Terror on the Bosphorus: The film crew sailing on the Sea of Marmara has never heard of the Little Fox. Nor of the fanatical Kurdish freedom fighters whose bizarre hijack galvanized the world. US. Diplomat Paul Cyrus conducts the knife-edge negotiations. But the film’s leading lady—radical, famous and beautiful Amanda Morgan—makes an offer the Little Fox can’t refuse. Herself for the hostages. A deal which he accepts with alacrity. And then vanishes with her into thin air. Suddenly, inexplicably, the Russians offer support. But Feliks Ilyinsky and his crack Spetznaz commandos have another, desperate agenda. Twelve canisters of the deadliest nerve gas invented have gone missing…

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Pollock's first novel, a thriller in the terrorist/hostage sub-genre, is an exciting and entertaining debut. When Islamic Kurdish terrorists take a Hollywood film crew hostage, Welsh movie star and left-wing activist Amanda Morgan offers herself in exchange for the captives, presuming she will be treated with care by the Kurdish leader, the "Little Fox." What she does not reckon with is the presence among the terrorists of John Courage, a brutish British mercenary who has lusted after her for years whenever his brain is not besotted by alcohol or drugs. American diplomat Paul Cyrus, going underground to rescue Amanda, joins a KGB team chasing the Little Fox, since the terrorists have stolen several canisters of a new Soviet poison gas. Things come to a head in an orgy of violence on a small Greek island. Pollock sustains his fast-paced story with memorable secondary characters--a gentle monk living as a hermit on a remote cliffside, an aging constable whose most demanding confrontations prior to the arrival of the terrorists were with an occasional drunken tourist or indiscreet nudist. Written with authority, this is a classic, can't-put-it-down thriller.

From Library Journal

The cast and crew of Barbary!, a multimillion dollar miniseries being filmed in Istanbul, are taken hostage by Ismet (the Little Fox), a Kurdish terrorist. With that act, other "players" are drawn into the drama. Paul Cyrus, an American diplomat fluent in Levantine languages, is recalled from vacation to communicate with the terrorists; while Amanda Morgan, a British actress as well known for her radical politics as for her physical attributes, offers to exchange herself for the hostages. All the elements for a successful thriller are present: exotic setting, diverse cast of characters, and opposing political agendas. But undeveloped characters that do not engage the reader's sustained interest and the implausibility of some actions do not support the inventive concept.

Dan Pollock:

"I write action-adventure and foreign intrigue thrillers--the kind of books that I like to read. My first published thriller was set in exotic locales that, at that time, I'd never laid eyes on--Istanbul and the Eastern Mediterranean. Yet Lair of the Fox went on to earn accolades from the likes of Clive Cussler and the late Ross Thomas, and critical praise from the New York Times, the L.A. Times, and Publishers Weekly. Even better, everyday readers agreed--and I've never looked back. I invite you to drop by my website -- www.danpollockthrillers.com."

Dan Pollock thrillers so far:

LAIR OF THE ROX

* Clive Cussler: "As exciting tale-telling as you'll want to read; the pace, the tension, the sheer intrigue are spellbinding!"

* Ross Thomas: "The suspense is unrelenting, the plot absorbing and the background exceptionally well observed."

* New York Times Book Review: "A can't-put-down thriller"

DUEL OF ASSASSINS

* T. Jefferson Parker: "A greyhound of a thriller, fast, sleek and graceful!"

* Denver Post: "An exciting read! Races to an explosively exciting conclusion!"

* Publishers Weekly: "Keeps turning up the suspense until the bang-up resolution."

ORINOCO

* Nelson DeMille: "Classic escape reading"

* Len Deighton: "A riveting read!"

* Thomas Keneally (author of Schindler's List): "What a ripping read!"

THE RUNNING BOY

* A sampling of Amazon reader reviews: "If Raymond Chandler were alive, he'd love THE RUNNING BOY." ''A great edge-of-your-seat thriller!" "Heart hammering tale!" "A massive truckload of thrills, spills and seat-of-the-pants action!" "If Hollywood does not make a movie based on this book, they will be passing up a blockbuster!"

COUNTDOWN TO CASABLANCA

* Jack Hayes (author of Blood Red Sea): "A superb thrill ride! Recalls the best of MacLean, Higgins & Cussler."

* J.R. Rogers (author of Mission to Morocco): "Evocative and lavishly abundant in local detail, Pollock's historical fiction thriller has all the right ingredients, and unexpected plot twists and turns."

I can't be as assertive in giving praise to this book as the other reviewers did, but I did enjoy it. I found the character of Paul Cyrus to be less than credible. He places himself in danger of death and leaves his cozy life on a yacht because some actress called him lacking in gonads? Well, it is a fantasy adventure book so I'll accept that flaw.
There is an interesting terror(or freedom fighter) theme about the Kurds' unending drive for a country of their own. The author does a good job of demonstrating the sometimes ambiguous nature of those terms by making the terrorists(my terms) a bit sympathetic. But for me murder, kidnapping, piracy, extortion etc. are always inexcusable regardless of the "righteousness" of the cause. The other plot that runs through the novel is the Russian angle which brings all of these people together in a quest for their own purposes to the Greek isles which leads to a satisfying conclusion.
I did find the character of the British film star Amanda Morgan an ultra-liberal, willing to put her words into action, more compelling. She and the true believer Kurd leader Ismet were both interesting characters and kept the reader intrigued by their unusual relationship- like a reverse Stockholm Syndrome.

This is a classic international thriller, in the same league as Ludlum, Follett, and Grisham. It grabs you from the first page with is immediate mix of character and action, and pulls you along all the way through to the last page. Apparently it is Mr. Pollock's first novel and its a good place to start if you are just discovering his work. The plot is intricately developed - set in the 1980s it involves terrorists, a Hollywood starlet, a cynical KGB officer, a brutal British mercenary, and an American diplomat in the hero role. The American joins forces with the KGB team to chase down the terrorist cell that has kidnapped the beautiful actress and threatens the world with a new form of poisonous gas stolen from the Soviet Union. All of this is brought to together in exotic locations in Eastern Europe, coming to an explosive ending on a tiny Greek Isle. I won't say more for fear of spoiling the twists and turns in the plot, but suffice it to say: this is a darn good read!

Disclosure: I am a crime novelist myself (published under the name Christopher Bartley) and I occasionally exchange correspondence with Mr. Pollock - though even that, I would note, is based on my admiration for his writing.

I guess the writers style and I just don't mesh well. His prose is a little too laced with info to show he did his research but fitting into the story well. The characters were good but mot to the point that I could relate well to them. I didn't care for the revolutionary heroine but maybe that's me.

With all of that said I'm still reading it and enjoying it.

This is an excellent novel, intriguing, fast paced with well wrought characters. The author's knowledge of and description of the region is superb. It's a most enjoyable work. If you like adventure thrillers you’ll love this one. Well written, it’s also something of a travelogue taking us from Istanbul to the Islands of Greece. The descriptive passages of the exotic locales are terrific. The plot, which is complex, opens up in Istanbul where Kurdish terrorists led by the elusive Little Fox, seize an old sailing ship on which a feature film is being made. The ensuing pursuit moves on then to the Greek Islands and the climax in an underwater grotto. The cast is a delightful assortment of heroes and villains, especially the central character the lovely Amanda Morgan; a film actress with a social conscience. It’s a fabulous trip and the second novel of Dan Pollock’s that I’ve read. I’ll be reading more. Highly recommended.

Dan Pollock has just earned himself a place on my 'Very Readable Authors' list. Lair of the Fox is a captivating read. This author knows his subject well and introduces fantastic detail without the often accompanying boredom other writers seem to manage. The characters are real and beleivable and whilst the plot line is relatively simple the way the story unfolds is both natural and compelling.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone with a bent for thrillers, I will definitely be looking to Dan Pollock's other books for more.
