Black Beauty Paperback – 15 Mar. 2013

on any 2 Terms
In late nineteenth century England, horses were pretty much at the whim and whimsy of their owners. For those employed as carriage/cart horses, things were even dicier as to how they were treated. Very often a carriage horse was worked and whipped to the point of exhaustion, and they weren't always fed or properly cared for when their day was done. Add to that the cruel check rein, or bearing rein, which pulled a horse's head up and didn't allow them to pull the carriage properly, severely injuring their necks. This used up horses way too quickly.

About the Author

ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Anna Sewell was an invalid who was dependent on horse-powered transport, and this gave her an intense appreciation for the horses and their plight. "Black Beauty" was largely born out of this concern, and became an effective treatise to improve working conditions for transport animals. Especially charming is the fact that the story is told from Beauty's point of view, a literary technique which was groundbreaking at the time. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR - Bren is blessed to share her life with her awesome husband, Shon. Together they manage a children's camp in Carroll County, Maryland. They both work for Carroll County Public Library to support themselves, then return home to work at camp and make books and art. Bren also illustrated the captivating DragonTree series, with more installments to come from Old Line Publishing. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Communication/Photography from Towson University, and worked in the graphics field for eighteen years. Black Beauty is her fourth published illustrated book.
