- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2016This was a very enjoyable, cute short story. The three main characters were very engaging and had great chemistry together. The heroine's family was quite awful, with the exception of her aunt, and you'll be glad that she gets her HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2015This book was pretty good considering the subject matter. A misunderstanding casts Viola Marsh as a wanton woman and she fears she will never be married or have a family. Only one day each year she is allowed out on Christmas Eve for Wassailing in the hopes of finding a man that will ask for her hand. But with the town gossips it is unlikely to ever happen. Little does Bio
A know that not only is there a man that has noticed her but there are two. And they don't want to fight for her favor. They are cousins, very close cousins, and they both want her, together, at the same time. For they have been looking for just the right woman that will be able to handle the lifestyle they enjoy. But Viola is so much more innocent than they realize and she can't even fathom what these two handsome men are offering, but curiosity and attraction has her rethinking what she thought she always wanted.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2015I can't imagine Viola living such a cloistered life. Once a year she gets some back bone and kind of makes a fool of herself. I don't usually read a book with three-somes but this was not a bad read.

What a delicious holiday treat! Fun, sexy, historical, a bit of romance, even a little drama mix into this Christmas ménage. All Viola wants is to find someone to love her for herself and not just because of the scandal, mistakenly out-of-proportion scandal I might add, attached to her name. When Will and Percy seek her out because of said scandal, it dampens the joy she feels at having been approached but will she risk it, will they once they find out the scandal was slanderous with very little truth behind it? Well, as usual, for that you'll have to read The Kissing Bough yourself but I will say that you'll enjoy the journey. Could this have been better with a few more pages and a little more character background? Maybe, but for this reader it was a lovely holiday gem just as it is and a great addition to my Christmas library.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021I enjoyed the story love the characters, and I especially enjoyed the steamy goodness. I love an enjoyable Christmas story.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2015It was ok but I felt there was way too much missing from true character development. The characters all except the main woman felt a bit one dimensional. The book overall needed more depth and plot to make it really good. Nice poolside short read.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2016I'm always a little hesitant to read short stories. A lot of the time they feel rushed or incomplete. There was no such problem with The Kissing Bough. The characters have goals, the pacing feels natural, and there's the perfect mix between plot and sexiness. I'm glad I gave it a shot.

4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this way more than I first expected to.
4 Stars
The Kissing Bough is the first book in the Forbidden Loves series by Madelynne Ellis. This is an erotic historical romance- a menage with MMF which is set at Christmas time- this story has enough sizzle to scorch the pages as you read.
This is a novella length story- making for a very quick and easy read. And while there were a few issues right off the bat- with the use of wrong words such as using ‘imminent’ instead of ‘eminent’, missing words, using singular words instead of plurals, and the use of muslin as the fabric of choice (which is normally a summer fabric) in the middle of an incredibly cold winter, that had me unsure of whether I would enjoy the story- but surprisingly it drew me in, and I ended up enjoying it much more than I initially thought I would.
I do wish the story had been longer, because the characters and the story drew me in, and I wanted to know more- but in a good way.
Madelynne Ellis is a new-to-me author, but after reading this book I will definitely look at exploring more of her work in the future.
Thank you, Madelynne Ellis!

4.0 out of 5 stars Forbidden Loves book 1
Viola's first (and only) season ended in disaster when she was caught in a closet with two partially dressed men. Not even her family believe her protests that she was completely innocent and had just stumbled into the wrong place at the wrong time. Now she has spent the last three years in disgrace hidden away from the world in the care of her spinster aunt. The only time she is allowed to mix with society is for the family's Christmas Eve Ball and every year she dreams of finding a man who will finally share her first kiss.
William and Percy are lovers who long to find a woman who will accept their relationship and be willing to join them. William must marry and produce an heir but he refuses to give up Percy as part of the bargain. When they hear of the scandal surrounding Viola they think they have found their ideal match, a woman who is open to sharing herself with two men. Viola is shocked by their offer but also intrigued. This could be her only chance at marriage but can she willingly accept two men into her bed and will they still want her when they realise that she isn't as experienced as they assume?
At 90 pages The Kissing Bough is a fairly short story but Madelynne Ellis did a great job of introducing her characters and making it easy to root for them. I loved all three characters and thought there was a great balance between sweet, emotional scenes and hot spicy ones. The Regency setting was great and I enjoyed the glimpse into Christmas traditions of the time. This really was a perfect holiday read and I'm now looking forward to picking up more books from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars The kissing bough
This quite sweetly written story shows how some men with illegal male lovers during Regency times may have dealt with the situation.
A girl whose reputation is less than spotless can hardly hope for advantageous marriage or kind treatment from her family, even if it wasn't her fault. Our heroine is kept closeted except for a village Christmas ritual when she is escorted by her brother to stand in the snow under a tree and mistletoe bough. Two gentlemen see her and wonder if she is the answer to their discreet dilemma.
I enjoyed the descriptive writing and tackling of this topic in what is yet a nice romance. This is an adult tale.
