This funny, riveting and engaging political thriller by Democratic advance legend Steven Jacques is both a great read and a terrific look inside the often cloaked field of presidential advance, an activity that Jacques accurately describes as "an addiction disguised as a calling". Taking place in an action-packed 3-days (starting just before the 2008 New Hampshire primary, and moving onto South Carolina) the witty protagonist, advance lead Bix Benjamin is caught up in a political maelstrom and must stay one step ahead of the various forces of evil that are likely to derail his candidate's (and his) career -- inept field staffers, tyrannical southern mayors, spotlight-hogging right-wing media sensationalists, etc. Bix sets several tendentious plots in motion to hep his candidate re-take the lead, stave off a corrupt campaign manager, prevent an international incident and restore world peace (well not really the latter, but the book really strives hard).

This book should appeal to readers that have watched political candidates and events from afar as well as veteran campaign junkies and operatives. The story is fast-moving, the characters engaging and the writing light and witty.

“Advance Man” is political thriller, documentary, and wry comedy braided together in a really fun read. The author has a background that put him at the center of real backstage events and planning for presidential elections and trips for decades. It’s fantastic that he can take us, the readers, behind the curtain that always hides those plans and machinations from us!!

The fictional story hooked me. It’s compelling on its own, but knowing that it’s infused with real experience teases with a kind of guilty fascination with the events and characters. The main character, Bix, smart, quick and savvy, uses humor as engine and brake, diffuser and highlighter in the constant pressure cooker of the campaign. The other characters, boldly audacious to audaciously pathetic, ring true and stayed with me after I finished the book.

Book junkie, political junkie, laughter junkie – you’re all gonna love this book.

Because I am a news junkie, I had a feeling this would be a great book.

This is an extremely well written book. The character development left no doubt as to who is who.

To anyone interested in the mechanics of running a political campaign, this book is THE book for you.

I was riveted from the beginning all the way through and was sad to reach the ending.

Also, the author has a great sense of humor.

One of the best books out there, in my opinion. This one has a permanent home in my e-library.

I loved this book!! I didn't expect it to be such a page turner - what a wonderful surprise. Steven is funny as hell, and laughing out loud is one of my favorite things. Steven's ability to develop the characters and the places is spot on! I felt like I was there watching this unfold, not reading about it.
This is one of those rare books from which I look forward to getting some distance - so I can pick it up and read it again.
I would love to see this become a movie and if I were younger and a man, I would love to be cast as Bix!!

Interesting insight to political campaign strategy. Doesn't seem as though Bix liked the candidate though. Would have liked more gossip.

What a fun book for us political junkies! Very funny, laugh out loud stuff! I do want to let the author know, who ever edited this book really screwed him as there were multiple mistakes that bothered me as I read. They were so obvious! The book is terrific and it is sad that his publisher didn't catch these faux pas.

I just finished, Steven Jacques' Advance man and although I seldom laugh out loud when reading, I can say that it did leave me in a constant state of internal chuckling. I am student, teacher, and novelist of Pianist in a Bordellopolitics, but knew very little about the "advance." Jacques made it so much fun, it almost makes me want to go volunteer for the upcoming election. The author is a master of bantering dialogue and he gives the reader just enough information about the conversation that I could hear, sad, sarcastic, and satirical, coming out of the mouths of his fantastic characters. I will never look at campaigns the same way again. I recommend that this novel with the greatest possible enthusiasm.
