You want music that is loud, fast and heavy? Exactly. On The Art Of Drowning, AFI deliver on all three fronts. Songs like "Ever And A Day" and "The Days Of The Phoenix" sound like a crunchy, no-nonsense cross between the joyful minimalism of label-mates the Vandals and heavier hard-core outfits such as Sick Of It All and the Cromags. Davey Havok's vocals are impassioned and focused--one could never doubt the sincerity of this man. Newest members Hunter (The Force) and Jade Puget (ex-Redemption 87), meanwhile, both contribute to an album that is often quite dark and gothic in its intensity. Harder than 1999's Black Sails In The Sunset, and all the better for it. --Jerry Thackray

- Reviewed in Canada on February 8, 2004I first got into AFI after hearing them on the radio, so I'll admit, I'm not exactly an old-school fan. However, after picking up Sing the Sorrow, I went to purchase this. While I didn't like it on first listen, I put it in again a few days later, and when you really listen to it, it's an amazing CD. Here's the track-by-track rundown:
1. Initiation- Only 39 seconds long, this serves as an intro and does its job, and that's it. 7/10
2. The Lost Souls- I like how this transitions right from Initiation, and it's a decent opening song. 8.5/10
3. The Nephilim- Similar in sound to The Lost Souls, but with a unique feel in its own right. I'm sure that didn't make much sense, but you have to hear it to know what I mean. A good song, though. 8.5/10
4. Ever and a Day- A great song, coming after 2 harder songs, this one is more mellow and slow. Davey's voice sounds especially chilling during the first verse, and the rest of the song is good as well. 10/10
5. Sacrifice Theory- Right after Ever and a Day ends, this one kicks in at high speed, with a cool bassline at the beginning. This song in particular is one of the catchiest on the CD and a lot of fun to listen to. 10/10
6. Of Greetings and Goodbyes- Another powerful song, the chorus, as mentioned by others, sounds kinda like Offspring, but that's not a bad thing, especially in this song. The bridge is unique and pretty cool, too. 9.75/10
7. Smile- A short one here...it's okay, but there's better stuff on here, and this song lacks structure. 7.25/10
8. A Story at Three- Has somewhat of a slow intro, but afterwards it kicks into a strong verse and chorus. This is another one that's extremely catchy, especially the bridge. 9.75/10
9. Days of the Phoenix- This is the supposed single off the CD, but I've never heard or seen it on the radio or TV. However, I can see why this could be a single. Once again, very catchy and the lyrics are pretty cool too. 10/10
10. Catch a Hot One- Davey's screaming throughout most of this one, but unlike Smile, it gets pulled off almost flawlessly. Great music goes along with a great chorus. 9.5/10
11. Wester- This was the first song I liked off of AoD, and as time goes on, it only gets better. This is the song you'll sing along to the most if you get the CD, and the musical backing is strong, as well. 10/10
12. 6 to 8- Unfortunately, this one, another quiet song, isn't as good as Ever and a Day, but it's still pretty good, albeit long (4:21). 9/10
13. The Despair Factor- A decent song, I wonder if its name is derived from the AFI fan club, the Despair Faction. The opening is pretty cool, although the rest of the song is hardly the best on the CD. 8.5/10
14. Morningstar- A quiet one, similar to God Called in Sick Today off of Black Sails or This Time Imperfect from Sing the Sorrow, Morningstar is a fairly catchy, but very solid song. 10/10
15. Battled- The hidden track at the end of Morningstar. The only disappointing part is that after waiting 7 minutes you only get a song that's 1:03. Fast and angry sum up the feel of the song. 8.75/10
Overall, this is a CD that you'll be playing for years to come, should you decide to purchase it. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Sing the Sorrow, as there are definitely some signs of it in here. However, if you are new to AFI, this is a good place to start. The songs are solid and it makes a great buy.
And remember to keep on rockin', and happy listening.
- Reviewed in Canada on December 16, 2003I love "Sing The Sorrow", don't get me wrong, but I believe their best stuff comes from as some may call it, their last underground album, in which every song is finely polished off.. "The Art Of Drowning" offers strong bass and guitar, unbelievable singing from Davey, and untouchable feeling and emotion.. Each song is like a gem:
Initiation: Good beginning, has no lyrics, but nevertheless sets the tone for the album 9/10
The Lost Souls: This is an amazing song.. Davey screams out every word.. It's fast, catchy, and really powerful.. One of my favorites on the album 10/10
The Nephilim: Great song.. Not their best, but great guitars on the song and a good bridge to it 8.5/10
Ever And A Day: A slower, quieter song, but with a solid chorus.. One of the first songs I liked on the CD 8/10
Sacrifice Theory: Crazy song.. It's just under 2 minutes long, very fast and strong.. Great backup singing 10/10
Of Greetings And Goodbyes: First song I liked on this CD.. If you've ever heard "Total Immortal", this song is very similar.. It's one of the best on the CD 10/10
Smile: The only song I'm not crazy about on the CD.. It's still pretty good, but if there's any song I'd call a filler, it's this 6/10
Story At Three: Good guitar at the beginning, fast and punky, and comes to a halt in the bridge, which is slow and amazing.. This is a finely written song 10/10
Days Of The Phoenix: I believe this is their single.. Great bass and guitar and Davey's voice is sick.. One of my favorite AFI songs, period 10/10
Catch A Hot One: Good chorus, catchy song altogether 9.5/10
Wester: Best lyrics on the CD and probably my favorite song on the CD.. Wester is the kind of music that made and will make AFI more popular by the day.. This song is something special 10/10
6 To 8: A real change of pace.. A slower song, but very solid and different 8.5/10
The Despair Factor: Strange song but that's what makes it great.. It makes it's trademark when all the music stops and Davey says "My whole life is a room.. One.. Big.. Dark.. Room" One of my favorites on the album 10/10
Morningstar: Slow, very popular song, quiet but meaningul, and it's the perfect ending to the album and the perfect conjunction for "Sing The Sorrow" 9.5/10
This CD is a must get if you like "Sing The Sorrow", which is the album everyone knows about since they hit the mainstream.. AFI's dark style and the screaming of Davey make them so different and so amazing.. This CD is worth every penny, and you have my 100% guarantee that it won't disappoint you.. I got this CD burned for me before I even bought "Sing The Sorrow", but I never listened to it until I realized how good "Sing The Sorrow" was.. I didn't give it a chance at first because I knew nothing about the band, but I'm glad I did, because now I consider it one of my best CDs.. For anyone feeling hate, lonely, betryal, pain, or just at a loss, this CD is for you.. It's a disc you can really relate to if you need to let it all out.. I recommend this it to ANY punk fan and I hope my review was of help..

5.0 out of 5 stars Old School AFI at their Best
Verified PurchaseI would have first gotten this album around the time Sing the Sorrow came out but lost it when I was transitioning between my previous vehicle to the one I am driving today (previously, it was a pretty typical practice for me to keep my music CDs in my vehicle to listen to while I was driving around). At the time that I would have initially gotten The Art of Drowning I probably preferred Black Sails in the Sunset but that seems to have changed these days for reasons that I seem unable to fully appreciate.
Something that really stuck out to me with reacquiring this album was where exactly the band was at with their development as musicians at the time of it’s release. Certainly, they have come a long way by comparison to where they were at during their Nitro Records, punk rock days. As much as I have enjoyed hearing the band’s sound evolve over the years there is a part of me that continues to have a soft spot in my heart for their old work. Listening to this album for the first time in probably close to 15 years definitely evoked a strong emotional response within myself that likened to feelings of nostalgia, gratitude, and self-loathing for having been so careless to lose the album in the first place. I am truly grateful to have this album back in my music collection.
One of the main reasons I wanted to review this purchase is so that I could discuss the album cover art. Right here is another great example of why I continue to advocate for music media in physical formats. The artwork on this particular album by Alan Forbes is truly incredible and an experience that will be entirely missed if only a digital copy of the album is acquired. The impressive album cover artwork spans both the front and back of the CD jewel case and folds out into a gatefold when viewed entirely. Further, the liner notes in the album feature several additional works by Forbes and as a result will also be something that is missed if only a digital format of the album is acquired.
I would also like to provide a brief commentary on the service I received from Amazon on this purchase. When the album showed up at my residence the front of the jewel case had a significant crack in it. Given that CD jewel cases tend to be pretty fragile, in general, I wasn’t too upset by the crack since the CD and liner notes were undamaged. After all, the main objective here was to reacquire a physical, working copy of this album which clearly wasn’t the easiest thing to accomplish given it’s age and availability. In fact, I would consider it a miracle that I was actually able to track down a new copy of this album for purchase and I would provide Amazon a heartfelt “thank you” for providing me a means by which I could score a new copy of this CD. That being said, this wasn’t the only CD I ordered through Amazon that showed up at my residence with a cracked jewel case. I think maybe the business ought to think about using better shippers for items like this or maybe make it so that the customer can pay extra for a more secure shipper. After all, another album that I ordered through Amazon that DHL serviced showed up in a sturdier shipper by comparison and had no cracks in the jewel case whatsoever.
Overall, I consider myself very satisfied with this purchase. After admiring the artwork on Black Sails in the Sunset, All Hallows EP, and this album I couldn’t help but think that it would be sort of cool if the band were to reach out to Forbes to see if they couldn’t get him to do some artwork for their next album (or EP). It certainly would be a way for the band to reach back to their roots which they continue to claim as being important for them as their careers as musicians continue to progress. That is my opinion on the matter, I guess. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope my feedback is useful in some regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant quality.
Verified PurchaseIt said it was the grey marble version, but what I got was just standard black vinyl. Description says it could differ, so I don’t mind at all. Happy to finally have this vinyl in my collection. Fantastic album. I AM happy that the listing doesn’t include the vinyl only track “Dream of Waking” but the version I got has that song on it.
