Editorial Reviews

Masterworks Broadway celebrates the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Tony Award"&"reg;-winning musical, A Chorus Line, with a definitive, remastered new edition of the best-selling original Broadway cast recording. A visionary, game-changing theatrical achievement as well as a blockbuster commercial hit, A Chorus Line reinvigorated the traditional Broadway musical in 1975. A Chorus Line "&"ndash; 40th Anniversary Celebration features eight bonus track demos that "&"ndash; for the first time "&"ndash; allow the listener to eavesdrop on the creative process of composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Edward Kleban, including songs that did not make it into their beloved and acclaimed score. The bonus tracks include early working versions of "&"ldquo;I Can Do That,"&"rdquo; "&"ldquo;At the Ballet,"&"rdquo; "&"ldquo;Sing!,"&"rdquo; "&"ldquo;One"&"rdquo; and the mega-hit, "&"ldquo;What I Did for Love."&"rdquo;

"&"nbsp;

A Chorus Line "&"ndash; 40th Anniversary Celebration introduces a new high-resolution (24/96) master of the original cast recording, taken from the surround-sound remix created for the SACD-only format (previously available only in that format). A Gold Record winner and 1975 Grammy"&"reg; nominee for Best Musical Show Recording, the recording of A Chorus Line was the last of the great original cast albums produced by Columbia Records legend, Goddard Lieberson.

    First things first - I unashamedly acknowledge my prejudice, "A Chorus Line" is my all time favorite Broadway musical. I've seen this show dozens of times from the original Broadway cast (3 times SRO before any replacements) through numerous touring companies as well as some regional productions. The remastering of this original cast album is, in my opinion, perfectly done. However, if you're purchasing this 40th Anniversary edition for the bonus tracks I suggest you click the the Amazon MP3 link and sample those tracks first. I found very little of real interest or enjoyment in the additional tracks. I've read the books and viewed the documentary (several times) about the making of "A Chorus Line" and found them to offer more insight into the production than the bonus tracks of material that hadn't yet been refined for inclusion or songs that were never used at all. If you're a theater professional (or just a very invested audience member or cast album collector) you MIGHT find these bonus tracks of value/interest but if you simply want a beautifully remastered copy of the original this one is perfect and very deserving of 5 stars. I have no objection to the inclusion of bonus tracks and have often found them to be quite entertaining (the "Hello Dolly", "Fiddler On the Roof" & "Hair" deluxe sets all have pretty decent bonus tracks) but in this case I personally just don't see that the bonus tracks were all necessary and/or add much to the overall value of the remastered original cast recording.

    I remember being there with Mom and Dad siitting front row center and watching a troupe of talented dancers bringing to life the struggles of auditioning for the lead role in a Broadway Musical It was so thrilling to hear in story and song how they sacrified to get the ultimate goal

    I love the original Broadway Cast from '76, the digital re-master is almost as good as my Mom's LP. You still can't beat Vinyl run through an tube amp. The additional tracks are purely for the enthusiast, they're recordings of the composer singing the songs, presumably to pitch the production to producers, or possibly the cast. The man is a genius, but not a professional singer.

    This is really quite a remarkable achievement. Not only is the sound quality vastly superior to the original, but what hasn't been mentioned here is that the "Montage-I, II, and III" is expanded to include more of the number than was previously released, due to the time constraints of the LP from 1976. It's not quite as complete as in the new 2009 recording, but in my opinion they tried to cram too much material there that would have been better left on stage and off the CD. (Do we really need to listen to Zach calling out the dancers' numbers every time we want to listen to "I Hope I Get It"?) Contrary to the other reviewer I found the "extras" quite interesting, although I agree that they are probably not something you're going to want to listen to over and over.

    I saw and loved the 2009 production, but as anyone who has ever seen the OBC cast, there will never be a Cassie like Donna McKechnie, or another Kelly Bishop or...or...or. This new recording just reinforces how brilliant they all were.

    One of my favorite Broadway cast albums. I saw the show years ago and it was fabulous. When I saw the movie, I was disappointed. There's no comparison. Must be seen on stage. The cast recording captures the authenticity of getting a job on Broadway...or any stage show. I was inshiw business earlier in my life so I can really relate. If you love this show, you won't be disappointed.

    Chorus Line is my favorite play (the movie does not live up to the stage production) and I finally wore out my cassette tape so needed a CD. Love, love, love it just like I did 40 years ago. Oh No! That makes me 81 years young!

    Reviewed in Spain on February 5, 2020
