- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2016Have you ever bought a latte from a barista and that first sip was so good, but after a few more sips and the longer the drink cools you realize that the drink is a little too sweet? That was this book. Started off good but as the story progressed everything got very sweet and contrived. I would not go so far as to say trite- book had some originality, zaniness, and fun but everything ended up pat.
Millie is a rich, famous romance writer and Carson is in finance. Both on their was to visit an inn his grandmother owns for the holidays. Millie gets into a car accident thanks to the cow and Carson makes up a lie that they are engaged so that he can be with her at the hospital. Somehow the fact that he has a fiancé spreads throughout Chickory, NY...hence the little white lie. Now bring on the zaniness and loads of sugar from everyone. Every character was super sweet, full of fun, and brushed off every difficulty with a laugh and an oh well. Millie was a saint (she is...emotionally and financially charitable). Even Carson, who was the most level-headed of the bunch ended up being perfectly sweet. I had a hard time taking the antagonist seriously and not everything was resolved at the end.
If you are looking for a fun, sweet, feel good read with zany characters and you don't mind suspending belief, then this is your book! This might not have been my perfect read but Kristy Tate is a good writer so I would try another book for the right price.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2016This is a cute, quick romantic read. She is a very wealthy romance writer but seems to have no love in her own life. Even after being dumped and cheated on by her boyfriend she realizes that she didn't really love him. Through a chain of events they all wind up at an Inn run and owned by the hero's grandmother. The hero is in finance in New York and he is traveling to his grandmother's Inn to take part in a Christmas pageant. He is constantly bailing his grandmother out of debt as she has no money sense and just spends with no regard to how she is bleeding him dry and jeopardizing his career. The hero and heroine get caught up in a lie that in the beginning served them both. But as it goes with lies, as time passed the lie got bigger and bigger and there didn't seem to be any way out of it and then they didn't really want out it.
I enjoyed the story. I had a hard time with all the people that tried to control her life under the caption, "because I love you and for your own good". Thank goodness she had a spine and stood up for herself and did as she pleased - but not right away which bothered me somewhat. I would recommend the book as a quick and easy read and very entertaining.
SPOILER - I would like to know a couple of things. How on earth did the town thug have 2 million dollars to loan and what on earth did the grandmother do with that kind of money since the Inn was so run down, in need of massive repairs, and she was constantly having her grandson bail her out of debt?? That didn't add up for me. I was also confused as how Char disappeared and wound up at the Waffle Haus which was 3 hrs. away. If he rode to the hospital with her in the ambulance, how did he get his car?
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am a reader and this is my opinion, nothing more nothing less.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Enjoyed the book but the story got lost with so many characters showing up at the lodge. Interesting read and characters stories were entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2016Her character awakens to possibilities when Millie's inner perception catches a moment with a nostalgic black and white memory flash. With little nudges by fate which trip Millie into a key klutzy moment, and a corner turn collision, Carson is given opportunities to act and become intrigued by his new associate. A magnified twist of good intentions leaves them Co-conspirators in an uncomfortable little lie that becomes mutually beneficial.
With clever sidekicks that keep you giggling, I found myself quickly hoping that the characters work out their happily ever after. Perceptive little glimpses remind the reader that it's healthy to communicate, be independently happy and strong, and that maybe love is worth the effort.
This book rates a 10 in the sweet, clean, and well done categories.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas story
A feel-good Christmas story that fills the niche quite well. It could have been fleshed out more into a full length story, developing some of the characters, however was still an entertaining read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Little White Christms Lie
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I loved most of the characters and found myself laughing out loud at some of the funny situations in the storyline. Well done to the writer. I look forward to more of these stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much drama, not enough substance. [POSSIBLE SPOILERS]
I've tried not to go into too much detail, but there are some spoilers in my review.
This is an odd book. The author’s writing style is engaging but her plotting and storytelling ability fails her. Some examples of the problems include-
Extra things being introduced for some sort of dramatic or comedic effect but it reads as going just a bit too far, especially since those things are usually never heard of again, such as Carson’s huge family suddenly getting even bigger with an aunt and uncle arriving at the inn ( who are never heard from again). Then (after the original accident at the start) near the end there is not one accident, there are not two accidents, there are three accidents, because two just isn’t dramatic enough.
Plot points and backstory being introduced but ultimately left untold and glossed over, such as Carson being the way he is because his father was a gambler (I'd really like to know how it impacted him, not just be told that it did impact him). And there’s Liam cheating on Millie while her mother was dying, yet she seems to have totally forgiven him and be his friend. How? Why? This is not normal!!! Then the ex and his new fiancé turn up, then nothing much happens with them. They hang around, one gets injured… What was the point of them being there?
These things, she stories behind them, could have really built on the relationship between the hero and heroine, but they hardly ever talk to each other and every single time they do, two sentences in and they're interrupted. At the end of the book, they're still strangers with an attraction, not friends and certainly not a couple.
Common sense not being obeyed. Why didn’t the grandmother have business insurance that would cover injuries? Why would someone who fell need a settlement of 2 million dollars? Was she paralysed for life, because that’s the only scenario where I can see that settling for 2 million might be preferable to a higher settlement in court but if so, you'd think that fact might bear a mention.
While we're on the grandmother, we never even find out how she, who invited Milly to the inn (presumably to con 2 million out of her?) knew her mother, if in fact she knew her at all.
Why does no one rein the grandmother and her spendthrift habits in? Apparently she has partners in the business but doesn't consult them. She lies, schemes, manipulates and everyone loves her for it! WTF!! Someone lock her up because mad or bad, she's a criminally loose cannon.
What “thug” in his right mind loans that sort of money to an old lady who is already in financial trouble and has a failing business? Thug or not, he can't be dumb to have earned that much in his life. I can see maybe lending a few hundred thousand, but 2 million? That is stretching my credulity a little too far.
What was the point of ruining the nativity? Why did the kid run away? How did she get so far, alone and in the cold? Whose child and adult footprints were those in the snow?
In the end that seems to sum this book up, too much drama, not enough substance. And it’s a real shame too, because with a little fleshing out in the right areas, and some heavy use of the red pen on extraneous characters and situations, this could have been a great book.
All in all, it's a middling and often times, infuriating read.
