Shattered Ties (The Guadel Chronicles Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 78 ratings

Brittle Bonds (The Guadel Chronicles Volume 3) saw Va'del and Jain driven from their mountain home by traitors among the People. The pair's time in the lowlands, surrounded by hostile priests of a foreign religion, tested them in ways they never anticipated, but they never forgot their friends and family who were fighting and possibly even dying on the frozen slopes of the White Spike Mountains.

Shattered Ties picks up the story of that fight and follows the desperate efforts of Javin, On'li, Va'ma and the rest as they try to survive against overwhelming odds. The Guadel who were so opposed to Va'del joining their ranks are about to find out that he's the only person with any chance of saving them from the enemy that they created.

Publisher's Note: Readers new to The Guadel Chronicles should begin with Frozen Prospects (currently free).

About the Author

Dean Murray has released 18 titles in the last two years across multiple pen names and has more than 250,000 copies of his work currently in circulation. Dean started reading seriously in the second grade due to a competition and has spent most of the subsequent three decades lost in other people's worlds. After reading several local libraries more or less dry of sci-fi and fantasy, he started spending more time wandering around worlds of his own creation to avoid the boredom of the 'real' world. These days Dean has a wonderful wife and two lovely daughters to keep him rather more grounded, but the idea of bringing others along with him as he meets interesting new people in universes nobody else has ever seen tends to drag him back to his computer on a fairly regular basis. Dean Murray is a prolific author with dozens of titles across multiple pen names and more than half a million copies of his work currently in circulation.

Dean started reading seriously in the second grade due to a competition and has spent most of the subsequent three decades lost in other people's worlds.

Things worsened, or improved depending on your point of view, when he first started experimenting with writing while finishing up his accounting degree. These days Dean has a lovely wife and three wonderful children to keep him more grounded than he used to be, but the idea of bringing others along with him as he meets interesting new people in universes nobody else has ever seen drags him back to his computer on a regular basis.

Thank heavens it doesn't end on a cliffhanger?! I love how the beginning offers a full summary from the previous books. This method is perfect for series with a long wait in between stories. Kudos for this consideration. It reminded of what all has been done and I did enjoy that. I do like the author's note regarding another book possibility either a before Exodus or two decades after Va'del & Jain's story with mention of a cameo. So much attention to detail but the action scenes were off the charts that I found myself reading them slowly to fully absorb the mental visual Dean Murray was describing. So many characters to cheer, boo, fall in love and feel for. Love the highs (father & son reunited) and lows; tolerated Counselor Guadel On'li - her mental thoughts were starting to get on my nerves. So glad Healer Sara was able to explain things to On'li, it allowed but us readers to know what future plans would be in the works. And I love that Jain got to finally marry Va'del. Pa'chi got to reunite with her best friend Va'del. These moments are my most favorite scenes in the book.

I highly recommend this 4-book series to any sci-fi action book junkie. This book setting reminds me of Dean's "Reborn" trilogy. Now that series is another wild ride.

I really enjoyed reading this book. The storyline was great. Character development was great. I loved the whole series. There were some typos, misspellings here and there but not enough to ruin the story for me. The writing was very good. For example, during battle scenes I felt as I were actually there fighting along with the characters ... even though I don't know how to fight. ☺

This is my first time reading a Dean Murray book(s). I felt the first three books (excluding I'rone) were all 4-4.5 star books and were quite enjoyable. This final book was a solid 5 star effort. Usually these types of books finds the hero super powerful at the end and you are left believing that they will then just go on to resume their normal life with their trophy wife and all will be fine until their dying days. This book you really are left feeling unsure of what kind of life the hero will lead due to the irreparable damage that was done to him through the course of the war. It felt like this is what war would do to a person in the real world, similar to how Frodo was affected in LoTR. You are left feeling sorry for the price one man will pay for the rest of his life so that the rest of the world can carry on. The end of the book really made me aware of that point, since it was not what I expected, and that end really made this series one of my favorites. I loved the sword and sorcery, the coming of age romance, and the characters in this series. Dean Murray, Thank You for a great time and for having a properly edited book, seems like such a little thing but makes a world of difference.

...and then? It grew old. I read and purchased, and read and purchased, and read... but at the end of it all, I was left wanting. I will not be reading the short story advertised as book 5 of the Chronicles. I have spent too much time and too much money. I admit, I have been strung along, and it's been my own fault. I thought - rather hoped - that the story would finally end up somewhere. 4 books, 4 books. It had a beginning, a middle that went on and on and on...and on... and a denouement never came. Instead, it all just ended. Fair enough - then so ends my reading any more of Mr. Murray's books...pen names included.

This whole series is amazing! I always enjoy this author! I felt all of the previous book to this one were great... I just felt like the end fell a little short for me. I have read four books to get to an ending that was OK at best , it turned out like I wanted it to but I feel like the end was more of an opening for another book and it was written a little unclear, I feel like the author could have been more descriptive on the ending. Other than that I loved the series !

This series was so good. I would love to be able to read more about Va'del, Jain, and Abbey as there seems to be more adventures for them. That being said, the series does come to a natural conclusion that does not leave you hanging.
