old friend shows up in the midst of a drive by shooting and Alex finds herself helping to solve a case. A case that as it develops includes her dad, ex boyfriend from high school and one of her best friends from high school.
This story is non stop action and introduces several new characters. It does address the cliffhanger from the previous book, but does not solve or answers cliffhanger potential change in the group dynamic.
It was interesting seeing Alex work in a different environment and without her team there in person. Alex is growing into her self and coming to terms with her husbands death and betrayal more and more each book. I enjoyed Nicks changes as well and look forward to see what new finds we see in the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2016I received this book in advance in exchange for an honest review, but, as soon as it came out I purchased it. Alex Troutt stories are a real treat. While she has been through her own trials and tribulations in previous stories, including losing all her memory in an accident, this book can be a stand alone story if you want to start the series at this point. In this story, she tries to take some time off, from her FBI job, visit her beach side hometown, reconnect with her father, meet his new “girlfriend,” and relax. If you have ever read any of these stories, you know in advance that even a vacation at the beach is no vacation when you are Alex Trout. Between the drugs, the gangs, the murders, the kidnappings, the plot twists, and, of course, the bullets flying everywhere, Alex would have been better off staying home with her children and chasing bad guys from there. Each of the stories is completely different, but the characters themselves develop a bit more in each book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series - At Dusk. I know it will be fantastic.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2018This book feel apart in the end. After building up so carefully (and quite slowly), everything just happened at the end. Examples: role of father and Carly in "trade" business. I felt like the author sort of gave up rather than take the time to finish the book correctly.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023Different Alex tale but still full of the female Rambo allusions that introduced the previous books of the series.A lot more interaction with her family, which proves she is into her job above all else. A lot of nonsense with her compatriots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 4th Book in the Alex Troutt Series
This is book 4 in the Alex Troutt series, and in my opinion, probably the best yet, I won't go in to the plot, as other reviewers have done this sufficiently. But I will say that what I loved in this book is the interplay between the characters, for exampIe I really liked that there was more about Alex's relationship with her children; the descriptions of the locations; the twists and turns in the plot and of course the usual high-octane action which is the trade mark of this series.
As I said, this is book 4 in the series, but it reads equally well as a standalone book, although I suspect that once you have read it you will want to go and get the first three to get the back story, it would be well worth doing.
I did receive a free advance review copy of this book, but as usual, when I love a book, I have bought a copy anyway to support the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars "the fight in the dog"
At Dawn is a really pleasurable read, as are all of Mr.Mefford's books and, especially, those of the (Special Agent) Alex Troutt series, of which this is number four. All are stand alone novels although even greater enjoyment comes with getting to know and grow with her from the first. This time, Alex takes her children to her old home town for a quiet, relaxing holiday. But it turns out to be far from the anticipated restful break in her routine.
I love the interaction between the characters, especially that of Alex with her family: the concerned mother, loving but irritating children, and her response to her father, with whom life had always been difficult and who now comes complete with new girlfriend hanging on his every word. We all want to respect, and be respected by our parents even if we know it is a losing battle and i really felt for her in the confusion and frustration her situation aroused. We also meet a couple of her old school friends, as well as welcoming back an earlier encountered disaster of a colleague. The dialogue is great, the plot fast and often furious, sometimes funny - and all a highly recommended read.
